“Cathey Millers latest paintings depict portraits of women clad in tactical gear, gas masks, ski masks, and American flags inhabiting bunkers and rooms full of video screens. Miller uses bold colors and a painterly style to present a doomsday scenario that is tempered by the occasional orange bicycle, a sweetly smiling face, or a fluorescent jellyfish. Her inspirations for this new work are the constant stream of violent images on modern computer, television, movie, and gaming screens, and “Are You Ready? A Guide to Citizen Preparedness” issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Miller is a 1985 graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena , CA.”

So yeah. I took a job as a “cart-girl” (Travis won!). There’s a perfectly gorgeous hoity-toity country club practically spittin’ distance from my own backyard. They have, however, politely asked me not to spit. Anyhoo, I ran across an ad on CraigsList for the job and thought what the hell? It’s like being a flight attendant again, only this time I’m on the ground in shorts and tennis shoes and I’m not there primarily for your safety.

I’m not even sure what my real pay is yet. But I made 50-bucks in tips on Tuesday sitting out on a beautiful golf course, watching deer wander by and occasionally making a scotch and soda for a retired gazillionaire. Not too shabby kids.

The only complaint I have thus far, well, besides the intense heat, would be the other “cart girls.” I’m like twice as old and 10 times not as young thin and hot as the other “girls.” That’s cool, I had my day, but my GAWD the drama! I’ve got an 18-year old under my roof, so I’m used to drama, but these girls are just plain crazy.

Within my very first hour of “training,” the cart-girl in charge of “training” me that day had already divulged that she’s pretty convinced she’s a lesbian, which is mighty fine by me as I actually prefer the company of gay folks, but I’m not sure why I’m the only person in the world she’s decided to tell thus far. ‘Specially since she decided to share this news in the first 7-minutes of knowing me. She also told me, in great exhausting detail, about the past 2 weeks of “partying” she’d done, and went into story after story about her friends…people I’ve yet to meet, and chances are, never will…oy. Fortunately the management felt I had a good enough grasp of the non-rocket-science position and sent me on my merry way alone after that first day. I thought I might pick up (see: steal) some wifi from the local mansions, but no such luck. Perhaps it’s time I learned to *shudder* read a book or somethin’.

I’ve decided to start making some mixed-CD’s to take with me so’s I can introduce our amazing DdFW artists to the high-fallutin’ country club set. Why not? Maybe I’ll turn some of those old retired geezers into DdFW music fans. Or maybe they’ll tell me to “turn down that damn racket.” We’ll see.
