INTRODUCING
our first ever
DIORAMA-O-RAMA
Silent art auction and fundraiser for Justin Sullivan
Saturday, June 14 | 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. | Shannon’s House
(ask around cuz if you can easily find out where it is, you’re invited)
R.S.V.P. YOUR PARTICIPATION | DEADLINE: JUNE 6, 2008
dioramadallas@gmail.com
(pretty please r.s.v.p on time. mwah…)
Diorama-O-Rama is a collective art happening and fundraiser. Everyone is invited and encouraged to make and donate a diorama to our silent auction with 100 percent of the proceeds going to our Dallas friend Justin Sullivan who, for many months, has been displaced from working and living in his Oak Cliff home and is instead living in Bethesda, Maryland, where he is undergoing cutting-edge treatments to kick some cancer butt! Read Justin’s very personal experiences with cancer.
What is a diorama?
It’s a world in a box that’s made however you like. There are no size restrictions, no theme restrictions, and no real rules at all. All dioramas will be displayed outside, so come prepared if your diorama requires special supplies (battery packs, extension cords, etc) for display.
PRIZE CATEGORIES
Diorama prize categories could include, but are not limited to: most rad, low rent, olfactory, fluorescent, kinetic, fancy pants, likely to succeed, green (your interpretation), edible, popular, derivative, French, peaceful, anarchic, illuminated, unicorn-esque, nautical, OG, OMFG, doughnut shop-ish, glam rock, and so on. Whatever. It don’t matter. Lets just have fun while creating some good karma and raising lots of money for our sick friend with mounting medical bills.
EVENT DETAILS
This event is open to anyone who wishes to make a diorama or just kick back with our keg of beer, music, bug spray, sunscreen, and nice people. Potluck BBQ contributions are appreciated. Kiddos are absolutely welcome! There will be DJs and bands—names to be announced! If you have any questions email the Diorama-O-Rama contacts.

“Cathey Millers latest paintings depict portraits of women clad in tactical gear, gas masks, ski masks, and American flags inhabiting bunkers and rooms full of video screens. Miller uses bold colors and a painterly style to present a doomsday scenario that is tempered by the occasional orange bicycle, a sweetly smiling face, or a fluorescent jellyfish. Her inspirations for this new work are the constant stream of violent images on modern computer, television, movie, and gaming screens, and “Are You Ready? A Guide to Citizen Preparedness” issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Miller is a 1985 graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena , CA.”

Taken from April & Brad’s post on their myspace page - “The Red Blood Club will be closing its doors for good on June 15, 2008. This completely breaks our hearts, but we have been trying to fight a battle that we cannot seem to win…At several of those shows there were maybe 10 people that showed up… We were not trying to make a buck off anyone…we were simply trying to keep the doors open.
We would like to thank EVERYONE that came out to RBC and showed their support. We would not have made it this long without you!…
I would like to ask that you all keep us in your memories. There were SO MANY kick ass shows at RBC and even more good times. We made a lot of new friends and even a few enemies! It will all be missed greatly.
Please be sure to continue to show your support to Doublewide, Bar of Soap, Reno’s and The Granada. They really need you and when they are gone there will be nothing!
We will be planning a “Grand Finale” party that will take place at RBC. The details will be posted soon.
We love you all!!
x0×0x0×0~ April & Brad”
If I hadn’t lost my cell phone the other day (not gettin’ the text invite ’til ’twas too late), then I woulda been at the birthday paaartaaay for my darling Reid Robinson and the divine EZ Eddie D. Below is audio from one helluva great day with ‘em both…
Pikahsso Allen Poe calls legendary DJ EZ Eddie D “the Godfather of DFW underground hip-hop.” You should always listen to Pikahsso, he know of what he speaketh…
DJ EZ Eddie D has cultivated a career as a DJ, remixer and producer for more than 24 years. Being the closest thing to a hip-hop historian that Dallas has ever known, he has worked with the early pioneers as well as many of the current up-and-comers. From his early days growing up in Finneytown (a suburb in Cincinnati) to his 23 years in Dallas, it’s no surprise to find his influences are all over the musical map. With a collection containing everthing from R&B to classic rock, funk to retro and blues to hip-hop, his studio is the Mecca record collectors dream of.”
“His main focus today is fusing all of these genres with hip-hop beats creating a distinctive sound all his own. In 1982, Dallas DJ The Master Mixer taught Eddie how to blend records, and also introduced him to the radio station KNON 89.3 “The Voice of the People.” He interned and moved his way up the ranks, working with DJ Cisco Soul & the Party Patrol and Nippy Jones of the “Fresh & Freaky Friday Show” (later KKDA). Nippy helped groom him for his own time slot. In 1987, station manager Craig Taylor gave him that chance with his first show airing Thursday nights from 9 to 11. The show moved a few times before finally landing on Saturdays from 5 to 7 p.m., where you can still tune in weekly for “Knowledge Dropped-Lessons Taught (Vol.2).” It is the only source Dallas has for true underground hip-hop, and a public radio station is a perfect forum for his philosophies on politics, religion, racism and social responsibility.
Reid Robinson and I met up at Gachet Coffee recently to go Inside the Mind of EZ Eddie D and had ourselves a delightful time. Did we catch the whole thing on audio? But of course, darlings.
Our good man Alex Kanakis hung out with Eddie at the KNON 89.3 studio and caught some super-sweet video.

Guest speaker begins at 9 p.m. at Space - Live Webcast Here on The Fine Line. “The power of serving others in your community through the arts.”
Part of the First Tuesday Speaker Series, Deep Ellum invites locals making a difference in the neighborhood to come and talk to us about experiences, history and current projects. Past guests have included Jeff Liles, Alex Bevil from Town2 Project with Brian Gibb from The Public Trust, The Dallas Police Department, Katherine Seale of Preservation Dallas, and Barry Annino with representatives of Deep Ellum Foundation.
This time we will have Hal Samples of Hal Samples Gallery and Space Studios. This should be a great night of not only art appreciation but also civic and community issues.

At 6:30 we’ll gather for a yoga session (a donation to the instructor is requested and just so you know… I hear it’s beginner friendly which is great because the last time I tried to touch my toes was high-school gym class and yes I’ll be there)

So the girl-child has a birthday coming up next month and all she’s talked about for like the last 5 years is how much she wants a Pug.
Since she’s moving into her first apartment this weekend, which has me feeling a little nervous and weepy, I gave in to her incessant pleas and her wish has been granted.
We are still working on a firm name. He’s this teeny-tiny puppy with a gargantuan belly. Therefore, I immediately dubbed him “Mister McFatty.” The girl-child was leaning towards Milton, which complements my name, “Mister Milton McFatty.”
It’s been “Gus-Gus” the past 10 hours or so, named after that lovable big-bellied mouse in Cinderella. It seems to be sticking….oh…and it’s been a real joy picking up about 2-tons of puppy-poo, found in every nook and cranny of this Austin hotel room…sigh…how the hell does this little guy generate so much poop? No wonder that belly is so bloated.
I’m off down I-35 this weekend to haul the girl-child back to Austin and get her settled into her new digs. So no shows fer me, but plenty for you...

Tim Miller - “Adelaide”
I can’t recall precisely how I first met Tim Miller, but I do know ’twas awhile back. Cuz one time I was doing a live audio stream at the Green Room for Kirtland Records, and like I ran into Tim there and I particularly remember that night cuz Cary Pierce was performing and he asked me to watch the door for him while he changed…heh.
Anyhoo, Tim’s got a spankin’ new album just out, Adelaide, and he’s gonna drop it like it’s hot this coming Saturday, May 31st at The Loft.
Joining Tim on stage that night, the amazing Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights and Electric Touch. Es muy bueno, like buttah.
Recorded onto tape, Tim Miller’s Adelaide is an example of emotionally- charged, mature songwriting. Produced by Chris Bell (Erykah Badu, Polyphonic Spree, Eagles) and mastered by Adam Ayan (Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Phish, Ani DiFranco), Adelaide features Tim Miller’s honest and soothing voice performing melodic folk rock songs in a style similar to singer/songwriters, James Blunt and Ari Hest. Out Of The Box (2004) established this Dallas based singer/songwriter as an artist with a raw, honest approach and since Miller’s music has been licensed by MTV’s My Super Sweet 16, Real World, Road Rules, and The Challenge, and Tom Green’s film Shred II.
Adelaide is a collection of meaningful, slow-medium folk rock songs. While listening to this album, you get the feeling that any of these songs could easily be in a soundtrack during the turning point of a film. Miller’s guitars and vocals blend together effortlessly while the organ and piano perfectly compliment the basic folk rock sound of the album. Instead of keeping with the usual acoustic guitar and piano set-up that most folk rock musicians use, Miller brings in an organ on some songs, which makes the album stand out and creates an overall fuller sound. “Say Hello” is one of the album’s faster-paced rock songs that showcase this full organ sound, in addition to a melodic bridge and break down of electric guitar and voice. “Let’s Go” and “Another Day in the Life” are two additional solid, medium-tempo rock songs that move the album along nicely with catchy rock guitars and strong vocals. The rest of the album is slower-paced, folk rock ballads, including “Whom Am I,” an emotional song with dreamy acoustic guitars, dramatic piano and introspective lyrics. “Man Overboard,” another slower-paced rock folk song, features one of the album’s most catchy guitar riffs. In “Let us End,” Miller sings colorful harmonies, creating a soulful feel that reveals the depth of his vocal abilities. “Four Leaf Clover” brings in the mandolin and steel guitar to give the listener a taste of country. “This Life” features both a catchy piano and keyboard that give the song an ambiance of driving through the country at sunset.
Adelaide is an album of listenable instrumentation and dynamic songwriting. Tim Miller is definitely here to stay and I wouldn’t be surprised if very soon we start hearing his songs in more mainstream outlets.

The artwork and music are not of this world… or are they? Is the surreal nature of dreams and fantasy from another plane of existence, or are they here in plain sight? The artists and musicians participating in Existence Is Elsewhere all explore what may or may not be imagined.
Existance Is Elsewhere is a one night only event featuring raw local talent of artists Nick Bradford, Lets Kish, Jason Barnett, Kunst, Alison Welsh, Larry Carey, Janelle Tohill and Loren V. Era. Music by Yells At Ells and SUBkommander.

I’m going to defer to my dear friend over at the Sub-Rosa for all your art-going needs. The chick knows her sh*t. Use her site often.
I was most pleased to plop my arse on the sofa, after the Re*Cov*Er shindig on Saturday night, only to find precious Taylor Davis just a’croonin’ away on the Gordon Keith Show.
I Love Math’s highly anticipated album, Getting to the Point is Beside It, sits all hot’n'bothered’n'ready for your insatiable CD player. Tonight, please join me in celebration by settin’ up over at Barley House for a good ol’ fashioned listenin’-to partay.
Out of town? Too lazy to make the drive? That’s kinda okay cuz we’ll be streaming the whole shindig live here at The Fine Line. Expect the cameras to roll ’bout 7 pm. The chat room will be up and running too, in case youse got questions for the band or somethin’.
Getting To The Point Is Beside It
We all get tired and we all get weary. Sometimes what we need is something true-a good, honest document stripped of all falsehoods and petty trickery. I Love Math’s new album, Getting to the Point Is Beside It is one such thing.
“It’s amazing what kind of magic some people can make with only the most basic of ingredients,” says Mundane Sounds about front-man/guitarist John Dufilho’s songwriting.
Dufilho (also the front-man for the Deathray Davies and drummer of Apples in Stereo), says “Mostly, I wanted to write and record a very straightforward album. I wanted it simple, to the point, and didn’t want to hide behind effects pedals, distortion, studio tricks, or irony.”
Drummer Philip Peeples agrees, saying, “On this record, I really enjoyed keeping it simple, playing into the songs, not simply through them. Also, John and Jason are amazing drummers, something that’s never far from my mind.” Accordingly, the band’s unwritten rule of “keep it sparse” makes perfect sense alongside another I Love Math mantra: “no cymbals allowed.” Simplicity over all.
On the 12 song Getting to the Point, pedal steel soars out over guitars you’d expect from the best of old school country. But this is no retro trip; songs like “Josephine Street,” “Some Bridges,” and “Too Many Demons” wouldn’t be out of place on a mix-tape with contemporaries like Jon Brion, Belle & Sebastian, Jonathan Richman, and Yo La Tengo (Fakebook-era) as it would with vintage Kinks, and like-minded harmonizers Simon and Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers.
As The Deathray Davies continues to move forward, I Love Math comes on as its own animal. This is no side-project; Dufilho writes endlessly, so pulling off two full-time bands is almost second nature. Recorded with Salim Nourallah at Pleasantry Lane Studio,.Dufilho and his Dallas-based band-mates, bassist Jason Garner (The Deathray Davies, The Paper Chase), drummer Philip Peeples (Old 97’s), and keyboardist Andy Lester (The Deathray Davies, Slider Pines), have given us an organic yet cinematic piece of music. Songs like “These Paper Walls,” “Volcanic Ash,” and “Better Days” come off like a soundtrack to a great movie that was never made.
On Getting to the Point, I Love Math deliver something modern yet classic. Welcome this record into your life. Your soundtrack has never been better.
