My only excuse is that I’ve been swamped with work, kiddies and life in general. That’s my excuse for falling behind on Paul Slavens’ SUPERB Podcast, Track by Track.
I’ve got to catch up with the newer ones with Mara Lee Miller, Matthew & the Arrogant Sea and Robert Gomez. The man knows how to pick his guests.
Check it out. NOW!

Just an inkling of one reason as to why I adore Jeff Liles with all my heart, soul, fingers’n'toes, is that we are about the same age, went to the same high schools and sort of lived through the same things, only to actually meet each other decades later.
So I’m quite pleased with this weeks Echoes and Reverberations, Our Radio Heads are Waxing Nostalgic.
,,,In 1974, Dallas rock radio was a truly subversive phenomenon. Program directors and DJs had the guts to try some new shit. It wasn’t uncommon to hear songs that you were long to lose your virginity to: “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin, “Stranglehold” by Ted Nugent, and Peter Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like We Do?” were all like sex on the radio. Fringe artists like Funkadelic, Frank Zappa and Little Feat were getting regular spins at night. An experimental instrumental record like the Edgar Winter Group’s “Frankenstein” even registered as a hit single. Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon was on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart for over five years straight.
For a twerp kid in Richardson, The Zoo was the analog portal into a bizarre subversive counterculture. A mysterious black vacuum where men wore earrings, women smoked pot and all of the lyrics were profoundly poetic. (What was a stairway to heaven, anyway? And just how much did it cost? Have you seen the wheel in the sky? I hear it keeps on turnin’.)…Please Read it All.

I’m particularly fond of the ZOO logo. I had this sticker on my first car…a 1950-something, bright yellow Ford pick-up truck. One day, upon returning from Stewart’s Creek at Lake Lewisville, the sun setting behind the truck casting a shadow of the sticker on to the dashboard…we, in the truck, had a few beers under out belts and quite happily coined the phrase “Excellente’ Elephante’”….heh…later, upon arriving home, still a’buzzed, we all ate dog food by accident…aaaaaaah memories…

Just as soon as TFG finishes up loading the divine new graphics, my music/art/culture blather will be housed back here. My LOtB blog will chronicle my personal adventures living life in Deep Ellum.
I’ve debated and debated over what my first post back here would contain. Paul Slavens and Doug Burr made it an easy decision. Two of my favorite people. Two of my favorite musicians. Two beautiful souls.
I give you the first Podcast of (hopefully) many many to come, Paul Slavens “Track by Track.” The Podcast will be featured over at the splendid Art & Seek, a place I spend much of my time perusing.
Art&Seek is launching a new podcast! ‘Track By Track” will appear every other week on Art&Seek and features KERA 90.1 at Night host Paul Slavens talking with musical artists about the creation process of their latest releases. Listeners will then hear excerpts from those releases.
The inaugural podcast features singer/songwriter Doug Burr, whose latest album is The Shawl.
It’s a FANTASTIC Podcast. Doug and Paul go “track by track” discussing the stories behind each beautiful song on Doug’s latest release, The Shawl. It’s utterly mesmerizing…both the Podcast and the album.
This ain’t gonna be like the old FineLineLive, nor my old TexasGigs doin’s. Rather, lots more video and fly-by-the-seat-of-my-granny-panties type stuff with loads of contributing guests.
Now off you go to listen to the first installment of “Track by Track,” with the fabulous Doug Burr.

I still ain’t decided just what I plan to do wit’dis site…if anything. But what I’d like to do is more stuff like below…I need one Tiffany Kieran one Jeffrey Liles to make my dreams come true…more on that later…
DJ Nature hips us to the fact that DJ EZ Eddie D hits his 25th year mark on the air this year…so I went up to the attic and dusted off this amazing experience from a couple years back…audio interview with Eddie D circa January 10, 2007…

Pikahsso Allen Poe calls legendary DJ EZ Eddie D “the Godfather of DFW underground hip-hop.” You should always listen to Pikahsso, he know of what he speaketh…
DJ EZ Eddie D has cultivated a career as a DJ, remixer and producer for more than 24 years. Being the closest thing to a hip-hop historian that Dallas has ever known, he has worked with the early pioneers as well as many of the current up-and-comers. From his early days growing up in Finneytown (a suburb in Cincinnati) to his 23 years in Dallas, it’s no surprise to find his influences are all over the musical map. With a collection containing everthing from R&B to classic rock, funk to retro and blues to hip-hop, his studio is the Mecca record collectors dream of.”
“His main focus today is fusing all of these genres with hip-hop beats creating a distinctive sound all his own. In 1982, Dallas DJ The Master Mixer taught Eddie how to blend records, and also introduced him to the radio station KNON 89.3 “The Voice of the People.” He interned and moved his way up the ranks, working with DJ Cisco Soul & the Party Patrol and Nippy Jones of the “Fresh & Freaky Friday Show” (later KKDA). Nippy helped groom him for his own time slot. In 1987, station manager Craig Taylor gave him that chance with his first show airing Thursday nights from 9 to 11. The show moved a few times before finally landing on Saturdays from 5 to 7 p.m., where you can still tune in weekly for “Knowledge Dropped-Lessons Taught (Vol.2).” It is the only source Dallas has for true underground hip-hop, and a public radio station is a perfect forum for his philosophies on politics, religion, racism and social responsibility.
Reid Robinson and I met up at Gachet Coffee recently to go Inside the Mind of EZ Eddie D and had ourselves a delightful time. Did we catch the whole thing on audio? But of course, darlings.
Be sure and tune in to 89.3 KNON every Saturday night for DJ Eddie D’s Knowledge Dropped Lessons Taught – 5-7 p.m.
The interview includes tracks from P.P.T. and Pikahsso.

san jose hotel. may 2008. austin, texas. ©allison v. smith
I’ve been totally mesmerized with the Hotel San Jose in Austin for a really long time. It all started a few years back when I shot video at the SXSJ during SXSW. The shindig takes place every year in the lot behind Jo’s Coffee on Congress, which is also the lot for Hotel San Jose. I went into the hotel several times to purchase wine, and found myself more and more intrigued, relaxed and wanting to just rent a room and never leave. Problem is, the damn place is always booked. I’ve tried numerous times when going to visit the girl-child. I can’t afford the joint, but I’ve got a secret stash that I keep tucked-away in hopes that one day, I’ll get at least one glorious night there…and now this…
One of my favorite assignments this year was shooting details of the San Jose Hotel in Austin for their website and hotel postcards . The site is finally up and it’s pretty rad! They made my photos into 8mm film footage. There’s a prize for whoever finds Bucks on the site. Check it out the cool new site designed by the talented boys at Coloring Book Studio here.
Now at least I can hang out on the site and stare longingly and adoringly at Allison’s photos…sort of pretend to be there…like I pretend to be 29…heh…cough…
PS – Check out those folks at Coloring Book Studio. They are doing some pretty durn exciting things.

Vlog, Vlog, Vlog, Vlog, I Vlog Around…
Yup, there’s a lotta live and recorded Vloggin’ goin’ down starting this month, yours truly behind the camera on a couple or more.
1. Friday Night Happy Hour at The Double-Wide “Make Mine a Double” – no, not really, we don’t have an official name yet. But here’s the deal, Ex-Radio Diva and Booking Agent/Local Music Advocate Chelsea Callahan shall host this fabulous affair during the late Happy Hours (7 PM – ?) with all sorts of crazed, quirky, interesting, entertaining content and guests. It’ll be live – you are invited to come on over to the Double-Wide and join in the fun…you can say hey to your mom in East Texas or somethin’.
First Live Webcast/Vlog (it’ll be recorded and posted too) begins Friday, July 18th – 7 pm.
2. This is super-secret, so don’t tell anyone just yet, but Ex-and current Dallas Observer contributor Rich Lopez is hosting a swank new show, “Hint of Mint” all over Oak Lawn, Cedar Springs and beyond. As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, I’ll be the straight broad behind the camera. The show(s) will focus on the Gay/Lesbian Community with lots of emphasis on art/culture/nightlife and so on and so on. It’s gon’ be so fun. Website and schedule forthcoming.
3. As mentioned earlier, The Fine Line is bringing back the “Inside the Mind” series, only now, it’ll be on Video – sometimes live, sometimes not. I gotta rustle me up some Reid post haste. Lots more on that later.
4. Me thinks me has a deal going with a local media outlet doing a series called “The Confessional.” (if not there, then here) Let’s just say that we lock persons in the local rock-star/artist/photographer/blogger/whatnot world in a room with a timer and a video camera. It’s during this 10-minutes that they can pretty much do pretty much any damn thing they want (sing, talk shop, sleep, eat lunch, do shooters, whatever). I’ve got one under my belt, just waiting for a boss to return to work. More on that later too.
5. Just in from camp Smile Smile…
Just wanted to let you know that we (Smile Smile) are starting a Brand New Video Blog. Our first post will go up on Thursday (we are yet to agree on a name for the blog, big surprise, haha).
Our thinking is, when you play in a band with your ex (which if for some unknown reason you didn’t know, we do), you fight and argue all the time and it’s continuously awkward (strangely enough, I don’t think it would work any other way), so why not share all of those FUN things with the rest of the world. YAY!
Though this is a work in progress, the plan is to record new video every Wednesday night at our rehearsal space/studio. I’m sure everyone will get to witness the fights and insults during rehearsal, as well some “acoustic” performances (since we will be there with our instruments anyway). The two of us will definitely be sitting down for a few minutes every Wed. to look into the camera and let people know what’s going on in the world of Smile Smile. . . . . . . which will probably result in arguments and fighting.
Fasten your seat belt, this could be a disaster.
The Male 1/2 of Smile Smile,
Ryan

I’m so loving this one. I’m still feeling the awkwardness I felt at the Quick Music Awards when Ryan broke the broken-up news to me…I’m still a little weepy about it too.

I know this is really old news, but what the hell, Josh is (sorta) back, and I’m rather psyched…
The Adventure Club on 102.1 The Edge
thislast Sunday night. The show will be broadcast weekly on The Edge from 8p-11p.You know the history and the circumstances leading to the return so there’s no point in telling you again. Still three hours, still Josh, still KDGE, still all the music you don’t normally hear on the radio.
Zac‘n’Josh are longtime pals. So of course there was a bunch of IM’ing going down…click fool.

Tim Miller – “Adelaide”
I can’t recall precisely how I first met Tim Miller, but I do know ’twas awhile back. Cuz one time I was doing a live audio stream at the Green Room for Kirtland Records, and like I ran into Tim there and I particularly remember that night cuz Cary Pierce was performing and he asked me to watch the door for him while he changed…heh.
Anyhoo, Tim’s got a spankin’ new album just out, Adelaide, and he’s gonna drop it like it’s hot this coming Saturday, May 31st at The Loft.
Joining Tim on stage that night, the amazing Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights and Electric Touch. Es muy bueno, like buttah.
Recorded onto tape, Tim Miller’s Adelaide is an example of emotionally- charged, mature songwriting. Produced by Chris Bell (Erykah Badu, Polyphonic Spree, Eagles) and mastered by Adam Ayan (Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Phish, Ani DiFranco), Adelaide features Tim Miller’s honest and soothing voice performing melodic folk rock songs in a style similar to singer/songwriters, James Blunt and Ari Hest. Out Of The Box (2004) established this Dallas based singer/songwriter as an artist with a raw, honest approach and since Miller’s music has been licensed by MTV’s My Super Sweet 16, Real World, Road Rules, and The Challenge, and Tom Green’s film Shred II.
Adelaide is a collection of meaningful, slow-medium folk rock songs. While listening to this album, you get the feeling that any of these songs could easily be in a soundtrack during the turning point of a film. Miller’s guitars and vocals blend together effortlessly while the organ and piano perfectly compliment the basic folk rock sound of the album. Instead of keeping with the usual acoustic guitar and piano set-up that most folk rock musicians use, Miller brings in an organ on some songs, which makes the album stand out and creates an overall fuller sound. “Say Hello” is one of the album’s faster-paced rock songs that showcase this full organ sound, in addition to a melodic bridge and break down of electric guitar and voice. “Let’s Go” and “Another Day in the Life” are two additional solid, medium-tempo rock songs that move the album along nicely with catchy rock guitars and strong vocals. The rest of the album is slower-paced, folk rock ballads, including “Whom Am I,” an emotional song with dreamy acoustic guitars, dramatic piano and introspective lyrics. “Man Overboard,” another slower-paced rock folk song, features one of the album’s most catchy guitar riffs. In “Let us End,” Miller sings colorful harmonies, creating a soulful feel that reveals the depth of his vocal abilities. “Four Leaf Clover” brings in the mandolin and steel guitar to give the listener a taste of country. “This Life” features both a catchy piano and keyboard that give the song an ambiance of driving through the country at sunset.
Adelaide is an album of listenable instrumentation and dynamic songwriting. Tim Miller is definitely here to stay and I wouldn’t be surprised if very soon we start hearing his songs in more mainstream outlets.

Rich just announced that Justin Foster just announced that he’s joining the Pugs & Kelly Show. Pretty nifty. He’s been sort of regularly on the show as of late, plus with both Pugs and Kelly gettin’ hitched, they just might need an extra voice.
When they gonna scoop up Dave Little already?

Since the boy-child picked up a guitar about 5 years ago, I’ve spent many a night in all-ages clubs. Many, many, many a night. Most notably, The Door. The boys managed to land quite a few gigs at the Door, which meant that I, as their roadie, would soon call it home.
The only time I’ve been in the Door’s new location (the former Gypsy Tea Room), since the change, was for Art Conspiracy. Tonight might be my second.
I have to admit, that if someone walked up to me right now and said Asleep at the Wheel and Deadman are performing tonight in Dallas, I would have replied, “oh really? Where? Sons? Poor David’s? The Granada?” Nope, the Door. Which, by the way, is a perfect spot for this crazy-ass-Grammy-winning-Texas-Swing band to perform, cuz there’s plenty of boot-scootin’ room.
Over the course of the last 37 years, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel have boldly defied the fickle lures of the mainstream — and thrived — by sticking to their noble cause of keeping that distinctly American of art forms, western swing, alive and kicking. Along the way, they’ve been awarded nine Grammys, entertained millions and won praise and admiration from the likes of Willie Nelson to Bob Dylan, George Strait to Van Morrison. Asleep at the Wheel has been called the “post-modern kings of western swing,” and given their storied history, it is a title that few would question.
Asleep at the Wheel is an American musical institution: a kinship of like-minded musicians (over 80 members to date) united under Benson’s crusade to carry the torch of big band western swing music into the 21st century. Case and point is the latest lineup, which is not only spectacularly talented but also noticeably youthful. As Ray reflects, “It is amazing to me at this point in 2006 compared to 1970 when I started the band. My whole intent was to bring the music back to my generation. We’ve done what we set out to do and it’s just grown. Now, we have a whole new generation doing it, and we have a whole new band.”
The result is the brand new CD Reinventing the Wheel, the first feature release from the band in seven years and a fitting title for the band’s return to its roots, albeit with some fresh faces. As newest member and vocalist Elizabeth McQueen suggests, “…it’s come full circle and it’s back to that original review concept of Asleep at the Wheel, with lots of different styles of music and different singers trading off, which makes it really great.” –John Wooley
Another FineLineFave, Heather Knox, was supposed to perform tonight too, but a MySpace bulletin is circulating that she’s had to cancel. Sucks for me. However, what we still have here kiddies, is a top-notch show…

Just across the hall, over at the Prophet Bar, they are hosting a Benefit Concert honoring the late Larry Norman, who recently passed away due to a heart related problems…
One of the pioneers of Contemporary Christian music, Larry Norman has remained a stubbornly independent artist for more than three decades. Best known for such gospel-infused rock tunes as “I Wish We’d All Been Ready” and “Why Don’t You Look Into Jesus,” he has recorded an impressive body of work that combines witty topical statements of faith with an expert sense of pop/rock songwriting. Beyond his own performing career, Norman has sponsored other talented Christian artists as a label owner and record producer. Despite battling serious health problems in recent years, he has continued to release CDs through his record company, Solid Rock.

Yeah, so my Kidd Kraddick in the Morning listenin’ ways cat was let outta the bag long ago. Sometimes, though, every once in awhile, it pays off for one of our own strugglin’ artists. This morning Kidd Kraddick raved about a musician who shoulda been way famous long ago….sweet, precious Taylor Davis.
“New York City” by Taylor Davis
Kidd claims to have “wandered into some coffee shop in a really bad part of town…and this kid was performing…” Heh. I’m assuming he meant Opening Bell in that really bad part of town directly across the street from the Dallas Police Department.
Let’s hope the mention gets Taylor some much deserved attention outside those oh-so-dangerous coffee houses. Meantime, you can check out more songs and more Taylor here, including upcoming tour dates.

‘Twas at AllGood Cafe that I fussed at Noah Bailey about just when his band, the Naptime Shake, would perform again. My answer is before me. Saturday, February 16th, the Naptime Shake, along with the great Jon Dee Graham shall take the stage at AllGood Cafe. 8 PM sharp. Don’t be late.
Jon Dee Graham has been an integral part of the Austin music scene since playing with and the legendary True Believers with Alejandro Escovedo. Since then hes played guitar with Ryan Hedgecock of Lone Justice, Michelle Shocked, John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Kelly Willis, and Calvin Russell. In 1996 he recorded Escape From Monster Island, followed by Summerland, Hooray For The Moon and The Great Battle in 2004. He is also a member of the Resentments with Jud Newcomb, Stephen Bruton, Bruce Hughes, and John Chipman. In 2000 Jon Dee was named singer/songwriter of the year at The Austin Music Awards at SXSW. After returning from a tour in Europe in November, Jon Dee just left the studio with John Cale playing guitar for Alejandro Escovedos upcoming record. Jon Dee is set to record a new record in early 2006. Jon Dee has recently had music featured in Ladder 49 and Veronica Mars.

Drawing their influences from such greatness as Wilco, Sufjan Stevens, Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan and…of course…The Theater Fire, the Naptime Shake lights up the stage with divine rootsy, folksy, rich and creamy greatness.

Pan American ArtProjects
William Cannings Exhibition InfL8
Pan American Art Projects is pleased to feature British sculptor William Cannings in our Dallas space. On view through March 29th, please join us on Saturday, February 16 for an artist talk at 2 p.m. and the opening reception from 5 – 8 p.m.
William Cannings is lured to the visceral quality of inflated objects: the look, feel and smell. “Inflated objects have become a symbol of our popular culture: cheap, disposable, fun and whimsical, sometimes frivolous and distasteful,” says Cannings. His work researches the effects of compressed air on permanent materials, such as aluminum and steel. As a result, his sculptures appear as if they were sensually carved, exhibiting properties that seemingly contradict the physical properties of materials used for composition. In his second exhibition at Pan American Art Projects Dallas, Cannings begins to play with words, aphorisms, and symbols in an inflated impermeable form. In addition, Cannings’ fascination with the inflatable progresses as he tackles the human form and the gender roles articulated in blow-up dolls.
Living and working as a professor of sculpture at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, William Cannings, English-born, first studied art at Loughborough College of Art and Design in England, followed by a BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University, and finally a MFA at Syracuse University.

Conduit Gallery
Collecting & Collectivity – Featuring: Julie Ault & Martin Beck / Otabenga Jones & Associates / Danica Phelps / Team SHaG is a collaborative team including New York artists David Humphrey, Elliott Green and Amy Sillman / Daniel Lefcourt / BASEKAMP + David Dempewolf
Collecting and Collectivity is an exhibition about two seemingly opposite ideas. Collecting, the gathering of objects, is usually associated with the marketplace while collectivity, the gathering of people, is often thought of in reaction to the marketplace. Collectivity designates a group of people constructing a set of shared values and acting accordingly. Politically, collecting is associated with capitalism and collectivity with communism.
The curators, through the exhibition, ask; Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, is there a new paradigm for collectivism that can be informed by collecting? How independent is the avant-garde, traditionally thought of as independent from the market? If art can be made by more than one individual, how does that affect the trend of the art star as a lone genius?
This exhibition brings together seven artists and collaborative teams that challenge the separation between collecting and collectivity.

I just tuned over to 105.3 and lo and behold, my ears met with Mike Schoder live on the show. He’s introducing Pugs and Kelly to…well…good music.
Caller: “Man I love the Granada. You never have to worry about walking through puke or nuthin’”
Beautiful….
Listen Live… Mike is playing some local stuff too, (Centro-matic/South San Gabriel (Pugs compared to Snow Patrol, but asked to keep the CD)
On another strange but true radio note, I heard a commercial for the Sara Bareilles in-store at Good Records tonight on…gasp…106.1 KISS-FM. I’m sure it had something to do with her label. I’m sure Good Records will be filled to capacity. I hope these KISS kiddies might thumb through the greatness filling the shelves at Good Records and find that there is, indeed, life outside of Lifehouse, Daughtry and that Fergie song they play a solid 2500 times a day

I tuned into Pugs and Kelly on the drive back out north, and had quite a time listening to Vaden Todd Lewis on the show. He was there to talk Toadies togetherness, but ended up quite entertaining, witty and fun. Thanks for the cheer-up Mr. Lewis.
They are touring. You outta go.
