Jason Janik and Quick and Holiday Homage and Farah and Blythe and..and…

Posted by Cindy on 17th December 2009

I was there one of those Quick nights, to shoot a portion of the Jason Janik studio tour for KERA’s Art&Seek. I was supposed to focus, that night, on Jason…but I’m a big Blythe Beck fan…and as you can tell by the video, I didn’t have my glasses on, so I didn’t know how out of focus my camera was that night…who cares, it was Blythe Beck! Thanks jason, Blythe and Farah Fleurima for letting me hang out!

Quick Note

Posted by Cindy on 17th December 2009

n67753641830_314

Jason Janik, along with the good folks over at Quick, put together ho…ho…holiday photos of local musicians, personalities and a chef, including Gordon Keith, Tim DeLaughter and the fam, Blythe Beck, Smile Smile and Bowling for Soup, set to a Christmas classic movies theme. You can check out the photos by picking up a copy of Quick, which can be found, like, anywhere. Plus, check out the peek-a-boo videos shot during the photo sessions. Pretty nifty stuff.

Boo

Posted by Cindy on 30th October 2009

So here’s what happened…the boychild saved up a good deal of cash cuz he wanted to purchase a Pug. One Saturday, several weeks back, he set off to Rockwall to meet with a potential new pup’s owner/seller. He returned home with…well…supposedly this pooch is half chihuahua and half pekingnese…and he had this circular scab from where he’d scratched himself due to an enormous amount of fleas…sigh. So I called him “Scabby” straight out of the chute, and Scabby has stuck…the fleas, however, are gone.

My sister is a really talented pooch photographer, and she gave me this beauty this morning. I give you…Scabby…oh…and ironically, I’ve recently been referring to Scabby as “Boo” Very fitting…

Kettle-Time

Boo! Kettle Art Gallery presents: Creepshow. It’s a group show featuring unique masks, photos and other paintings pertaining to All Hallows Eve.

This shindig opens tomorrow night and should make for a horror of a time. Get it? Horror…cuz it’s scary.

91

My boss, along with several other artsy types poured over 420 images at Kettle Art Gallery this week, and narrowed them down to 55 lucky artists who will participate in an upcoming show. I hear-tell that there are some familiar faces in the lot, and several new faces as well.

The unveiling party is on Friday, November 6th at, where else, Kettle Art Gallery.

Gotta New Gig

Posted by Cindy on 13th October 2009

home2

Well kiddies, I’ve somehow managed to land a real job with my beloved KERA-Art&Seek. Lemme hip you to a few things. Fer one, they are fantastically dedicated to the arts/music/culture communities over there on Harry Hines Blvd. These here are some very very very good folks. They make it really simple to promote your events, but you gotta do a little bit of work yourselves…oh, wipe that look off’o'yo’ face. Just a teeny bit of work on your part.

I’m going to make this really easy on ya…go here and submit your “organization” (which can be your venue, your group, your church, your association, your store, your whatever). There it shall remain forever, unless you want to make changes and you just gotta let us know by clicking on the “Update Page” link on your profile page.

Next, and this is really the easy part, you go here to submit your events (like your shows or exhibits or concerts or acting gigs or whatever). That’s it. It’s my job to take care of the rest.

It’s all free of charge. And there are perks, too. Lots of those great events get featured on the site, and some of ‘em even get featured on Gini Mascorro’s radio feature on KERA Radio.

Help us. Help you. Come on over and play, we’re having a splendid time!

podcasttile

PS – this round of Track by Track is fantastic. Paul put together a sampler podcast this time and it’s brilliantly fabulous. It includes some Bosque Brown, Danny Balis, Doug Burr, Rhett Miller, Robert Gomez, Telegraph Canyon and Trey Johnson. It’s so freakin’ great, go listen. NOW!

The good folks at Art&Seek are having a sweet li’l contest for all you photographer-types…

Before we get to the this week’s winner, we have a special request to contributors to our Flickr site. With the AT&T Performing Arts Center set to open soon, we’re looking for some great pictures of the Dallas Arts District to use for some projects we’re working on for Art&Seek. So in addition to the Wyly Theatre and Winspear Opera House, we’re looking for photos of the Dallas Museum of Art, the Crow Collection of Asian Art, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Meyerson Symphony Center, Annette Strauss Artist Square and Booker T. Washington. We’ll be compiling these photos in a special section of Art&Seek, and they will also be strongly considered in the weekly Flickr Contest. Speaking of which…Check out more details and see who won this week’s contest!

Da’Weekend

Posted by Cindy on 18th September 2009

I’ve already listed a couple of notable thangs to attend in the posts below. Today, today I’m feeling a tad under the weather. So I’m going to point your adorable eyes towards all the creamy goodness that Art & Seek has to offer….LOTS of stuff goin’ on this weekend.

Looking over the A&S calendar, I took note of a few things that made my weary, feeble, sleep deprived, aging brain perk-up…

Friday, September 28th

Check out the Goldfish Girls at Absinthe. They might be young, but they know how to spin you right ’round, baby, right ’round.

It’ll cost ya nuthin’ to meet and greet with our young, talented up-and-coming interior designers – it’s at that fabby Art Institute.

Some’o'meown picks:

…speaking of Dave Little…Ozona Grill – the comedic stylings of Dave Little and Mike Mayberry. You’ll laugh your ass off. Literally, wear something tight or else your ass will fall off.

AllGood Cafe – Nicholas Altobelli / Becky Middleton / Mike Hameier – 9 PM – $5 – Go early and eat. AllGood food does a body good.
The Double-Wide – RTB2 / Dem / Southernfolkz / Slider Pines – yup, it’s just that good.
Bryan Street Tavern – Trey Johnson and his backing Shibboleth band. ’tis going to be suuuuweeeet.
City Tavern – Homespun Remedies / Johnny Lloyd Rollins / Daniel Folmer – es muy bueno
Opening Bell – Matthew Gray and Spooky Folk – um…YEAH!
Obzeet – Drop Top Rockets – Rockabilly at its finest!
Dan’s Silverleaf – The Derailers
Hailey’s – Pentagrass / The Monahans / My Wooden Leg – This is a show that might drag my tired ass to Denton tonight. You gotcher Bluegrass, you gotcher Roots, you gotcher taste of Americana, you gotcher Monahans in from Austin…this, my dear friends, is a great line-up! – 9 PM – $6-$8 depending on your day of birth.
Lola’s – Horse Opera / The Heelers – more delectable tuneage
White Elephant – Jordan Mycoskie – what can I say? I’m a longtime fan.
Woody’s – Jason Boland / Buddy Huffman – Hello? Buddy Huffman! Macon Greyson! The Fine Line…sheesh…

Don’t ferget Art Star Party and the Dovetail EP Release, too.

Saturday, September 19th

Art & Seek Says…

Dallas Heritage Village Chili Cook-Off – can you ever really go wrong at a chili cook-off? No. No, you cannot.

Party Like a Pirate – Island Party in the West End – Pirates are very hip and trendy this season.

Ray Wylie Hubard / Brandon Rhyder / Walt Wilkins / Radney Foster at the Municipal Auditorium – 4 good reasons to drive to Greenville

Butch Hancock & Camille Cortinas at the Jefferson Freedom Cafe – This. Is. A. Good’un’.

Some’o'meown picks:

AllGood Cafe – …speaking of Dave Little…Dave Little Meltdown – I make absolutely no bones ’bout it. Dave Little is, hands-down, my favorite human on earth. EARTH, I say! Add some other amazing local talent and meltdowns suddenly seem to be the thing to have…
The Double-Wide – Heart Eyes Open / The Monahans / Rain Horses
Trees – Vanilla Ice / Mad Mexicans / Forever Sunday – considering that my daughter’s very first words were, LITERALLY, “ice ice baby”…well, you get the gist.

Most important event of all, though, is the D.E.E.P. Deep Ellum Art Walk. I’ll be there, will you?

Also, don’t ferget…(click on the links to find out)

Deep Ellum Goes Green…

Posted by Cindy on 14th September 2009

Even though it was pouring, and I mean pouring down rain throughout the entire event, I still say it was a raging success.

DART Green Line riders came out in droves to sample food, music, artwork and everything else fabulous Deep Ellum has to offer.

Big thanks to Randee Prez (our stop’s organizer extraordinaire), Tiffany Kieran and Frank Campagna for their splendid work coordinating the Mural Project and all the good folks who came out in the storm to show their Deep Ellum luvin’! Also a big thanks to the Barry Annino and the Deep Ellum Foundation for their help and support.

Getting decent video was very much a challenge. I had the camera wrapped in plastic, but it didn’t really help much. I had one rock-star sightng, the divine Don Cento was boarding the train at some point during the day. Therefore, Shibboleth is featured in the video, as is Sorta’s “Water Music.” Seemed fitting.

Wow. SaveDeepEllum.org and Pegasus News reports that my friend Brian Barnaud passed away. I’m still in shock. I reconnected with Brian a few months back when we met in Deep Ellum and figured-out that we went to high school together. I’d see him almost everyday thereafter, as we were neighbors. Brian was such a great guy, and a very talented photographer. He’ll be very very missed.

Da’deal is…The Happy Bullets, The O’s, The Felons, The Boom Boom Box, Lovie, El Gato, Moncho Poncho will perform starting ’round 6 PM.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a devastating genetic disease that affects tens of thousands of children and young adults in the United States. Research and care supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is making a huge difference in extending the quality of life for those with CF. However, we continue to lose precious lives to CF every day. That’s why your help is needed now more than ever to ensure that a cure is found sooner – rather than later.

The UltraViolet Rock Show is a benefit with the specific goal of raising funds to support research to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. Violet’s Daddy plays bass in El Gato, and Mommy heads up Lovie. Violet was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at 15 mos. old in November of 2006. Our first year, we raised just over $8,000 and last year we rounded out at $13,750. Thank you to everyone who supported and continues to join us in our fight to find a cure for CF.

There will also be a silent auction of original artwork by local Dallas artists.

What else? Silk Screening, CDs, T-Shirts, Stickers, Photo Booth and more fun than you’ll have the rest of the year!
