Tonight To Do…

Posted by Cindy on 12th September 2009

At first this shindig was gonna be at the Longhorn Ballroom, closer to home. At second, it was moved (or something) to Lola’s in the Fort. At third, I wanted to be at this show more than I want to lose a few pounds (and I REALLY want to lose lbs.). But having spent 5-hours in pouring rain, my feet immersed in 3-inches of rushing, cold rain water, I just gotta opt outta this one….and I ain’t happy about this…one…damn…bit.

PLEASE, do something really special for me. I know you owe me some kind of favor. Course, if you hit this show tonight, you’ll owe me another favor cuz it’s fine prime divine musical brilliance and you won’t have a better time anywhere else….gawd it sucks to be old and tired…these are two of my favorite bands, and they will be yours too, if they aren’t already…

Lookie what we got to do…

Posted by Cindy on 10th September 2009

There are so many special events going on this weekend. I’m going to start layin’ it out here on this post, and will most likely continue to add to it…or not cuz I gotta lotta territory to cover…

n148887122552_8851

I’ve been a longtime fan of the magnificent George Wallace III, so his G-3 show has me positively giddy with anticipation.

The exhibit runs through Saturday, September 12th at Kettle Art Gallery.

I promise you’ll love everything you see…I drove around the block a couple of times last night looking for somewhere to park that don’t boot (I was plumb outta change), but no dice. However, the peeks I got inside Kettle made my mouth water for a George III collection. Don’t miss this one, kids.

UPDATE: Just got word from the folks at SMOKE and tonight’s event has reached capacity. Sorry kiddies, we missed our chance. However, I still highly recommend that you go on out and try ‘em! They’re are gonna be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

A BBQ joint for vegetarians! Now everyone can chow-down with glee! Smoke, the newest addition to Oak Cliff, is throwin’ the grand opening party of the century. They done brung in the big-guns.

Whatchoo talkin’ ’bout Willis?

Well, Kinky Friedman is going to be our host with the most and your musical entertainment couldn’t be finer with Slobberbone, Sarah Jaffe, Shoot Low Sheriff, Spooky Folk and DJ Repo on the vinyl.

Can you really ask for more? Yes. Yes, you can. Smoke will be serving-up some tasty vittles, including free samples…

handleA slow burn thick with Southern style has arrived in Dallas with SMOKE. Fresh from a renovation and concept overhaul, the Belmont Hotel’s restaurant reemerges as a homage to an old fashioned smokehouse, with hardwood cooking from scratch and authentic Southern flavors. Led by chef/co-owner Tim Byres, inspired by his recent travels to America’s smokehouse roots, SMOKE will offer patrons a culinary experience that satisfies both the palate and soul. Employing time honored cooking techniques and recipes with a commitment to local ingredients, SMOKE is down-home cooking done right.

With two dining areas, a bar and rustic casual patio complete with live music, SMOKE will lend itself to both the foodie and the come-as-you-are crowd. Chef Byres’ Southern Inspiration and appreciation for slow, hardwood cooking brings to Dallas a culinary experience to rival the best of the Deep South.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, patrons may order from a menu divided into four sections: at the Bar, for appetizers and small plates: From the Garden, for salads and vegetables; On the Stove serves hot sides and entrees; and On the Grill, for SMOKE’s Hearty section of barbeque and hardwood-fired meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. The menu will also offer several vegetarian options. All menu items are priced $25 and lower.

Diners itching to get down to barbeque business can order it old school with SMOKE’s family style BBQ Scantron menu – No. 2 pencils included. The Scantron let’s diners select their meat portion size – Sandwich, 1/2 lb, 1 lb. – and sides, all by filling in a Cold War styled form. Akin to a sushi menu, SMOKE’s Scantron lets hungry patrons bypass the regular menu for quicker access to a hearty meal.

Once orders are placed, patrons can enjoy SMOKE’s breadbasket, fresh-from-the-oven cornbread served with Kentucky sorghum molasses butter and homemade sweet and sour jalapeno jelly.

Diners may select from a plethora of sides to accompany their meat entrees, each made from scratch and inspired by southern appetites. Options include Blue Cheese Cole Slaw, BBQ Pinto Beans, Really Good Potato Salad, and a variety of homemade pickled vegetables: green beans, carrots, jalapenos, cabbage, and bread and butter pickles.

Sit down, tuck in and savor the SMOKE.

Dinner at smoke: scratch cooking start to finish. All cured meats and fish are smoked in house. We bake our own breads and jar preserves. We subscribe to a farm to fork mentality. Utilizing our garden as well as local farms when available – including all of our meats, poultry, eggs and dairy. Simply put, everything
we serve is made here or as close as possible.

These folks mean business when it comes to great (and interesting) food. The menu boasts such tasty treats as Foie gras & chicken liver pate with smoked red onion marmalade or smoke house salmon & duck egg mimosa with grilled asparagus or smoke duck breast marinated in cracked peppercorns, canella or Burgundy Beef, thick and smoky bacon, farm egg fritter, Smoke sharp cheddar, on a griddled honey bun with all kinds of pickles and BBQ fries…*drooooool…*

Check out the meat-lover’s menu here.

Check out the vegetarian menu here.

I’m feelin’ nelo yellow…

Posted by Cindy on 10th September 2009

nelo – Two Years Ago from illuminare on Vimeo.

Above is a video I came across on Vimeo. You can see a bigger production of the song here. I particularly like the version above. It’s more intimate.

nelonewdigitalart08_smallA dear friend hipped me to nelo (Justice Records) over a year or so ago. It’s a divine band out of Austin, and I was immediately madly in love. For one thing, lead vocalist Reid Umstattd has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. Ever heard. Add to that the talented musicians and songwriters and you have one helluva band.

nelo’s debut album hit as high as the #21 spot on both the Billboard Magazine “New Artist Album” and Heatseekers charts. The album has sold 20,000 downloads and had critics such as San Antonio Express-News taking notice, saying this about the band, “Soulful and organic, nelo’s music should appeal to jam-band fans, people who dig the lyrics and people who like a cool groove.”

They also have one very wicked-awesome-kick-ass website.

For Matt Ragland, primary songwriter and acoustic guitarist, the release of their debut album, nelo, was a dream nearly 10 years in the making; going all the way back to when he first picked up an acoustic guitar in high school. He was soon writing songs and jamming with school friends and fellow Dallas natives Stephen Goodson (electric guitar) and Chris Hill (drums). A couple of years later, while in college, Ragland was refining his songwriting and performing around Austin with singer Reid Umstattd while Goodson and Hill were perfecting their own chops studying jazz at the University of North Texas in Denton. By 2002, they all reconvened – along with another UNT alum, multi-instrumentalist Mike St. Clair (bass, trombone, trumpet), – and nelo was born.

Well, unofficially, at least. According to Ragland, nelo didn’t officially take off until August of ’05 – the month he and the rest of the band left Texas for Athens, Ga. “That was really the defining moment,” he says, “when I called everyone and said, ‘OK, I’m ready to really do this. If you want to do it, too, come and join me.’ I wanted there to be that unifying moment where we all packed our bags and moved somewhere with one goal in mind. It was time to get serious.”

Years before moving to Austin to Athens, Ragland had a feeling he had the makings of the perfect ensemble. All he lacked was a proper singer. “Reid and I had been going to Camp Longhorn in Texas together for many, many years – from third grade all the way up to college,” he says. “I remember Reid singing one day and being blown away. Our connection was immediate. I wanted to write songs and Reid wanted to sing. It was a good match.”

Fast forward a few years, and nelo was well on its way toward firmly establishing itself on the Athens music scene. But a homemade demo was stirring up quite a buzz back home in Texas, too — so much so that nelo was soon playing to packed crowds in both states. Among those drawn to the buzz, was producer, studio owner and Willie Nelson-nephew Freddy Fletcher, who quickly made a deal that led Ragland and Co. straight into an Austin studio to work on their debut.

The boys are hittin’ the Fort tonight for a really special show at The Aardvark and me thinks you needs to be there.

Rather than discuss every darn show in and around DdFW, I think I’ll try to keep my suggestions as to what sounds good to me…which a lot of shows usually do…so I’m limiting my choices to 4 per posting. Here’s my picks for this eve...

Zac’n'Bill

Posted by Cindy on 2nd September 2009

Zac Crain. My love for you has renewed, yet again. Not that it ever left, but it needed a little dusting off.

Zac wrote a simply splendid story on my beloved Bill Wisener and his sorta-kinda-but-not-really-new location over on Lamar for D Magazine and it’s a must-read. No excuses. Stop what you are doing and read it.

Walking into Bill’s Records on a July afternoon gives me the same feeling, I imagine, that people who grew up in Rust Belt towns get when they return home for a visit. It’s a soft punch to the heart, a mixture of guilt and sadness. I hadn’t been to Bill’s in maybe five years, probably more, so I didn’t see its slow slide into near obsolescence at its old super-sized North Dallas location. And I had yet to see its small-scale rebirth in The Cedars, snuggled up next to Poor David’s Pub, in the shadow of the Southside on Lamar loft complex.

Owner Bill Wisener is right where I left him all those years ago, sitting behind the counter near the front door, clad in his uniform of jeans and faded polo shirt. But apart from the young employee lurking near the counter, I am the only other person here, a head count that would have been impossibly small on a sunny summer Friday a decade ago. Back then, and for much of the two decades prior to that, Bill’s Records was sort of a musical clubhouse. It had the best records, and so it attracted the best employees, and the best customers, too. The aisles were choked with people thumbing through cardboard boxes, and the air was thick with debates over this band or that album and more than a little cigarette smoke. Bill’s Records was High Fidelity, but it was even better. It was the only place I wanted to be on a Friday afternoon…READ IT!

I’ve been a stones-throw from the old location on Spring Valley most of my life. I spent time there as a kid, but even more time there over the last decade. I worked for KHYI 95.3 The Range for awhile a few years back, and was front and center at every showcase they hosted on Friday afternoons. And while I have done some live video streaming at the new location (Erykah Badu’s CD Release to name one), I haven’t really spent time there visiting with Bill, as I should have done. Shame on me.

I love that man. I love his quirks, his personality, his genuine love for artists, music, vinyl and his customers. I’m going to visit him this week and thank him for all he’s done to keep me happy.

Thanks for the story Zac. You made my month…

PS – Bill’s Records still hosts the KHYI showcase every Saturday afternoon. Just log on to KHYI.com for more information and line-ups.

1st Annual Taste of Greenville is ‘a-comin’!

Posted by Cindy on 1st September 2009

maplarge1

UPDATE:

DALLAS — The Greenville Avenue Restaurant Association (GARA), sponsors of the first Taste of Greenville Avenue event set for October 24, has announced that the event will be changing location.

The great public reaction to the event — the first of its kind in Greenville Avenue’s history — prompted the Association to seek a location that was larger and more open than the parking lot at the Vickery Towers center on Greenville and Belmont Avenues.

The event will be held on the parking lot behind the Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Avenue. The date (October 24) and schedule (event opens at 11 a.m., closes at 6 p.m., sunset at 6:44 p.m.) are not changing.

As of this weekend, eleven GARA members have committed to participating, and restaurants from Greenville Avenue north of Mockingbird Lane are putting their plans together.

The number of restaurant booths planned is still set at 30, but the venue will have more space between the booths. Public service displays (Dallas Fire/Rescue and Dallas Police Department) will have an easier time setting up.

I can’t believe this is the 1st annual since there are so many great restaurants on Lower Greenville, but it’s gonna be one helluva 1st!

Save the date. Saturday, October 24th the 1st Annual Taste of Lower Greenville will kick-off on the grounds of Vickery Towers (Greenville @ Belmont). This shindig is going to be a neighborhood-style block party with local restaurants customers and fans of Lower Greenville invited!

Check back here in the coming weeks for more information about participating restaurants, other festive TOGA events and more!

Dada, Deadead?

Posted by Cindy on 1st September 2009

A promoter just informed me that one of her bands had to move to Poor David’s Pub cuz Club Dada informed her they were closing their doors.

I ain’t been hanging on any of the local media blogs’n'such as of late, so what’s the scoop? Anybody?

Update: well it seems I’m the only one in town who didn’t know Dada had closed. Hm. Call it working in Plano and living in Richardson, I suppose.

DFW Painting has come out strong in support of the local music/arts community. Pretty darn cool if you ask me.

The company plans to feature a “band of the week,” each week and a featured “band of the month,” complete with video performances and more. I hear-tell that they are also going to start sponsoring/hosting some local live shows, as well. Nice.
