Mmmmmmmm…chiliiiii…

I feel quite confident that this website will become my sounding-board for whatever the hell comes to mind. Really…don’t we have enough music blogs?
So today I’m going to tell you about a place you MUST try. It’s on the corner of Worth and Carroll in east Dallas, just a stone’s throw from Deep Ellum. This little joint has caught my eye several times cuz it had chiles and jalapenos on the sign. I could eat ‘em like candy.
Thing is, though, I’ve been on this “diet” in which I can eat nothing whatsoever processed and I’m limited to one “serving” of carbs per day. So I’ve been very picky about my choices. However, the menu looked pretty promising, so I opted for the stuffed jalapenos and a bowl of original chili. Oh. My. GAWD! Unfreakinbelievable. I literally almost turned the car around and drove back for another jalapeno.
Both dishes were spicy, fresh, flavorful, delicious, addicting, divine, splendid…I want more. I figured that they both had to be full of something bad, otherwise why so tasty?
So I Googled and found their website. The clouds parted and the birds started a’chirpin’…
Stuffed Jalapenos
This isn’t the usual greasy fried wad of dough with a tiny sliver of pickled jalapeno. We start with a fresh whole jalapeno and stuff it with three kinds of cheese, onion, lime and cilantro. A light coating of panko bread crumbs, the same stuff which provides the crunch in tempura, is applied and then the pepper is baked until golden brown.
…the very light coating of panko bread crumbs hardly counted as a serving of carbs, and allowed for the flavors of the cheese and the spicy pepper to come through….my Gawd, it was a thing of beauty.
Honestly? I’ve never really been into chili. It’s oooookaaay, but I wouldn’t drive 3 miles to get a bowl..until now…
Chili
We toast and grind whole dried chiles and spices and never use pre-made chile powder. Plenty of lean bison, fresh jalapeno, habanero, onion, garlic and tomato round out the perfectly spicy bowl of chili. If spicy isn’t your thing we also have a mild version. For those somewhere in between we will custom mix the spicy and mild chili until you get enough practice to handle the spicy chili straight up.
…I got the spicy and it was perfect. Absolutely. Perfect.
The menu is limited, which is fine cuz what they got, they got good. There’s an outdoor table, but it’s more of a take-out kinda place…for now. The owner said they will be expanding in the coming months. I’m going back tomorrow for lunch…you should too.
PS – they serve wings and burgers too…so much eatin’ ahead of me…
