So like I know this really good lookin’ attorney who lives here in Dallas. So darn good lookin’ that the first few years I knew him, I tended to get really flustered (like the time I spilled a pitcher of ice water on him at Bob’s Chop House)…anyway…he’s got this kid nephew in the band Nelo. Nelo is from Austin. Nelo is killin’…as in making a huge mark with their brand of poppy, rockin’ tuneage.
So like the Nelo kids have just released their debut, self-titled album and they are throwin’ a big party tonight at The Granada with Five Times August and The Slack in tow…

“In Love” by Buttercup - Photos and Video by Jason Parr
‘Twas John Dufilho who turned me on to Buttercup. I’d pretty much trust anything outta that man’s mouth, so I checked ‘em out and fell quickly in love…
The Head Sits Upside Down on the Top of the Head an 8 song EP recorded and produced by Buttercup, scheduled for release Feb 2008.
With no rules to follow except their own, Buttercup has managed to write, record and release three EPs within the last 10 months. Why? No one knows. But it’s this type of unusual yet challenging feat that Buttercup fans have come to expect and enjoy.
From playing via close-circuit TV into oil barrels at an art gallery, or kicking off an impromptu singing street parade, to conducting song- therapy with individual audience members on “confessional nights”, Buttercup follows its fanciful whims wherever they may lead.
The three EPs (Captains of Industry, Living Again and The Head…) each represent a facet of Buttercup’s sound; “Captains” is a rather noisy angular affair which aptly demonstrates their love for The Silver Jews and The Velvet Underground. “Living Again” showcases their more acoustic side, revealing softer and moodier melodies. And now “The Head…” full of rough hewn demo sketches and early eighties electronic beats skids right off the road and into the ditch. But taken as a whole, the three EPs still hold together as being singularly “Buttercupish”: sometimes impulsive, at times carefully crafted but always engaging.
This third installment, “The Head Sits Upside Down on the Top of the Head” is a diverse collection of songs in which Buttercup changed its recording style, planting itself a little outside of its comfort zone. Some of the songs are the original demo recordings: “Cure for the Cure” and “Blackwater.” Most of the others find Buttercup in a more singular mood, forgoing big stacked harmonies in favor of solo lead vocals. In this respect “Mom’s Love” is as stark as any Buttercup song gets. “Sleep With Me” veers way off the map, written from a song fragment found on a rehearsal tape, then collectively built up on the spot, in the studio. Its style, something Buttercup stumbled upon, might be called “Japanese Beach Boys”. Altogether, this rather long, strange EP, an eight song “extended-extended play”, teeters on being a full length release, and its sheer length may indicate more than anything just how willing Buttercup is to give. With one more full-length album to record, Buttercup continues to forge ahead, oblivious of trends and advice, with only one goal in mind; to do the best work they can and deliver it with the utmost zeal to those willing to listen.
So the loverly Ms Chelsea has gathered up 3 divine bands for one great show at the Double Wide on Saturday night. Don’tcha miss it or you’ll simply hate yourself in the morning…

Cottonwood Art Festival is a juried show. This year approximately 800 artists submitted their work for consideration. Jurors selected over 240 artists to exhibit their museum-quality work at the festival. The artists competed in 14 categories: 2D Mixed Media, 3D Mixed Media, Ceramics, Digital, Drawings/Pastels, Fiber, Glass, Jewelry, Leather, Metalwork, Painting, Photography, Sculpture and Wood. A list of this year’s artists can be found on the Event Artists page, and samples of their work can be viewed in the Gallery.
Fishing for Comets and Oso Closo are two good reasons to spend the afternoon at Cottonwood Park.
This year, the festival selected two featured artists: painter Guilloume. More information on the artist and her work can be found on our Featured Artist page.
Cottonwood isn’t just about the art, though. The festival also features local bands who perform the best in rock, country, jazz, blues, swing and folk. Be sure to check out the courtyard, where you can sit in the shade by the lake and relax while you enjoy the music. Food and spirits are also available in the courtyard.
ArtStop (link) is the childrens’ area at Cottonwood. It features arts, crafts, and activities for children of all ages. Visitors will have the opportunity to create a sculpture hat from scrap, design a masterpiece in plaster, add to our enormous collage, or practice sculpting clay. Don’t miss this opportunity to explore your creative talents!
Whether you’re shopping for art, listening to music, enjoying the outdoors, or making art of your own, Cottonwood has something for you.

Artistically Speaking:

City of GodPhotography and Video by Hal Samples and Hugo Elias
Performance by Denton’s Florene!
These are portraits of Brazil, but these are not travel photographs. There are no misty vistas in this installation. There is no kitsch or touristy smarm here. These are images taken at eye level with a culture plagued by human trafficking, gun smuggling, drug running, and gang warfare. These are portraits of people who live in the muck, waist deep. There are videos of mothers, confessing that they are afraid to send their children to school because the school bus may be run by human traffickers. There are photos of nine year old boys with tattoos, twitchy and just waiting for a reason to attack. This is installation shows up front the complete chaos that is everyday life in Brazil, where the average life expectancy for young men is twelve. Leave your blinders at home. Come look into a completely different way of living.
