DALLAS – March 31, 2008: RE*COV*ER, a mural series project sponsored by the Deep Ellum Association and the Deep Ellum Foundation, embraces the new and changing face of Deep Ellum’s future. The theme, “RE*COV*ER,”vspeaks both to the recent history of the Deep Ellum tunnel and how artists have traditionally played a key role in thevdevelopment of the neighborhood.
Deep Ellum has always prided itself on being an artist community and a collaborative environment. In reclaiming it’s artistic roots and a strong sense of community, there exists a respect for original works of art. Community leaders and neighborhood activists developed the idea for a mural series competition to assist in attracting artists from around the state and engaging them in the Deep Ellum community. Conceived to help beautify the community, the Re*Cov*Er Deep Ellum Mural Series seeks to regain original works of art to help create a new mural district in the heart of the Deep Ellum neighborhood. Artist and gallery owner, Frank Campagna, who served as artistic director for Tunnelvisions and the Deep Ellum Art Walk, will coordinate each installment of Re*Cov*Er.
The competition is open to all Texas artists, designers, students, teachers and community groups. Either working
individually or in teams, they are invited to submit mural designs that honor the artistic roots of Deep Ellum. A panel
of judges and community leaders will select ten images for the public murals on Main, Commerce and Canton Streets. The competition will be conducted in collaboration with local galleries, the Dallas Arts Magnet School and the Society of Figurative Arts. Studio Fling will host an exhibition of the submissions for a public comment opportunity in early May. A call for entries to launch the Deep Ellum Mural Series Competition will be announced March 31, 2008, with a deadline for submissions at noon on April 30, 2008.
The first phase of the mural series, painted last year, is located along Elm Street and honors “Music Legends” with a connection to Dallas. The second installment of the Re•cov •er Deep Ellum Mural Series will encompass Main and Commerce Street and is not limited to any specific theme. Submissions for consideration may include people, places, or events. The costs of paint for the murals will be sponsored by the Deep Ellum Association, The Deep Ellum Foundation, property owners and private donations.
A special ceremony will be held to celebrate the winning artists and unveil the second phase of the murals on May 25, 2008. Three top prizes will be awarded, plus an additional People’s Choice award. The winning artists will receive a commission for their mural and will also be featured in the Deep Ellum Mural Series virtual tour documenting the work of each artist. The Re*Cov*Er mural series competition will be held annually and murals will be on display for a period of up to one year. There is a $20.00 entry fee.

Ever wondered what just might go perfect with a Midlake YouTube video? How’s about a tasty cup’o'joe, blended by Midlake’s own Eric Pulido? Sounds good to me…

There’s this kid. This kid from Round Rock, Texas, kinda the Plano of Austin. So anyway, this kid has got a voice like that of Sam Cooke or James Brown. This kid can also play a mean guitar. Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears. Write it down….no…wait…you won’t have to cuz they’s a’gonna be famous, in a matter of minutes…
I bring up this magnificent young band, not only cuz you need to know about ‘em, but also because they’s a’comin’ our way and you need to be there. Luckily, Constant Artists signed Black Joe Lewis back in January, so Lewis joins the ranks alongside some other huge FineLineLiveFaves such as Explosions in the Sky, Mates of State, Okkervil River, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness and The Paper Chase…just to name a few.
So here’s the dealio:

Miss this, don’t show your face ’round here no’mo’.
I dunno how long it’s been here, but the boy-child decided to up and clean his room yesterday, which produced a package addressed to me from Glurp Records. Took me about 2 seconds to remove the contents and place it into my ‘puter’s CD thing-a-ma-jiggy. Oh joy. Sweet sweet joy. ‘Twas the, not-yet-released, newborn, Getting to the Point is Beside It from I Love Math…
Dufilho (also the front-man for the Deathray Davies and drummer for The Apples in Stereo), says “Mostly, I wanted to write and record a very straightforward album. I wanted it simple, to the point, and didn’t want to hide behind effects, pedals, distortion, studio tricks or irony.
Drummer Philip Peeples agrees, saying, “On this record, I really enjoyed keeping it simple, playing into the songs, not through them. Also, John and Jason are amazing drummers, something that’s never far from my mind.”
This divine new album was recorded at Pleasantry Lane Studio (you should go take a look at the pics of this kick-ASS studio) and will become available in May, 2008. Meantime…I’ll let the music do the talkin’…PS - I was fiddlin’ with the sound in the beginning and my dog, Speck, decided to go on a barking rampage a bit into this quick listen…
Here’s a clever little video for the track, “Josephine Street” by I Love Math…look for Getting to the Point is Beside It to hit stores in May 2008.
The Rodney Parker CD Release party was un-freakin’-believable. “Off the chain.” “Off the hook.” …and all that stuff.
When Mount Righteous took off on their musical genius, around 8 PM, the joint was packed to the hilt. What brought me particular joy and gave me the warm and fuzzies was the huge crowd that showed up for the night’s performances. It was a range of happy concert-goers, from 18 to 80…hipsters to granny’s, it was a sight to behold.
The Granada is, hands-down, one of my very favorite venues. My equipment don’t stank to high Heaven of smoke in the a.m., the Granada team is always friendly, helpful and downright welcoming and it’s just a swell place all around for live music. Excuse me for a moment while I fetch a mop to clean up this gush. I can’t help it. I loved Friday night.
Bleu Edmondson is a kid. I had no idea how young he was until Friday night. I suppose it’s cuz he’s been a household name since I fell into this music thing, so I just assumed he was closer to 30 than to 20…I thought wrong.
I was already a Bleu fan, but after Friday night (my first time seeing Bleu and the band live), I’m a mega-fan now.
Details forthcoming…the above video was recorded off my live feed from Friday night…cuz the Granada airs these upcoming show videos for us to froth and gush and love and want to never, ever leave….the…Granada…
I’m contacting Nevada Hill post haste. I want this album cover enlarged and framed and hanging at FineLiveLine.com Headquarters. I want the album too…hm…guess I need to get my ass to a show…’specially since I missed the album release last night…harrrumph…

Rodney Parker & 50 Peso Reward is puttin’ out a new album. I got it. I’ve played it like a gazillion times and loved it each and every time. If you be a fan of Old 97’s, Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash and the like, the RP&50PR is your band. Hell, I even heard a little Counting Crows here and there on this divine new album, The Lonesome Dirge.
I’d sit here and gush and gush over this new album, but why should I when, not only you can getcherown damn copy, but your ass needs to be planted at the Granada Theater tomorrow night, alongside mine.
