Garage Sale? Anyone?
Posted by Cindy on January 5th, 2008

As you can see, I tend to be a pack-rat. However, this new year has afflicted me with an overwhelming urge to purge. Hey a rhyme! I’m a poet and didn’t know it! Heh, never get tired of that one.
So I spent the day cleaning up that big mess. Going through boxes, tossin’ out stuff. Goin’ through boxes that ain’t been opened since the 90’s. Literally. I came across a few things that I just can’t find a reason to discard. Here they are. Some are bits and pieces of Dallas…long gone…

Nearly every Saturday when I was a kid, my mom dragged us to the Quadrangle. Nearly every Saturday in my 20’s and 30’s my best gay buds dragged me to the Quadrangle. I love the Quadrangle. My favorite store, one in which I spent literally hundreds of hours, was Legacy Trading Company. I have several things from Legacy, and I still love them dearly. I found my old “bowling collection” today, (see above), both of which I purchased at Legacy. The store later moved to the West Village, and as of late, closed its doors for good. Sucks.

Today’s Dallas Woman – circa April 1997 – I just like the hair.

The Met with it’s FM pull-out. Master Tim Rogers is all over the damn place, both as “Mr. Funny Guy” and his plain-ol’-self. Did I mention I loved The Met? I did. – Circa May, 1997.

The Official Dallas Visitors Guide – circa 1997 – My favorite ad inside the back cover (see below)…

I prolly shouldn’t post this, cuz…well…cuz. My passport circa 1985. I like the hair…

Jewelry I actually wore – circa 1980’s. And yes, those are clip-ons…

My American Airlines Flight Attendant scarf. I prolly should let that go, huh?

My Cult of Nourallah Membership Card.

The last of my cassette tapes.
1. Frankie Goes to Hollywood – Welcome to the Pleasure Dome
2. New Kids on the Block
3. Erasure – Wild!
4. Jack Allday’s Swing Shift

My City of University Park security deposit receipt for my rental at 4151 Glenwick Lane – circa 1996

I have absolutely no idea why I kept this Overnight section of the Dallas Morning News, but it did have one interesting tidbit about the Q102 firing of Bo & Jim and the hiring (in their place) of Lex and Terry. I’m’ keeping it, anyway, because it was penned by the late great Al Brumley. – Circa April 23, 1997.

My 2003 Dallas Observer “Reader’s Choice Award” for “Best Blog.” Man, I could go for a martini about now.

The very first CD Johnny Lloyd Rollins slipped into my sweaty paws. ‘Twas at Standard and Pours. Circa? I think about 2002? or ‘03?

A couple of my favorite CDs that have been long gone until I found ‘em today…
Lauren Fine – For the Breaking
Meathammer – sitting around…waiting to die…

A print that Broose sent me, just cuz. I love that man.

The Fishing for Comets key chain that sweet, precious Camille made.

My personal photo of Joyful Sinners.

A blurry check I wrote to Eureka! Restaurant in east Preston Center. Well, not anymore. But when it was there, it was grand. Really healthy fare, either to take out of eat in. I wrote them a lot of checks. Circa 1996.

My old “Pulse” card from Texas Commerce Bank on Hillcrest near Snider Plaza. Circa? Dunno…a long time ago.

I used to be a garage sale/estate sale freak. I love old things. I love things that belonged to those passed. Things they loved. I found this old cigarette case that I got at an estate sale in Oak Lawn about 14 years ago. I polished it up and fell in love again.
I’m think I’m going to begin again that old tradition of estate-salein’. Yeah, I think I shall…

That looks like MY garage, except yours is better organized.
I miss Al Brumley and The Met as well.
That FGTH cassette looks like it did hard time in the floorboard/on the dash.

Wow, some very interesting old Dallas junk here. Brought back a few memories for me, too. By the way, I have that same passport photo. Weird.

Ah, Al Brumley… What a great guy. Al and my uncle Ed were best friends.
Al used to come to our family’s gathering every Christmas morning. He was a sweetheart.

Jimmy, it was great saying “hey” to you last night outside Dada. That Frankie Goes to Hollywood tape was done played dry. I used to commute to get to my base for flights. At that time (and still am) I was really scared of flying…I know, but when I was working flights it was different than just sitting there in a seat. Anyway, Pleasuredome, the song, was the only thing that calmed me down during take-off and landing. I’ll never, ever, ever toss that tape out.
MM, I love old Dallas junk. Hell, I AM old Dallas junk!

Liles, I love you. But you already knew that. I miss Al too. It was so weird finding that newspaper section and reading it over and over, page after page, trying to figure out why I kept it. Back then, I knew nothing much about Al Brumley. However, just a few of years later, I did, and read his stuff regularly.
The only thing that stood out to me after I found it in a box full of other stuff, was his column. Weird. The good kind of weird, though.
