Goodwin? No, GREATwin!

Posted by Cindy on 31st January 2008

Today I finally popped in the promotional copy of (Fort Worth’s own) Goodwin’s much anticipated new album. Wow. Goodwin ain’t no pop. Goodwin ain’t no indie nor shoegazy nor experimental nor electronica. Goodwin, my friends, is a good old-fashioned rock and roll band. They do that rock-n-roll thing brilliantly. I’d go so far to say that their energy, live on-stage, is unmatched.

I would review it, but I really suck at any sort of intelligent review. I know the Stash Dauber will have something great to say, and I’ll betcha Mariani is already drooling in anticipation. I’ll stay on top of it…

Free Hashbrowns

Posted by Cindy on 31st January 2008

Yeah, so I stoled it from TFG, but it was worth getting caught. John Evans is like…like…well, I wanted him to be my future baby’s daddy. He so fine. That voice could melt frozen buttah…

We need to get that boy and his band to DdFW somehow. I booked him at Muddy Waters like 6 years ago, shortly after Richard Winfield and partners sold it. John called me at about 3 a.m. and said they were trying to pay him (and the band) with…ahem…Cocaine. That didn’t go over too well for any of us. I wonder what ever happened to those guys who USED TO OWN Muddy Waters. There are new and improved owners now who like to pay their artists with…*gasp*…cash.

A Quick Peek

Posted by Cindy on 31st January 2008

Well, hell. I’m behind. Thankfully Hunter is not.

The Hourly Radio’s guitarist Ryan Short shocked fans earlier this week when he announced in a MySpace bulletin that he’s left the band he helped create.

In a phone interview yesterday, the 27-year-old Dallas resident said that the breakneck pace of touring and recording started to wear on him. …Read.

Hunter also scoops Collin Herring’s return to Big D….Saturday, February 2nd at Opening Bell. I’m going to have a very busy weekend.

Down Austin Way…

Posted by Cindy on 31st January 2008

When I think of Austin Collins or Black Water Gospel, it always makes me think of Patrick. I got an email from Austin about his forthcoming album, Roses are Black, which prompted me to go visit Patrick’s This is Texas Music. He had news…

A quick update on our friends from Fat Caddy Records
Austin Collins announced a Feb. 26 release date for his second album, Roses Are Black. Centro-Matic frontman Will Johnson produced this follow-up to 2005’s Something Better. Austin shared the rough cuts last summer, and what I heard sounded great. Some of the previews are still available on MySpace.

Black Water Gospel is now The Century. The metamorphosed band — minus original guitarist Jesse Duke — makes its debut this Friday at Stubb’s. No word yet on a new release date for the band’s second album, produced by Brad Rice and originally scheduled to come out last fall.

Other Fat Caddy artists include The Band of Heathens, Brian Keane, Macon Greyson, and new addition Dan Dyer.

If you share the love, you can help Fat Caddy repeat as Best Local Label in the Austin Music Awards. Voting is open through Jan. 31.

Patrick, my darling, we’d best find time to hang out at this year’s SXSW. Perhaps an updated video interview with Collin Herring?

Read This is Texas Music, often.

I’ve made no secret of my deep, almost creepy, love affair with marching bands. LOVE ‘EM The best one of all will be marching our streets on Saturday, February 2nd for the Quick extravaganza, MystiQal…

MystiQal is all about the true New Orleans Mardi Gras with a Quick twist in Victory Park. MystiQal will be a night parade with beads and baubles featuring pre- and post-parties along the parade route, live music and loads of fun activities with food and drink that celebrate everything that is Mardi Gras.

All activities will kick off at 5pm with the opening of the street festival, located on High Market between Victory and Houston Streets, in the heart of Victory Park. The Mardi Gras Run will begin at Houston Street and Continental. The Grand Parade will begin at 7:30pm, so pick your spot behind the barricades, anywhere along Victory and Houston Streets, and get ready to catch beads and baubles. Tahiti Talk

Posted by Cindy on 30th January 2008

Someone was asking me the other day why I do what I do here on this blog, as well as out in the music world. There ain’t no pay, that’s fersure. It really is about the music, and more importantly the people I’ve come to know and love. Tahiti is way way way way up on the top of my list of loves.

It was 4-5 years ago (or more) when I saw Tahiti perform for the first time. I was walking by Liquid Lounge and heard something really special coming from inside. The joint was packed to the point that it was standing room only, just outside the front door. It was cold outside. But I stuck around to watch this amazing artist, on tip-toe, my limited view over the shoulders of other fans.

You might know him from his work with P.P.T. If you don’t know him, meet him. It’ll make your entire day.

Speaking of days. Today is Tahiti’s birthday! Happy birthday, my love. Thanks for making me smile.

Come on out to SPACE on Friday, February 1st, for Pikahsso’s birthday bash, benefiting Dallas’ Homeless. Bring some warm clothes, undies, etc. to donate so we can keep those folks warm.

My Hero, the Guitar

Posted by Cindy on 30th January 2008

Rich’s blog post about Guitar Hero and Industry Bar made me chuckle. I’ve spent a ton of time at Fry’s as of late. I love Fry’s. I don’t know what half that stuff is in the store, much less how to use it, but everything is so shiny and ripe with possibility.

They’ve got Guitar Hero set up about midway down the main aisle at my preferred Fry’s. I’ve gone to the store no less than 6 times in the past couple of weeks, and every time, no matter the time of day or night, there is a huge crowd gathered around, either playing or watching. I’ve seen grandmas, businessmen, kids, Goths, you name ‘em, I’ve seen ‘em. It’s like they’d all gone into some kind of hypnotic trance. Next visit, I’ll let them all know they have a shot to perform for more than just Fry’s shoppers.

A SPACE’d Out Weekend

Posted by Cindy on 29th January 2008

You kiddies best make plans to meet us at SPACE this weekend. I gotsta girl-child comin’ to town for it and everything.

Here ’tis…and yes, there will be a live video stream going at all times…

Pikahsso’s gonna give back, again. Here are his words…

To anyone who thinks this is a joke, who thinks this is a game, who wants to bring negativity, who feel I want something out of this. This is dead serious to me, this is dead serious to Hal Samples, this is dead serious to Reid Robinson of Shanghai 5, this is dead serious to Dylan Hollingsworth. Im gone keep it real with yall when I told Hal I wanted to Help The Homeless he told me you know what come meet me downtown Dallas and lets go to where they be at, lets spend sometime with them lets see how they live. And im not gone front I was moved even more than I was before I started on this mission it’s a very scary situation out there all of us or alot of us are just a paycheck away from being homeless. Alot of these women, men, and kids look just like you so don’t you ever make a joke out of this with me. I take this and everything I do extremely serious and I just dont wanna be a regular artist all on YouTube and Myspace using my voice for foolisness im to damn old for that and alot of these artist that do it are to.

So I chose to take this route for my birthday about 3 months ago cause I looked at myself in the mirror at all the wrong i’ve done in the past, all the times I didnt give a damn, when I was young and arrogant and thought I knew it all. I know some think ahh this is some BIG joke but I don’t find it funny some of these people are out here on these streets sick mentally and physically. And alot of the powers that be are so far outta touch that they really don’t give a damn cause they got money they got a nice warm bed, they have food clothing and shelter. The way this society is set up though we all are expendable, we all can be a disposable hero. Now true you do have to get up and do something for yourself to make it in life but its alot of mothers out here on these cold dangerous streets abandoned by they husbands, boyfriends or what have you. And its not no joke so please dont treat it as one on my birthday I truly want to HELP The Homeless I know one 5 ft 9 black man from South Dallas cant change the world nor am I trying. But I do know that after all these years of doing this music i’ve finally started to get some recognition and I be damn if I waste it on this nonsense. I don’t have time to waste on trivial petty relationships, I dont have time to be fighting, I dont have time to not be productive. You never know when you gonna go and to be honest with yall including myself alot of us on here are way to old to be acting the way we do.

Laura Miller and the powers that be @ City Hall why don’t you try giving a damn, im not the only person in this city who cares its lots of leaders way before me who have been doing things for this city like John Wiley Price for instance. You got to give it up to Rickey Smiley I can honestly say this is a brother who gives a damn and I respect him for that. So anyway before I go to sleep I wanna say remember that homelessness can happen to you so don’t get so high on your hobby horse with this materialistic crap they force feed us to believe we need to have a social status. Get your souls right and do more than what you have. And to you young kids out there reading this dont waste your life away like me, dont wait till you get a certain age to get on the good foot grab them opportunities now while you’re young and take your life and education more serious. It dont make no sense how some of these teenagers act its pathetic and it all goes back to the parents who are not guiding them right. That’s why you hear me being so real about what I go thru and have went thru to let you people know not to make stupid mistakes.

Im out Yall
Peace
Pikahsso

THE STORY

Shoot for Change manifested after a fashion and makeup photo shoot in Stockholm, Sweden. After posting those photos on the web in November 2006, a couple of people asked me to take their photos and to name my price. I was surprised when someone asked me to do this, let alone want to actually pay me.

I thought about it and a few hours later, this statement was born: “All the money from every photoshoot that I do will go to a charitable organization.”

I typed it, marinated it, debated it, and after several days, I knew this was something I needed to do. I instantly bought a domain, created a website, and registered “Shoot for Change” at the US Patent and Trademark Office. After the makeup photoshoot, I realized that I truly loved photography and that money would never be a motivating factor.

My vision is that “Shoot for Change” will take a life of its own and will become a kaleidoscope of highly skilled photographers, models, designers, stylists, and a creative community with one thing in mind: to shoot for change and inspire the world one click at a time.

“Each one of us can make an impact that could change the way people see things. Each one of us carries a possibility to make an indelible impression that can transcend ignorance and apathy. Each one of us carries a possibility to make a difference. And that possibility lives in us every single day.”

Stuff I missed…Stuff I miss…Stuff missing….

Posted by Cindy on 28th January 2008

Steve-O, one of my top 5 written-word heroes, made his way to the Lola’s “grand opening.” I was gonna go…pinky-swear. But the boy-child has voiced a lot of intolerance towards my need to do anything outside the confines of the household on weeknights, so, there you have it. Thank goodness for the vicariously Fort Worth living I do, over at West and Clear.

I gotsta some pics and video from Saturday night at Space and Barley House. It woulda already been posted, but I’ve been nose-deep in trying to figure out video/live streaming/web-cams/editing/stuff. My head hurts. But I ain’t giving up….

Flashbacks (Thanks Liles)

I’m particularly fond of the ZOO logo. I had this sticker on my first car…a 1950-something, bright yellow Ford pick-up truck. One day, upon returning from Stewart’s Creek at Lake Lewisville, the sun setting behind the truck casting a shadow of the sticker on to the dashboard…we, in the truck, had a few beers under out belts and quite happily coined the phrase “Excellente’ Elephante’”….heh…later, upon arriving home, still a’buzzed, we all ate dog food by accident…aaaaaaah memories…

To Do Tonight - Saturday, January 26th

Posted by Cindy on 26th January 2008

Give yourself a break tonight from the parking nightmares of Lower Greenville, and the parking meter nightmares of Deep Ellum, and head to Grapevine for an evening of good vittles and great freakin’ music.

What happens when you cross a couple of hot broads with instruments and vocals that make ya wanna be a better man…and a better woman? You get blacktopGYPSY…that’s what…

Andie Kay Joyner and Heather Woodruff had to experience life before they felt ready to write about it. When they met in the early 1990’s, both were already accomplished musician/vocalists. Woodruff was an award winning fiddler coming off a two-year run as a support player in Branson, MO. Joyner was still a teenager, but had sung in front of thousands of people at countless performances. Each had grown up in musical families that exposed them to bluegrass, folk, and traditional country music.

For the next decade, the girls further groomed themselves for their own band by separately backing Texas artists, such as Mark David Manders, Max Stalling, Johnny Lee, Tommy Alverson, Bob Schneider, and others. The girls took a Tuesday night residency at the legendary Dallas honky-tonk, Adair’s Saloon for almost a year. After several failed relationships, a handful of song-worthy misfortunes, and countless all-night jam sessions, their songwriting began to draw from very specific situations. Soon, there was more than enough material to complete an album. Woodruff and Joyner even co-produced their debut CD, blacktopGYPSY, with Austin resident Adam Odor at famed Cedar Creek Studios.

The album is a montage of styles representing the songwriters’ varied influences and phases of musical interest. The traditional country material one might expect of a fiddler and country vocalist is certainly there. blacktopGYPSY moved from the studio to the stage early 2006, and with the additions of stellar musicians, Sam Swank on lead guitar, Jerry Mowery on drums/percussion, Scott Harper on bass guitar, and Darcy Starcher on background vocals, are turning the page to a new era in Americana music.

These gals will bring ya to your knees with their music, their voices and their lyrics…so…go…dammit!

Some-a-last-night

Posted by Cindy on 26th January 2008

We went live at Space last night. Using Ustream, a really crappy webcam, and a 10-dollar plastic mic. It was fun as hell, but a tad grainy and not so fluid (note: much better live streaming quality ahead). I’ve got real video from a non-crappy camera I’ll post later. Also, got loads to put up here from the Barley House show…muy bueno…’twas. Meantime, below is the recording of some of the live video stream…I love that Kyri kid…
