Bloody-Stinkin’-Hell…again

Posted by Cindy on 16th November 2007

I was just severely taken aback when reading the news of the passing of the great Hank Thompson. Crap. Steve-O tells all here. Quite well too.

Working at KHYI 95.3 The Range allowed me the great honor of meeting Mr. Thompson on a couple of occasions. Nice man with a whole lotta talent.

I’ll leave this by saying that he’ll be missed. Go read Steve’s tribute, it’s much better than anything I could come up with…

What Now?

Posted by Cindy on 16th November 2007

I never met Jonanna Widner in person, not for lack of trying, though. When the girl done hit town, I sent out offers for lunch or dinner or drinks or whatever, but never heard a peep back. So I guess I’m not particularly personally affected by her recently received pink slip. Nor am I particularly surprised. From the few details I’ve overheard thus far, it sounds suspiciously similar to the firing of my friend Sam Machkovech from said same Music Editor position. But I dunno, so I ain’t got much more to say on the subject.

I’d love to see one of the following folks step up to the plate. However, I fear that the powers that be, over at the mother-ship, Village Voice Media, will can their asses too in a year or so…but I’m throwin’ it out there anyway…

My picks for the new Dallas Observer Music Editor (in no particular order):

Andrea Grimes
Noah Bailey
Jeff Liles
George Gimarc
John Freeman
Tim Rogers
Scott Porter
C.J. Davis
Damn, Snap, Danny’s right! Merritt Martin

I’d also like to request that whomever takes over the keys to the executive critic’s lav is somewhat…um…local. Please.

I wish Ms. Widner much luck in her future endeavors. Oh, and for what it’s worth, the offer to pick up the tab for lunch or dinner or drinks shall forever remain open.

PS: Zac Crain is runnin’ his own list over at Frontburner. Zac was on my list, but as he says in this post, there’s still a chance he might be mayoring one day and he likes to keep his options open.

Buh-Bye?

Posted by Cindy on 15th November 2007

News done broke. Danny filled me in first, then I high-tailed it over to Sam’s. Rumors run amuck that Jonanna Widner is no longer the music editor of the Dallas Observer. Hmmmm… keep all eyes here and here if you want to follow the news as it breaks…or unfolds…or whatever the hell news does…

He’s Just Sayin’…

Posted by Cindy on 15th November 2007

The new Red Monroe album, ¡Policia! ¡Policia! gets some sweet-sweet-luvin’ from a dude who knows his stuff, Tom “the Good Show” Urquhart over in the FW Weekly

Red Monroe’s sound has evolved quickly over the last few years. From the lush, layered, early-U2 stylings of the band’s first release to the athletic Arcade Fire-tinged punches of last year’s eponymous album, Red Monroe seems to have finally found its voice.

On ¡Policia! ¡Policia!, the Dallas band’s third album, the influences are still there, but now they’re relegated to the trophy room — where they belong…Read it baby!

SlugaLugaLug Wit’ the Boithday Boy

Posted by Cindy on 15th November 2007

My pal over at SlackerCountry.com just hipped me to a swell lil’ shindig that I’ll have to attend regardless of my 6 AM sign-in at work the following day. I think I met Tequila Brad via the old Slobberbone message board…or was it the unofficial KHYI board? Regardless, we dig the same music/bands, we became fast friends, meeting at shows in Fort Worth, Denton and even a couple of times at my place for Raz on the Braz. Be fooled by the Tequila name preface, the boy brings a mean bar with him wherever he goes. Me luvs him.

So this Saturday night, November 17th, at Dan’s in Denton we’s a’gonna ring in a new year since birth for my boy Brad.

Here’s the scoopage:

Saturday, November 17th
Dan’s Silverleaf
Performing: (but of course) The Drams / Band of Heathens / Todd Mankin
9:00 PM

Gifts encouraged that’s me just sayin’ – Brad would kick my arse if he knew

Phonin’ It In

Posted by Cindy on 14th November 2007

Yeah, so this is pretty off topic, but somethin’ done crawled up my ass, and I just gotta vent…again.

I freakin’ hate phones. I mean HATE phones. Always have. Always will. So the invention of the cell phone was a real pisser for me. I don’t understand who the hell everyone is talking to..all…the…time. In cars. In grocery stores. In church fercryinoutloud. It’s like a game on the roads these days. If the car in front of me or behind me or beside me or wherever…if they are swirving or driving irritatingly below the speed limit, I always wager with myself that they are on the damn phone. If myself would wager back with any real cash, I’d be a very rich woman.

Both of my parents grew up in the Park Cities, one in Highland Park, the other in University Park…just like the Montague’s and the Capulet’s…heh. When my babies were…um…babies, I moved them into a little place over on Lomo Alto so’s they could attend HPISD. Man I miss the Bradfield days…but I digress. Back then, cell phones weren’t quite as prevalent as they are these days, thank God, otherwise I’d have been screamin’ from the rooftops to vote this thing through..

Cell phones need to be banned from cars, period. That’s all, nothin’ else. I figure Frontburner will buzz on and off about this issue, so meet me there, m’kay…

Posted by Cindy on 13th November 2007

Life has been so particularly kind as of late. Just about the time my girl-child sent me the above photo she shot, Jeffrey Liles agreed to a super-secret-super-exclusive-super-spectacular performance in our fair city—-more to come….suffice to say, both photo and forthcoming news complement each other in a divine and delicious way….

Best Day Ever!

Posted by Cindy on 12th November 2007

Today was a good day. To rank it 1 out of a possible 10, I’d have to give it a solid 20. Today I dined at AllGood Cafe with Reid, Hal, Hal’s friend Melissa(? – bad with names), and Kate Mackley. We arrived about 2:02. We learned today that on Mondays, AllGood closes at 2 PM. Thankfully, Mike was there and he allowed us to order and feast on AllGood’s delicious vittles.

Afterwards, Kate invited me into her car to listen to some tunes from the forthcoming Carter album. The album is brilliant. Glorious. Carter.

Then we all went up to SPACE to hang out, brain-storm and generally enjoy each other’s company. Carissa Byers was shooting a couple of adorable young un’s, one of whom skipped over and inquired as to the whereabouts of Cash. We pointed the 3-year old tot towards the direction in which he could find Cash. Once the boy positioned himself directly in front of the pooch, he pulled his trousers down to expose his baby smooth bottom, then pointed at said poo-hole for Cash to admire. That wasn’t the end of that, though. Once Cash had gotten an eyeful of little-boy-butt, the young child then faced forward and dropped his drawers so Cash could take a gander at the wee-wee too. I laughed until it hurt.

We have some pretty sweet things cookin’ up at SPACE, and from here on out, I’ll pretty much be a regular fixture ’round there.

Ya know, the holiday season is just around the corner. So if’n your bidness associates and/or company and/or family and/or friends are looking for the perfect SPACE for your holiday shenanigans, then drop me a line and we’ll fix ya right up. We have caterers, bands, and everything else to fit your extravaganza needs.

If you are an artist frustrated with the club scene, getting paid by club owners, not getting paid by club owners, whatever, then throw your own damn show at SPACE! We’ll work with your budget.

Lots more creamy goodness in the works, so stay tuned….

“Sure”

Posted by Cindy on 12th November 2007

This was the first thing I saw and heard this morning, shortly after the sound of the boy-child’s morning pleasantries. Thankfully, I watched this after dropping the young lad at his place of learnin’, cuz I actually wept while watching it. I don’t know exactly why. I don’t know if tears came so easily because of my deep love and affection for Hal—or perhaps because of the message I found in the film—or maybe it was the always emotionally charged music of my beloved Sufjan Stevens—or maybe because this is the first day off I’ve had from work in over 14 days and I’m emotionally as well as physically exhausted.

The last few months have left me feeling as though I’m floating. Not necessarily “going through the motions” of life, rather floating in life. It has been a really good feeling, floating….

….I stopped typing for a few moments to watch it again. This time I wept even more, gasping a bit for air. I don’t know why. I do know, however, that I’m thankful as hell that I was lucky enough to experience this beautiful work of art…

I think I’m going to tend to all the crap that needs tendin’ ’round here in a more hurried fashion. I’d like to get that stuff done and still have time to find Reid and drag his ass down to SPACE, so’s I can hug Hal and tell him in person how much I love him and how thankful I am for this film….maybe I’ll talk them into lunch at AllGood too.

Bloody-Stinkin’-Hell

Posted by Cindy on 11th November 2007

Jonni sent out word that dear Rusty Wier is now on the cancer battlefront, and a trip to his site confirmed it…

Posted Nov. 10, 2007
Rusty has been diagnosed with cancer and needs your help, love and support.
Not only are there expenses that need to be taken care of immediately, Rusty will be incurring a lot of additional bills for medications, treatments and medical care. He does not have medical insurance.

Donations to help Rusty can be made via PAYPAL. You do not need a PAYPAL account to make a donation. Proceeds will be directed specifically to medical expenses. Benefit concerts, special events, and further announcements will be posted in the near future on this website. He will also continue to do a few shows he’s already had on the schedule and we will continue to keep you updated as needed.

Well this sucks to high Heaven. I’ve been a fan of Rusty Wier for a long time now, both as an artist and as a great guy. He performed numerous times on our stage at Buck’s on the Brazos, and always had a smile and a nice thing to say whenever we met.

Like a lot of career musicians, Rusty is without insurance. However, you can help by clicking here and donating whatever you can to help him fight and win this thing.

A Hepolalot More

Posted by Cindy on 10th November 2007

Yeah, so I’m on a Sarah Hepola binge right now. The girl can write, and I lap up every delicious word she puts to paper.

I’ve been quite neglectful of her blog the past few months, mostly out of forgetfulness and, well, life stuff. But I’ve caught up, and found other delightful odds and ends in the process.

I remember the day I met Sarah face-to-face. It was several years ago. Chaz Knight and I hosted a weekly Friday show (Weekend 101) on TexasRadio1.com and I invited Sarah to come on the show and talk about all things Dallas Observer. She was the music editor at that time. I remember I liked her at first hello. I remember I liked her even more as time went on. She locked her keys in her car that day. heh.

I ran into Sarah sometime after that day, at the old Barley House. She had in tow one Mr. Lindsay Graham. That was the night I met Lindsay for the first time. Sarah was covering a show that night (I think it was Salim’s CD release or somethin’) and Lindsay was there shooting the photos. At the time, I had no idea they were, not only dating, but shackin’-up together. In fact, I don’t think I knew this fact until Sarah decided to up and move to New York. “…the decision is partly based on a breakup,” she told me. “Breakup?” I inquired. “Yeah, Lindsay and I broke up.” So there it was. Crazy thing was, I really dug both those 2 kids, still do. I would have taken great delight in knowing they was a couple in luvs. But I missed it.

Normally, I wouldn’t discuss personal stuff involving anyone else’s lives (other than my own) here on the Fine Line, but both Sarah and Lindsay have put it out there already, so I think I’m okay. Although I started reading Sarah’s ongoing series, “Crying in Restaurants” backwards, I’ve become completely addicted. Most ‘specially the parts pertaining to Lindsay and Sarah’s world together. It’s touching, raw, sad, yet really truly sweet. I don’t have any knowledge, nor understanding as to where Lindsay and Sarah are to date, relationship-wise. But I’m under the assumption that they remained friends. If not, don’t tell me otherwise, cuz I like my world where they still love and respect each other, even though they’ve moved on to other relationships.

In so many ways, Dallas is a very small town. Since becoming a part of the “local music scene,” I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with lots of local media-types. It’s been a pleasure and an honor. I just wish my favorites would quit leaving the state for bigger and better. At least I can still live vicariously, though. sigh…

I’m buckin’ for “Crying in Restaurants” to turn into a feature film. Lemme make a quick phone call and see what I can do…

To Cash a Hal

Posted by Cindy on 9th November 2007

Dayum, this almost slipped under my underwhelming radar. Any and all Hal extravaganzas that also involve Cash, shall always deem worthy of a trip to Deep Ellum, even on a school night. So there. See you at SPACE this eve…

Details, darling…

Tonight there will be a party in Space 2814 Main ST Dallas TX 75226

Its a party with a purpose…. to celebrate me… (Cash), four years of herotozero.org, one year of Space, and 62 years of Loren and Hal’s combined existence… … and the love you have for me. You will also be able to sign up and JOIN MY TEAM and do the 5k Walk for The Homeless that takes place in Dallas at city hall on November 17, 2007. (sponsorships are available)

Here’s how its gonna go down.

You roll in at 8pm. You lay 5 bucks on me and a get a specially designed wrist band – designed by me. The cash gets you in and beer – and more importantly to my fans – the cash gets you a chance to be seen with me – which as you know- is priceless. (I know that normally the first 400 are too cool to pay but this is a different reality…. not one of Hal’s realities either.)

Then you cruise the art, make bids and scratch my butt. Bidding stops at 11pm and butt scratching continues till dawn. The Frenz will begin music at around 8:30-ish with a multi-medi presentation to follow and Aton performs at 10:30.

During the evening you may add a new layer of ink to your body with the aid of some new silk screen tags (that I designed) on your attire… and make yourself a work of art in the photo booth with me… in between baby sitting that one drunk guy in the corner. You know the one…

The rules are simple. Dance, laugh, smile, scratch my butt and everyone brings and receives gifts of love… and stuff on your clothes… and photos of you and me… and hands that smell like me, too.

Your favorite humanitarian,
x,Cash
