I got there just in time to watch my darling Colin Boyd pack up…dammit…but I did get to hear him perform “Juliet” while sitting in traffic. Click “Read the rest of this entry »” below to view the rest and hear the audio…

From all accounts, tonight shall be the last night the Gypsy Tea Room will be, and honestly it’s really weird. With the exception of Adair’s and Sons, I just always assumed GTR would be one of the venues that would always keep its doors open. Not to be though…not to be…so if you want to bid your fond farewells, then tonight’s the night.

In case you been livin’ under a rock ‘er somthin’ - lemme hip ya…or better yet, I’ll let Glen tell ya…
I began writing my own material in 1987 as a 15 year old. At 21 I played my first ever live show in a trio. In 1994 I met current songwriting partner and drummer Pete Young. We gelled in a fantastic way. By 1996 I began to make strides as a songwriter, as Liquid 3 self released its first album.
In 1998 I joined Denton band Chomsky. Between 1998 and 2002 Chomsky released 2 albums that drew much critical acclaim in Texas, A Few Possible Selections and Onward Quirky Soldiers. In 2005 I began recording In Between Days w/ engineer Jimi Bowman and my songwriting partner Pete. We recorded 9 songs , then in a 2nd burst of creativity recorded 4 more songs in September.
In 2006 we spent spare time fleshing out the songs and cutting the record down to 11 songs. The finished product is very different from what many expected! I hope the listener enjoys spotting the things in my writing style that might have helped shape some of the Chomsky work we did. Clay Pendergrass played an integral part in the recording process with his unique bass work. Jimi Bowman’s studio provided the perfect setup for us and his love of retro instruments helped me realise the sounds that gave this record its unique atmosphere!
Glen es muy bueno.

Here’s another good show and the poster is pretty self-explanatory. My only dispute is that this show is tonight, not August 19th. Click on the poster for ticket information and other such stuff.
“Tender” by Black Tie Dynasty
====================================================== 1919 Hemphill They say: JUDASCOW: Ryan Talleys solo noise thing. Don’t be fooled, not all noise is bad. Judascow is probably the most amazing noise band I’ve ever seen. He uses a guitar, keyboards, pedal effects and shows a movie while he does it. Movies that I sometimes make. ROCKET FOR ETHIOPIA: Really spastic hardcore thrash stuff. Screamy vocals by a gangly gent. http://myspace.com/rocketforethiopia ETCHASKETCH MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE: I’ve never heard these guys but I’ve seen one of their other bands and it was really awesome. It’s Matt Jones (who’s 13) playing drums while this other guy rips it up on the bass. YOu guys can all meet Matt Jones, the man who ripped out his own tooth to win a scavenger hunt.
This is a straight up benefit show for 1919 Hemphill. 1919 has enough money to pay rent, but we owe money to Cri who’s paid the electric bill the last two months. We owe him like $400!! So come to the show and buy a T-shirt or a comp CD or something.
I understand there’s another show going on that night so I’m not expecting a huge turnout. I’m sure it will still be fun and most likely appreciated by me.

“Juliet” by Colin Boyd (One of my favorite songs ever)
Looks like that fat lady done sung her song afterall….
I’ll have much more to say on this, and the entire campaign, in the near future, but I just wanted to let everyone know that — unless something glaringly amiss turns up at the city secretary’s office on Friday morning — I am officially out of the running in the mayoral race…Read more.
Well bloody hell. Zac woulda made some way-good changes in my hometown. I’m keeping my fingers-crossed that he’ll run again in the future. Hopefully just in time for my two youngster pending voters to cast ‘em his way.
Vermillion Lies was born in the bygone era of 2004 after sisters Kim and Zoe Boekbinder were reunited after many years. Zoe traveled north from the wild jungle of central america to teach her sister Kim guitar. After putting themselves on stage with an amplified typewriter and an assortment of other musical objects the sisters were off and running into the brick wall of life as musicians. Their eclectic music ranges from lyrical folk melodies to raucous circus ballads with toy piano and accordion. The sisters have earned a reputation for an amazing live performance and beautiful arrangements. They craft their songs with guitars, pianos, typewriters, toy pianos, washboards, pots and pans, broken pipes, old steamer trunks and lobsters.

Scott Cullum is leaving us to head south and seek his fortune. The Dirt Blazers? Well, they’s talkin’ ’bout name changes and band changes and changes and changes. Me no care as long as they keep performing and Chris keeps writing.
The Moon Bar - Oliver Future CD Release w/ Eastside Massive / Moss Bluff
It seems like a million years ago that Chaz and I started hearing rumblings about a Fort Worth based band called Horses. After an exhaustive search, we finally tracked the boys down and invited them in the studio for another TexasRadio1 interview. ‘Twas Jordan Richardson (formerly of Soviet Space too) who captivated us and stole the show, so to speak, during said interview. A little later down the road, Jordan’s other divine project, Oliver Future, along with fellow bandmates Noah Lit, Josh Lit, Jesse Ingalls, Sam Raver & Mingus Lit, up and left Fort Worth and Austin respectively and took off for LaLaLand. Oliver Future has made quite a name for themselves in Los Angeles, as well as throughout California, as well as the rest of the whole dang ol’ country. Thing is; you really should never miss a chance to catch the band live when they blow through DdFW, or Texas for that matter. Now’s your chance love.

Hey Patrick, I’ve been thinkin’ the same thing. I was wonderin’ myownself at this year’s SXSW where the hell Collin and Ben Roi Herring have been hidin’ themselves. Last time I saw either one of ‘em was at Maria’s Taco Xpress for the Sin City Shindig (pictured above) last year in Austin. I know Patrick and Alex Kanakis caught up with Collin and Ben Roi last year for a video chat - but that’s not mine to post no mo’. Oh yeah, and there was that fated interview in Fort Worth that never came to pass due to mixed-up directions and a pending conference panel, but only Hunter Hauk knows of what I speaketh.
I thought of the Herrings again today while visiting Patrick, cuz it seems he done been wonderin’ the same thing. Aaaaah great minds and all that blather. For example, The Other Side of Kindness, as well as Avoiding the Circus still sit in my stack of best albums ever. Below are a few of my particularly favorite tracks.
I know Collin was in the studio with some pretty heavy-duty musical hotshots, working on his third album. That’s all I know. Wherefore art thou Collin Herring? Where you be, man?
I’ve fallen in love with many a child-band over the past few years. What can I say? They’s startin’ out talented earlier and earlier in life. One such child-band love that I’ve carried around with me in my pocket-book is the divine Voot Cha Index.
‘Twas a freezing cold February morning at the old Good Records on Good Latimer where I had my full recording set-up to catch audio of the Good Records 5th Anniversary Party. This adorable little group of youngsters took the stage first thing that morning, and I’ve yet to stop grinning like a silly fool since.
Voot Cha Index is a delightfully quirky band, full of life, full of energy and most definitely full of talent. The guys have finally released a 7-incher of the vinyl kind, and it’s in your best interest to head over to Good Records for your very own copy. Just for good measure, here’s a taste…
“The Talking House” by Voot Cha Index
The kids ain’t so much kids no mo’ though. I think the bulk of the band graduates from high school this year, and, finger’s crossed, they’ll be giggin’ again real soon-like.
I can’t stress enough the genius of Jeff Liles. I simply cannot get enough of that man. Jeff just offered-up a new work of art, which includes music from the fabulous Cricket Taylor. Makes dreary Friday morning clouds clear way for sunshine and dew drops…heh…just click and listen below. Jeff remembers back to his days DJing at the Slip Inn in Dallas…
Sifting through the piles and piles of press kits, CDs, old show flyers, et al, I’ve come across lots of bands who up and left our fair state for the bright lights of Hollywood. Just yesterday I came across my copy of Mur’s self-titled CD and wondered how Max and the boys were doing out in La-La-Land.
Then today I was over at The Double Wide and noticed that Mur is scheduled to perform there this month! Praise the rock Gods!
I think the first time I met Max Hartman, he was bar-managing at Muddy Waters, I was managing/booking for The Lonelies at the time and had wrangled ‘em an Artist in Residency stint on Thursday nights for an entire year. Max and I saw a lot of each other. We hit it off right away, and I learned that he had a long, and successful history in the Dallas music scene, including a stint with the great TOOMuchTV. Max was/is also an actor, so the announcement that the band was relocating to L.A. a few years back wasn’t exactly a shocker…but it was a bummer for us Dallas fans of Mur.
However, Dallas fans rejoice! Check it:

You may have heard the rumblings that there’s a possibility that Zac Crain may or may not have been taken off the May ballot for his run for Mayor of Dallas. Let’s just say this…the fat lady ain’t done sung yet.
They are still in the process of verifying several signatures that will (hopefully) put our boy right back where he belongs. So it’s bidness as usual at Crain headquarters, and will remain so until…until he wins, dammit.
In keeping with his downright fun and entertaining campaign, there’s another big shindig goin’ down this Saturday, March 31st with spectacular bands performing and Zac’s team out in full force. Here’s the skinny…
I know I’ve talked about Mike Damron a lot ’round here lately. What can I say, I love the guy. I came across the above photo this morning, dating…way the hell back…during the time Mike played (bass I think) with local band Tablet. He’s prolly gonna kill me for posting it, but what the hell. Also pictured is Mike’s brother Jim - my bestest friend and favoriteest person in the whole world. I loved that little house Jim lived in over on Worth Street…sigh…aaaaaaah the good ol’ days…

In case you didn’t notice, the last two bands standing in our March Madness bracket battle are Dirty Dialect Click and Smile Smile.

Overheard while passing the girl-child’s room this a.m. - “omigawd, this Modest Mouse album is like the best album of the year!” The girl-child has picked-up her Momma’s eccentric habit of talking to one’s self…
A while back I directed you darlings to a splendid little short film depicting a snippet of life over at Exposition Park. The film was produced, directed and shot by local Dallas film makers, Tiffany Kieran, Kevin Nash and Amanda Howe.
While I try my darndest to stay on top of things that entertain in DdFW, sometimes things just slip past my feeble brain and on to the floor. Like this post about The Night of the White Pants that Bobinsky posted like a week ago. I need to ketchup on my reading.
My boy Lance Yocom over at Spune Productions will feel very close to my pending new home, as he’s been invited to handle national booking for the way-cool-hot-n-hip Mohawk in Austin.
The venue has hosted numerous national bands, killer SXSW showcases, received supportive press and an overwhelming response in the short five months of opening its doors. It has already been a pleasure to work with the good people at The Mohawk. We both share the same vision and long-term goals for the room and have lots of exciting things in the works. The venue continues to make improvements and renovations to raise the bar on artist/audience experiences.
Local and regional booking will still be handled by the divine Rosa Madriz (Green Potato Ventures), so look for the same amazing shows the Mohawk has been crankin’ out all along…liiiike the ones below who have all graced the Mohawk stage…
Thurston Moore, Menomena, Bill Callahan, Jonathan Meiberg, The Long Winters, The Black Angels, Ghostland Observatory, The Ponys, Pattern is Movement, Okkervil River, Shearwater, Earl Greyhound, Black Before Red, Pink Nasty, The Lemurs, What Made Milwaukee Famous, The Blow, Jana Hunter, Dressy Bessy, Vindaloo, The Emergency, Lazar Wolf, Ice Age Cobra, The Early Tapes, Peter & The Wolf, Nicole Atkins, Architecture in Helsinki, Teitur, Lexie Mountain Boys, Hello Stanger, The Shivers, Apes and Androids, Headlights, Sparrow House, The Forms, Tom Brosseau, Stars of Track and Field, Shedding, Nick Butcher, Paul Duncan, Slaraffenland, Paul Crow, Life and Times, Broadfield Marchers, Twilight Sad, Smoking Popes, Loney, Dear, Peter Buck & Robyn Hitchcock, Peter, Bjorn, and John, The Broken West, Oxford Collapse, Oakley Hall, Dirty Projectors, Frida Hyvoden, The Besnard Lakes, Bishop Allen, I love you but I have Chosen Darkness, Richard Swift, Evangelicals, Ladyhawk, Catfish Haven, David Vandervelde, Briertone, Sea Wolf, St Vincent, Midnight Movies, The Carribean, Annuals, Imperial Teen, Apostle of Hustle, Thunderbirds are Now!, Black Helicopter, Pagoda, Montract, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Tall Firs, MV/EE and the Bummer Road, Magik Markers, Gown, Charlambides, White Denim, Page France, Twilight Sleep, The Galaxy, Asobi Seksu, Frog Eyes, The Early Years, Margot & the Nuclear So & Sos, Prototypes, Lil Capn Travis, Moonlight Towers, Wax Fang, The Cops, The Blakes, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Lymbyc Systym, Hourly Radio, American Flamewhip, Loxsly, Weird Weeds, Dead Science, and Kurt Loder.
Below is the Mayor of Austin, Will Wynn (how’s that for a winning name…or should I say a wynning name…bwahaa…), speaking at the Mohawk during the Austinist/Gorilla vs Bear/Gothamist show during this year’s SXSW. Pretty amazing little speech. Me thinks me like Mayor Wynn.
Seriously. Can you even imagine Mayor Miller saying these same words? Yeah. Me neither.
Congrats to Lance, Spune and the Mohawk! I look forward to many more fabby nights under the Mohawk roof.
First, I must say that I’m thrilled to see Speedtrucker gigin’ again. I had some of the most fun ever at several past Speedtrucker shindigs…or at least from what I remember…*hiccup*
My name is Michael Cox, former front man of Speedtrucker. We were labeled Dallas’ best live band. This was according to several newspapers, radio stations, etc. Who knows! All I know is we had/have the greatest friends and fans not only in Dallas but from coast to coast. We broke up in 2006 for several reasons. The biggest reason being that I was diagnosed with MS.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with MS it can be a very debilitating disease. MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses. In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken. Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS. (For more information go to www.mssociety.com
Alot of people have asked how it has effected me. I had my first flare up in March of 2005. I got a bad case of vertigo two times in 13 days. Both times I ended up in the hopsital for a short stint. At the time the doctors had no clue what was causing it. In August of 2005 I went blind in my left eye for about 10-12 weeks. That’s when I was diagnosed by a good friend and doctor.
For months I was told that I needed to be on Betaseron shots but they were extremely expensive. In December I was hit with another episode of vertigo and ended up in the hospital for an extend visit. After great research and support from friends/family, I started the shots. Since then I have been almost episode free. Which brings me to the purpose of Musicians Fighting MS. I decided to start this grassroots group for three main reason:
1.To unite musicians to help raise money for other artists who suffer from this disease.
2. To help them with paying for medicine, doctors visits, and all other expenses stemming from MS. 3. To support all MS Society sponsored events that help raise money for finding a cure. This is the very beginning of this group and I invite you to become a friend of this myspace site, get involved in events, and to spread the word about what we are doing here. We have several shows and events planned so please check our calendar often.

“Filmgoers eager to see a movie about heroism in the midst of moral ambiguity, about the superhuman efforts of one man against the engulfing forces of evil, about the competing and sometimes self-destructive dynamics of duty, courage and conscience, are hereby urged — no, ordered — to forsake the cartoon fictions of “Batman Begins” and rush instead to see “Shake Hands With the Devil: The Journey of Romeo Dallaire.” For a gripping, thoroughly involving account of a flawed but inspiring real-life hero, audiences need look no further.”
“Space” refers to the location at 2814 Main Street that serves as a home for Hero to Zero, my photography studio and a general facility for music, art, yoga and individual healing. It is my hope that Space can be a place for people to explore their talents and discover new ones for a long time to come. If you haven’t visited Space yet, contact me to arrange for a time to come by soon, or check it out online.
Announcing A.I.R.: Artists in Residency
Four great photographers currently comprise the first class of AIR at Space. Our first featured artist is Josh Haller. Josh impresses with his integrity and dedication. He comes to Space after spending 2 ½ years working at a church in Beijing, and embraces the opportunity to make a difference with his heart and art. Josh’s strengths are in artistic design, photography, integrity and spirit. His myspace can be found here.
Check back here to learn about other current Artists in Residency, who include David Leeson,, The Amazing Fred and Carissa Byers. All shooting schedules and studio availabilities can be found here soon. Applicants to be a part of the Artists in Residency program will be considered on an ongoing basis.
AIR and you
Artists in Residency do not work exclusively in Space, but each pledge 2 days a month to teach and allow anyone interested to experience photography as an art. One weekend each month, Space will be made available free to anyone to use to create, with the assistance of an artist in residency. The first open weekend will be March 17th and 18th. Contact me here to reserve Space for your photography, and learn from these amazingly talented artists.
The law resources of Central Dallas Ministries, a local community and human development organization, is now sharing offices at Space. In a turnaround from prior statements that homelessness was not a focus for Central Dallas Ministries, CDM CEO Larry Jones has pledged to devote resources to tackling the homeless problem in Dallas. This is good news for the homeless community, Hero to Zero and Space. It also gives me faith in the face of bureaucratic red tape.
The Central Dallas Community Development Corporation serves as the driving force behind the development of Single Residence Occupancy, or SRO, in Dallas. SRO is a subsidized development offering support for the single homeless person, and provides shelter, supervision, career support and medical help. Currently, 40 of 240 units in Dallas’ initial SRO development are available for homeless occupancy, but the CDCDC is working to expand this allotment to include all units, despite neighborhood pushback.
In addition to renting space at Space, the CDCDC will provide legal support and grant writing services for Hero to Zero, lending full security to our efforts.
Beginning on Tuesday, March 6th, SPACE will host yoga free to the public. Instructed by Chinook Wusdhu, a regular instructor at Tsada Yoga, the free yoga sessions will take place Tuesday nights, from 6:15 to 7:45.
There will be a six week trial to determine if attendance warrants continuation of these sessions. The last three sessions have brought out classes of 16, 28 and 19 students, respectively. Mats are available and donations are accepted, though all you have to bring is change for the meters. All levels welcome.
Wednesday Nights
Movie Night! Space will host socially conscious movies every Wednesday night at 9:00, starting on March 7th. Movies like Crashand Born in the Brothelswill be viewed, following discussion of movie themes to inspire and perpetuate action in the community. Free pizza and ice cream will be provided, though donations will also be accepted. The first movie to be screened at Space will be How’s Your News?. This heartwarming documentary from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone features a team of five news reporters with mental and physical disabilities. Please join us!
Coming Soon
Beginning this summer, Space will host an early morning recovery group. The opening of the gallery/downstairs area will continue to allow for extended programs, and support for alcohol dependency as it remains a priority for Hero to Zero and Space. Watch this space for details on meeting times and dates.
