Photo Reid and Hal by Hal Samples

Reid Robinson - I’ve been a huge fan of Shanghai 5 for years. I immediately took a likin’ to darling Reid and we quickly became friends. Reid is one of the most interesting people I know. He’s really intelligent, really talented and really a wonderful person. We’ve done a few great interviews together and hopefully will do loads more in the future. Look for the interview we did with George Gimarc to be posted later this evening or first thing in the morning. Seriously…fer real this time. Meanwhile check out Reid and his band Shanghai 5 on New Year’s Eve at Lee Harvey’s - details on the poster below.

Matt “my Muffy” Hembree. I remember the exact first minute I saw my Muffy for the first time. It was at the Richardson Wildflower Festival about 3 or so years ago. At the risk of sounding like a stalker, I just remember seeing him wandering around and finding myself excited about his performance with his band Goodwin that very afternoon. Muffy has done a few live webcasts with me - given me loads of advice over the years, listened to me bitch and moan and has been one of my bestest friends.

D.O.bservations Year End Issue

Posted by Cindy on 29th December 2006

You really didn’t really think I’d end this year without mention of the final edition of the Dallas Observer of 2006 now did ya? I think not.

The year-end issue is worthy of hopping in your car, driving to the nearest anywhere and picking up a copy. The music section is jam-packed with year end stuff. I won’t lie to ya, most of it is out of the local scene, but it’s a nice read just the same.

One of my favorite people I met in person this year is the one and only Andrea Grimes. That little missy has done gone off and won awards, written great columns (Girl on Top), which have kept me highly entertained since she started ‘em. Her last column of 2006 finds her “in a bikini standing on her porch in 45-degree weather holding a digital video camera and talking to herself.” You just gotta read it.

I never get enough of Ms. Wee Demon…

All this and the girl can sing too!

The Observer has been very very very good to me. From Sarah Hepola to Sam Machkovech to Jonanna Widner to Noah Bailey to Merritt Martin, to Rich Lopez to Mike Simmons to Allison V. Smith to Mark Graham to Jesse Hughey to his majesty, the great Robert Wilonsky - they’ve all been real good to me, my endeavors and more…and for that I thank them all.

Speaking of Robert Wilonsky…ol’ fingers of fury hisownself is always stirring up happier memories in my Dallas history. I literally gasped when I saw this post about the old Gemini Theater.

Those of us born and raised here remember well the good ol’ Gemini Twin Drive-In theater at the northeast corner of the North Central Expressway-Forest Lane intersection. The self-proclaimed “world’s largest drive-in” with 2,000 parking spots — which is where the Raquel Welch movie One Million Years B.C. was world-premiered in 1966 — was around from the mid-1960s till 1984, which I believe was the same year several high school classmates and I got, uh, a stern talking-to for smuggling in a case of Coors Light stashed in the trunk of a buddy’s Olds…

I was born and raised here in Big D. I spent many, many, many a summer evening at the Gemini. My memories as a kid was pulling up to the the big clunky sound box, settling it on to our windshield and kickin’ back for a night of movies under the stars in our jammies. When we got a little older, my brother, cousins and I would leave our parents to their Rated R movies and sneak over to watch our favorite series of films, the great Dr. Phibes.

My worst and final memory about the Gemini Theater came in the summer when I was just a mere 16 years old. It was dollar night. My boyfriend at the time thought it would be “hilarious” to speed through the ticket booth in order to save a freakin’ buck. Not only did he jump out of the car and start a fist-fight with the ticket guy who chased us down, I think we were the final straw carload of teens “thinking” they were “hilarious.” So the manager hauled our butts to his office, called the cops, and an hour later I stood in a cell with some “ladies of the evening” at the Dallas Police Station…sigh…

…take a look at the photo below…

…this is a photo of the actual Gemini Drive-In. It was big. See all those little posts that house the speaker boxes? Our “punishment” for sneaking in to the movie was to paint each and every one of those poles. It was late July - about 105 degrees - painting poles on the steamy concrete. Well actually my boyfriend, who ran the ticket booth, fought with the ticket guy and got us into this mess sat in the managers air-conditioned office sharing a bong…while I painted 2000 poles….argh…

Read the rest of the fate of that plot of land.

I luv ya Dallas Observer - thanks for all you do.

A Few of My Favorite People - Part IV

Posted by Cindy on 29th December 2006

I can’t remember exactly how I met Patrick Nichols. But I do know that I’ve been a fan of his great Texas music site (This is Texas Music) for a long time now. We share almost identical taste in music and both share a special love for Texas-based bands and artists.

Patrick joined me (and Alex) for audio/video interviews last year at SXSW, as well as a full day at the Fat Caddy Records’ showcase where we did an all day webcast with some of our mutual favorite bands, Macon Greyson, Thrift Store Cowboys, Austin Collins Band, Black Water Gospel and more.

Patrick, a family-man first and foremost, has agreed to host some interviews, shows and such with me once I make the move to his territory in the spring. I’m sure we’ll have some surprises for ya before that though.

A Few of My Favorite People - Part III

Posted by Cindy on 29th December 2006

Stellaaaaa…

I met a couple of guys awhile back who have been tremendously inspirational to me, as well as great teachers of fine music. They’s kids, so they knows the good stuff even before the big-shots know.

One dude is known throughout the world as Gorilla vs Bear. I call him Chris. Chris’ site Gorilla vs Bear has become the one-stop shop to obtain MP3 downloads, music news and all that is creamy, sweet and delicious in the world of Independent (and beyond) music. Chris’ success has taken him all over the country in order to blog about live intimate shows to 3-4 day music festivals. Gorilla vs Bear has become an award-winning site, and the nominations keep a’comin’. Chris also hosts a fantabulous show on Sirius Satellite Radio on Wednesday nights at 9 PM. I also consider Chris to be a good friend. He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet - and a lot of fun to be around. Having done a couple of audio Podcasts with Chris, I learned that he’s chock full of good faith, good values and integrity. Click here every single day.

My friendship with Chris goes hand-in-hand with my pal Garrison Reid, cuz Garrison and Chris are bestest buds. Garrison is one of my favorite people on earth. He runs an amazingly good show over at his site, Indie Interviews, so much so that I curse him at times for not bringing us more Podcast interveiws in a more timely manner. But just as long as he keeps crankin’ ‘em out, I’ll go there each and every day.

Since Midlake’s “Young Bride” was among Garrison’s Top 30 for 2006, I give you…

A Few of My Favorite People - Part II

Posted by Cindy on 29th December 2006

Artwork by Broose Dickinson

Only a few more days left of 2006…thank Gawd. What a crap year. I made a ton of mistakes this year, putting my trust into people who in turn neglected to fulfill any of their promises. I lost a family member. I walked away from a job I loved in order to concentrate on another - which turned out to be nothing but a lark for others involved. I allowed myself to be taken advantage of time and time again. Sigh. But I’m tired of looking back and so very ready to look forward. Let’s talk more about the good folks on the local “scene.”

2007 already has big big changes in store. By Spring, I’ll be living in the beautiful hill country, bringing you live audio recordings from venues in Austin, San Marcos, Gruene, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and more. By Fall, my baby-girl will be off to college and my dad will have sold his house to split his retirement time between Lake Ray Hubbard and Colorado. I think Glendon Farris has already left for the Big Apple, and my friend Frank Hejl is hot on his heels.

Glen Squibb aka Glendon Farris is one of the good guys. He has been another tremendous joy to work with during my 6+ year stint in the local music scene. He’s an amazing talent who has performed with the likes of Doug Burr, Current Leaves, and numerous others. Now Glen has set off on his solo career - left his Denton home for the bright lights of New York…at least I think. He’s been talkin’ about moving up there for awhile, and he’s got a couple of gigs comin’ up. Glen also ran hella great sound at The Cavern and Hailey’s, as well as most of the Spune extravaganzas. Glen always lent me a helping hand when it came to technical glitches with live webcasts to audio recordings at shows. I love this guy.

Glendon Farris “Don’t Fail Me Now”

Frank Hejl is another one of the good guys. He hosted a wildly successful Indie radio show on KNTU 88.1 for several years which garnered him several nominations for “Best Local Radio Show” at the Dallas Observer Music Awards. Frank has been an avid supporter of the Denton/Dallas/Fort Worth music community as well. Some of my fondest memories of the past years are the live webcasts I hosted at Standard & Pours, Hailey’s and Good Records. Numerous times, Frank was a part of the top notch team I assembled to assist me in hosting these live streams, interviewing bands, and general entertaining the listeners between sets. Frank was also the brains behind the wildly popular Mix Tapes and Baby Fights, an eclectic live show featuring superb bands, comedy routines and guffaw-filled entertainment. Frank also happens to be a talented comedian - which is basis for his move to NYC to chase and capture his dream. I’ll miss that guy.

A Few of My Favorite People - Part I

Posted by Cindy on 28th December 2006

Struggling record labels aren’t the only ones behind the scenes when it comes to keeping local music alive. There are many others who work behind the scenes to keep the music community exciting and always happening. Most of them are unpaid and some under-appreciated, but without them things would certainly change for the worse. Below are a few folks I’ve worked with, bitched with, cried and laughed with, but most of all shared in the music with them. These are folks without agendas, without expectations of something in return and who work, support and promote selflessly and tirelessly:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Frank, Amber and Frankie Campagna

Frank Campagna
Frank is one of the most talented artists I’ve ever come across. He has dedicated much of his career to the world of rock, punk, and music in general. If you’ve been to Deep Ellum, then you’ve scene Campagna artwork at every turn. Most notebly of course is the side of Gypsy Tea Room where you will find weekly works of art in form of 12′ x 8 foot murals of the performing bands and artists. Frank was also named the Art Director for “Tunnelvisions” a muralist project benefiting the Deep Ellum Association and was the quarter mile long tunnel welcoming folks to Deep Ellum. Sadly the tunnel was demolished to make room for the DART Rail. However, there is talks that some of the murals will go up in DART Stations ’round town.

Frank was also commissioned to develop artwork for Buddy Magazine, the Bronco Bowl, Nokia Live, the Black Forest Theater, the Palladium, Art Bar, the Agora Ballroom, Universal Rehearsal Studio, McKinney Avenue Contemporary, and more, more more.

Frank recently opened his own gallery, Kettle Art, and has seen great success. His exhibits are always exciting, creative and loads of fun.

Frank has also tirelessly promoted and supported the local music scene. He’s been a strong supporter (and promoter) of his son’s musical projects (Spector 45 / The Delcos / Frankie 45), which ain’t a hard thing to back since Frankie is one amazing musician and entertainer.

Tonight at Club Dada three of my favorite artists will take the stage for a not-to-miss extravaganza:

Hunky Carter Albrecht by Kate Mackley

Kate has also set-up and photographed some of the biggest shin-digs in town including everything Spune. She’s also kindly co-hosted numerous live shows with me for my past live audio webcasts.

Recently Kate started a superb new blog that’s chock full of creamy local goodness. Check out Etheriousity each and every day.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Hal Samples

Where do I even begin to tell the tale of Hal Samples? The guy went from a drug-addiction that landed him amongst our throngs of homeless - then he pulled himself out of it to become one of Dallas’ most respected photographers. Hal continues to give back to the homeless community, physically, emotionally and monetarily. His efforts to raise awareness of the problems on our streets have gained him great admiration and respect.

A Few of My Favorite Things - Best Record Labels of 2006 Part IV

Posted by Cindy on 27th December 2006

Denton has always been kind to me. I love it there, the people, the live music joints, et al. The men are tall, bearded, happy-go-lucky types. The women are sweet, beautiful and ever-so talented.

Some of my favorite folks on earth run a little label known simply as TXMF Records and it houses some of my favorite bands on earth such as Spitfire Tumbleweeds, Record Hop, Current Leaves and Burnt Sienna. Check ‘em out. Also, stop in at Secret Headquarters whenever you are in Little D…it’s a good place to hang.

Erv Karwelis is one of the nicest guys around. He’s been doing this music thang for awhile now, and he runs a good show over at his label, Idol Records. I’ve been a longtime fan of several of the bands on his roster (then and now) including Black Tie Dynasty, Centro-matic, Deathray Davies, The pAper chAse, [DARYL] and the Old 97’s. This year Erv added another one of my personal favorite bands to his list of greatness and things are already starting to happen for the splendid P.P.T.

I hope you enjoy these bands as much as I have over the years…

Put on the Kettle

Posted by Cindy on 23rd December 2006

I’ve been a long time admirer of Frank Campagna. I’ve been in awe of his work as an artist for years and years. The past couple of years, I’ve had the great pleasure and honor of, not only getting to know Frank on a personal level, but can sincerely call him a good friend. He’s a wonderful man, full of passion, talent, and true love of Deep Ellum and the art and music community.

Please join Frank tonight at Kettle Art for the last night of “Holiday Presence II.” There will be good things to purchase to give as gifts to good people you know and love.

Radiant* Goes to NYC

Posted by Cindy on 23rd December 2006

This past year one of my favorite bands in the world sort of fell under the radar. Radiant* was locked up in the studio, traveling the world, and basically leaving me wanting more of them than ever before. Then they resurfaced with a splendid brand-spankin’ new album, We Hope You Win, and now even bigger news…

…Radiant* was chosen out of like a gazillion bands (or at least 1100 or so) as “the best unsigned band in the country” and will jet off to New York City to perform in Times Square — to play on the Pontiac Garage in Times Square during this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration — on Countdown to 1 — alongside My Chemical Romance and P.O.D. — then their performance of “That Girl” will air on the Jimmy Kimmel Live Show. Pretty, pretty, pretty dayum sweet.

Many congrats boys! You guys deserve this!

Bella Union

Oddly enough, a whole ocean separates Denton and Austin from the fantabulous label, Bella Union. You can practically scoop up the the enthusiasm and dedication bubbling over from Bella boss Simon Raymonde with a spoon. Simon goes one step further, not just taking durn fine care of the bands on his roster, but he also reaches out to the fans as well. The man gotsta good ear for talent, which shows in his pickin’s of the Texas-based bands alone - Midlake, Robert Gomez, Lift to Experience and Explosions in the Sky.

Take a look-see and a listen-hear below…

Undeniable Records

I’m sure the musical blog-o-sphere is chock full of “best of” lists for their picks of the best of 2006. I don’wanna do dat. Instead, what sprung to my pea-brain, was to list my top favorite record labels of 2006. So here’s to you financiers who have pampered, cared-for, and made it possible for us rabid music junkies to get our fix(s) on an hourly basis.

First up, the great Undeniable Records.. And why the hell not? The boys over there put out one of the finest damn albums of this century, a little something I like to call Everybody Has a Dark Side by the wildly wonderful The Theater Fire.

They also house a couple of my other very favorite bands, both The Happy Bullets and The Tah Dahs. Es muy bueno. Look for more rich creamy goodness to ooze from the folks over at Undeniable in 2007.

Happy Bullets “Drinking on the Job”

Theater Fire “Razor’s Gone”

Take a Look Back - Dimestore of Love Episode I

Posted by Cindy on 21st December 2006

Ed. Note: I plan to bring back Dimestore of Love in January of 2007. Weekly. In fact, I’m contemplating a live show. More to come. Meantime…

Fine Line originated as a song written by Buddy Huffman and performed by Macon Greyson on their Uneasy album.

Long story short, I loved the song, there’s a personal story behind it - therefore I stole the name “The Fine Line” and used it for my own evil purposes —- using the name for my live Internet webcast show on TexasRadio1.com. Later on I started doing my own weekly live webcasts and kept the Fine Line name.

So as of today, I’m back to my Podcasting ways with a new regular Podcast named “Dimestore of Love” which is a bonus track on The Lonelies debut EP entitled…you got it…”Dimestore of Love.”

I’m just gonna play local/regional (and sometimes across the state line) music that I personally love. If you don’t like it, you can just kiss my big fat white ass.

I give you…Dimestore of Love - Episode 1…

Playlist: (I sorta went old school and played tracks from a couple of years back)
1. The Lonelies - “Dimestore of Love”
2. Eisley - “Golly Sandra”
3. Happy Bullets - “Untied”
4. jetscreamer - “Black Hole”
5. Deadman - “Ghost Story”
6. Record Hop - “Giant Babies”
7. Thrift Store Cowboys - “Days We Remember”
8. Salim Nourallah - “Model Brothers”
9. The Theater Fire - “Tease the Hangman”
10. Midlake - “Kingfish Pies”
11. Collin Herring - “Heaven Never Works Out”
12. Macon Greyson - “Fine Line”

Michael Dean Damron Moves On

Posted by Cindy on 18th December 2006

Back in the mid-to-late 90’s, I wasn’t at all interested in the local music scene. I knew nothing about local bands, live music venues or anything at all related to the “scene.” However, the first live show I ever attended was an album release show for local band Tablet. The reason for this particular outing was because my very best friend in the whole world Jim had a brother named Mike who happened to be in Tablet at the time.

I remember diggin’ the band. Then I sort of lost track of what Mike was doing musically until a few years ago. Mike moved from Dallas to Portland a long time back, then he put together a band called I Can Lick Any SonofaBitch in the House and began touring with such outfits as Slobberbone, Grand Champeen, Drive-By Truckers, Two Cow Garage, etc. I contacted Alex Steininger of In Music We Trust, and he hooked me up with a copy of Creepy Little Noises and it’s been among my favorites ever since.

The band was booked a few times in DdFW, playing to tiny crowds - typical Dallas, and it’s too bad cuz they are/were amazing live.

Sounds like Mikey has hit a similar wall as yours truly. It seems the end of 2006 has brought the need to throw out the old and start anew for several of us in the biz…

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 18, 2006

I CAN LICK ANY SONOFABITCH IN THE HOUSE CALL IT QUITS; FRONT MAN MIKE DAMRON CITES IRRECONCIABLE DIFFERENCES

Though the break-up of I Can Lick Any Sonfoabitch in the House happened a month ago today (November 18, 2006), and many of you have heard via rumors or the band¹s email blast that was prematurely sent out, I wanted to send out an official statement of the band¹s demise, complete with an explanation from front man Mike Damron (aka Michael Dean Damron).

On the night of November 18, 2006, following a show at Outlaw¹s in Portland, Oregon, Mike Damron left the stage during the middle of I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House¹s set, frustrated by poor sound and P.A. failure at the club.

After returning home, he called guitarist Jon Burbank to explain.

During his explanation, he told Burbank that the Outlaw¹s show was an eye opener and that the P.A. failure, coupled with the light crowd of only approximately sixty paid attendees, made him realize that he was not having fun in I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House and that he wanted to focus on more varied music, something he felt SOB was incapable of.

Burbank, pleading with Damron and trying to reason with him, soon ended the call, hoping Damron would sleep it off.

The following night, In Music We Trust, I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House’s label, head Alex Steininger received a message from SOB¹s manager after landing in Portland, returning home from a business trip to New York.

The message simply stated, “Alex, call me, this is Howard, something big happened with SOB last night”.

Steininger quickly called Howard Libes at Candide Entertainment, the manager for SOB, and was briefed on Saturday, November 18th, the previous night¹s incident.

He was also informed that Damron was not answering his phone.

Trying his luck at it, Steininger called Damron and left a message. The following night Damron called Steininger and expressed his feelings and viewpoint.

It was then confirmed by Steininger that Damron was ending his run with I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House, thus putting the band to rest.

Management and the band were notified and proceedings started to take place to sell off the band¹s touring van and liquidate their bank account.

“We had a great run with I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House. We toured this country many times over for nearly six years. But, after six years and four records, I felt it was starting to run its course, and I wanted to do more things musically that this band was incapable of,” comments Damron on his decision to break up the band. “I want to write more rock songs, yeah, but I also want to write country songs, more folk-y songs, and other stuff, stuff the band wasn¹t willing to do. They wanted to make all the songs rock songs and a lot of the newer stuff I was writing wasn¹t going in that direction. And I didn¹t feel like trying to force it upon the song. If the song was a rock song, I was all for it. But if it wasn¹t, it needed to not be a rock song”.

Prior to the band¹s demise, Damron and band - guitarist Jon Burbank, bassist Mole Harris, drummer Flapjack Texas, and harpist David Lipkind finished tracking what would be their forth studio full-length, “Bad Days Ahead”.

“Bad Days Ahead” will be digitally released by In Music We Trust in April 2006. Guitarist Jon Burbank is currently in the studio mixing the record.

Bassist Mole Harris has given up recording and touring, stating that the band breaking up has killed his musical drive.

Jon Burbank and Flapjack Texas continue to play in Portland rock outfit The Runaway Boys.

David Lipkind will continue to be an in-demand harpist, playing with many bands around the NW.

Mike Damron will continue on with his solo project, Michael Dean Damron. He has recently formed a band, featuring former Wipers¹ drummer Sam Henry behind the kit, and an as-of-yet confirmed bassist. The trio will play out under the name Michael Dean Damron and The Loyal Bastards.

Michael Dean Damron and The Loyal Bastards are currently working on an upcoming full-length; Damron is busy writing many songs to choose from for the as-of-yet untitled record, which will be recorded in February and come out in summer ¹07. Four songs from “Bad Days Ahead” will be on the record as well.

Look for Michael Dean Damron and The Loyal Bastards to tour in March down to SxSW and back and another tour in summer, following the release of their full-length.

Mike Damron is available for interviews.

For more information, press shots, an interview with Mike Damron, etc. please contact Alex Steininger at In Music We Trust, Inc. 503-557-9661 or alex@inmusicwetrust.com.

I hate to hear this news, I loved SOB and all the guys, but Mike is an amazingly passionate and talented songwriter, so I am looking forward to his new project. I can’t wait to see him live on stage again in March at SXSW. Meantime, you can check out some tuneage here.

Travelin’ Times

Posted by Cindy on 18th December 2006

The portion of I-35 that stretches between Dallas and San Antonio is laden with high caloric, heavy carbohydrate temptations. You’ve got your clusters of food made fast (see Wendy’s McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc.), along with your greasy spoons, truck-stop diners and the obligatory Cracker Barrels. This past trip, a beacon shone bright amongst all the other fat, grease and sugar.

In Hillsboro, just off I-35, you’ll see a large sign that reads “Healthy Highway Foods.” I was intrigued enough to pull off of the highway, park in front and wander into Nature’s Pantry. Most of the store holds your usual healthy, organic choices - sort of mini-Whole Foods-ish. In the back there’s Rosanna’s Real Foods counter where you can order up freshly made sandwiches, wraps, salads, etc. I opted for the Grilled Chicken Wrap…it was simply divine. Made on a fresh whole grain tortilla, with fresh organic greens, fresh herbs and locally naturally raised chicken. I added to that a glass of iced Green Tea and my meal was complete.

If you find yourself in Hillsboro in the future, and wanna healthy organic bite…you found one. Good stuff I tells ya!

The other thing that makes the long drive slightly less painful is when I get in range of Austin radio. I can pick up 107.1 KGSR a little south of Waco where I heard a mixture of artists including Radney Foster, The Greencards, Alejandro Escovedo, Billy Bragg, Slaid Cleaves, Billy Joe Shaver, Jerry Lee Lewis, Del Castillo, Jackopierce, Robert Earl Keen to name a few. Then at 4:30 I flipped over to 91.7 KOOP for Gary Dickerson’s Self Help Radio. I was in luck this past Friday as I sat in non-moving, bumper-to-bumper traffic, cuz Gary’s theme for the show was his top picks for 2006 and the show was downright splendid, a veritable indie-lover’s smörgåsbord.

Thankfully I could pick up KGSR the entire time I spent in San Antonio - “thankfully” being the operative word cuz thus far my critique of San Antonio radio can be summed up in one word - sucks.

On the drive back to Dallas I looked towards my CD player to keep me company with some of my faves including Sorta, Joyful Sinners, Midlake, Theater Fire, Clay Pendergrass, Johnny Lloyd Rollins and Happy Bullets.

I thought about stopping in Austin to catch a live show since I happened to have my audio equipment, but there was so—-much—traffic that I just couldn’t muster up the energy to remain patient. Next time…fer reals.

“Fiddleback Weaver” by The Theater Fire

“85 Feet and Falling” by Sorta

“Miss Sugar Pie” by Johnny Lloyd Rollins

“Balloon Maker” by Midlake

“The Dubliner” by Clay Pendergrass

“He Was Made of Snow but the Children Know How He Came to Life One Day…”

Posted by Cindy on 15th December 2006

Throughout my long life, I’ve developed numerous irrational fears…darkness…flying…heights…clowns…toilet paper on the shoe…ya know the usual stuff. This holiday season has found me with a whole new fear that leaves me quivering in the fetal position on aisle 5 at Target. The ultra terrifying sn-sn-sn-snowman.

I dunno what snapped inside my noodle to make me suddenly cower in fear every time I look out my living room window, only to see tens of thousands of those crazed blow-up yard snowmen as far as the eye can see. I dunno what primal fear took over my being whilst shopping for Christmas cards, forcing me to flee in horror at the site of that corncob pipe and that button nose and those two eyes made out of coal.

Years ago I had a rather traumatic experience while commuting as a flight attendant. The result was a ridiculously overblown fear of flying. This was a dilly of a prob since my career of choice was flight attendanting. Just to make matters worse, I was also commuting from my home base in Dallas, to my airline base of Denver. So I had to get on a plane just to get to work…on…a…plane. I can’t recall how I found my solution, but I found one in Frankie Goes to Hollywood and their 1984 debut album, Welcome to the Pleasuredome. For some strange reason beyond my comprehension, I wasn’t a’scared when I had “Pleasuredome” coursing through my ears. To this day, when I get in a panicky state, Pleasuredome and/or “Relax” comes to mind and calms my fear(s).

However, this time it turned and bit me on the arse. I took an alternate route this morning after dropping the boy-child off at school. The neighborhood was literally crawling with all sorts of yard adorned snowmen…some made from plastic…some made from wood…some made from metal….some made from fabric…and they were all staring at me! My head began to spin, my vision began to blur…”Relax” filled me ears but this time, it didn’t work…hold me

And now for something really scary:

I’m gonna go see if I can pick up another copy of this album today at Bill’s since my cassette tape is long gone - I do so dig it.
