I’m gonna be up in Dentown tomorrow night, and I’m going to have to plan a route that steers me clear of (what used to be) Fry St. Too many happy memories from there to see things in the state they are now. Progress can be painful.

Progress can be a good thing if it’s taking an old, rundown, crime-ridden area of a city and refurbishing it and making it safer for its citizens. But there’s the sad side as well. Places that we can look back on fondly give us a sense of belonging and history and when that’s torn down (good or bad) we feel detached from those memories. Take heart, progress may tear down a building or plow up a street, but it can’t remove those memories! It’s like the empty lot where you used to get together for a neighborhood baseball game. After years of being vacant someone decides it’s a good location for a 7-Eleven, and wow, the trees, the ruts, the grass are all gone – no more neighborhood ball games on that lot, but the memories of the grand slam and the day you knocked your brother’s tooth out with a wild pitch remain. Don’t lose hope Dentonites and Fry Street Rats you’ll create new memories and cherish the old ones. And while you probably hope the new development will be a flop, it won’t! Because, those folks who don’t have a sense of history on Fry Street will frequent the “new” facilities and the “old” joints that have relocated will continue on and their patrons will follow them. Good Luck Fry Street Vendors and welcome to the New! There will never be another Fry Street, so dreamers write poems and songs and stories and share them with the new generation.
