Boo…Part I

Posted by Cindy on 25th October 2006

Yeah, so I’ve been pretty lackadaisical about show suggestions, but there’s something in the works there, so don’t fret much on that subject. However, I gotta do some gushing over the Halloweeny type shows goin’ down this weekend. Some really special stuff including the following…more to come…

The Goth Ball is the largest Halloween event of its kind in Dallas. Second and third place will receive $300 and $200 respectively and non cash prizes will be awarded for creativity such as “Never Been Seen” and “Best Budget Costume”. Celebrity judges will be on hand to judge the competition.

The Goth Ball is a presentation of Arts Fighting Cancer, the non profit which produces the Lone Star Drive-in and produced the Deep Ellum Film Festival. Proceeds from the Goth Ball benefit the Cancer Relief Fund. The fund provides direct financial relief to people suffering with cancer. To date the Cancer Relief Fund has given over $60,000 in grants to individuals battling cancer.

Are You With Phillip?

Posted by Cindy on 25th October 2006

The audio interviews for QuickDFW.com have to hang around 20-minutes or less, therefore some of the good stuff still hits the cutting room floor sometimes.

Red Monroe developed a fun little travel game on their recent Canadian tour, which they revealed to us last night, and thought you’d best know about it.

I give you “Are You With Phillip?”

Dreamy Indeed

Posted by Cindy on 25th October 2006

Last night I ventured over to the splendid little dive-ish bar, British Rose Pub to meet up with Alex Kanakis, Kate Mackley and the Red Monroe boys. It was during this interview in which I got a second wind in this whole music thang.

Then I got in my car, popped in their new self-titled CD, (Red Monroe) and got about 5 more winds. I freakin’ LOVE IT!

I’m most certainly not a critic, nor am I particularly articulate in describing an album, or a performance or how to use a corkscrew. I’ll leave that to the more critical, intellectual, knowers of music like Sam and J.R. and Jonanna.

This morning I popped it back into my car stereo whilst shuttling the boy-child to his schoolin’. I still freakin’ LOVED IT!

As I sit here editing last night’s interview, I’m listening to it over and over and I freakin’ LOVE IT!

I’ll leave you here with a couple of my particularly favorite tracks. You darlings outta go to Good Records and getcherselves a copy, then make plans to hit Hailey’s on Saturday night, October 28th, for one helluva fun and FREE show with Red Monroe and another big-time Fine Line fave, Pilotdrift.

In other news, Chance informs me that:

Random, cool news friends! We just found out that our new album is one of 48 albums on the 2007 Grammy nomination ballot (we are #40). We are excited / completely confused by this due to its randomness.. (take a look at that list.. haha). We will find out over the next couple of months if a miracle happens and we are actually nominated. Fingers crossed!

Thank you all so much for your continued support. For those of you who haven’t grabbed the album yet, please do so here.

We also learned last night that another baby Red Monroe bun-in-the-oven is on its way.

I really really like those guys…as people and as musicians.

The audio (and video) interview will be up on QuickDFW.com by Friday…and PS: The moment “Blue Mountain Air” began to play, the word “dreamy” actually left my mouth…Kate was dead-on…so there.

Oliver’s in your Future

Posted by Cindy on 25th October 2006

It seems like a million years ago that Chaz and I started hearing rumblings about a Fort Worth based band called Horses. After an exhaustive search, we finally tracked the boys down and invited them in the studio for another TexasRadio1 interview. ‘Twas Jordan Richardson (formerly of Soviet Space too) who captivated us and stole the show, so to speak, during said interview.

A little later down the road, Jordan’s other divine project, Oliver Future, along with fellow bandmates Noah Lit, Josh Lit, Jesse Ingalls, Sam Raver & Mingus Lit, up and left Fort Worth and Austin respectively and took off for LaLaLand.

Oliver Future has made quite a name for themselves in Los Angeles, as well as throughout California, as well as the rest of the whole dang ol’ country.

Thing is; you really should never miss a chance to catch the band live when they blow through DdFW, or Texas for that matter. Now’s your chance love – I’ll wait while you getcher pens and pencils poised for more info…

Quick Read

Posted by Cindy on 25th October 2006

I’m so so so so behind here at The Fine Line. Ongoing illness, family emergencies, roofers and gutter-guys taking over my house, dogs barking ad nauseum, and general lackluster have all held my attention, or lack thereof, as of late. Last night’s interview was one helluva second wind. So for better or worse, I’m back.

Let’s quickly (get it?) catch-up with the doin’s over at QuickDFW.com cuz thankfully there’s lots of content still relevant…like…

Paul Salfen’s interview with the wicked hot, wicked handsome, wickedly talented Johnny Lloyd Rollins

California native-turned-Dallasite Johnny Lloyd Rollins has been compared to popular ’50s and ’60s artists, and that’s where he draws his most obvious influences. He’s a showman in the traditional sense of the word, giving entertaining perfor-mances where some of his peers are content to gaze at their feet.

After releasing low budget EP Let’s Be Poor Together last year, Rollins now looks forward to next year’s release of a recently completed full-length album, which was produced by Salim Nourallah at Pleasantry Lane Studios. He hopes to release the album “on a good label,” tour stateside and return to England, where he’s done well before, sometime next year. Here’s more from Rollins

I met Johnny like 2 or more years ago. I was doing live webcasts over at Standard & Pours and this kid comes in with more energy and enthusiasm than the SMU Cheer Squad. I fell in love instantly. He placed a self-made copy of his EP into my hot little hands and I fell in love all over again. Johnny is goin’ to the top…mark my words.

More on this video…

“The Balloon Maker video gives us in one piece of film, an unusual case of both historical and modern love.”Jason Lee

“The Balloon Maker video was shot in our home town of Denton, TX. It was a special video for us to make due to the process and collaboration with Jason. Jason came down and spent the week here, helping to develop the idea for the video, in addition to filming and directing. We wanted to do something that was completely different from the lyrical content of the song, so Tim and I created a story that was more sci-fi in nature. With the added element of Jason’s cinematography, including a black and white vignette effect, the haunting antiquity of the video evokes the feeling that you’re watching something out of a cryptic vault from somewhere in time.” – Eric Pulido

4 Whole Freakin’ Years…

Posted by Cindy on 23rd October 2006

By the great James Bland

On October 23rd, 2002 I penned my very first blog post on my former site TexasGigs.com. I had no trouble deciding on who to write about initially, cuz as far as great journalism and a real love for music, it was a no-brainer. It was just a blurb post about Tom Geddie a local writer, critic, poet, and music fan. He has (and continues to) written for Buddy Magazine for years, and currently is also a regular contributor to the FW Weekly.

I don’t recall my second post, but once I got started, everything seemed to fall into place. I know that first month was filled with The Lonelies, Jayson Bales, Bill’s Records, Eli & Young Band, Deadman, Red Tape Poetry (RIP), Envision talent, Bea, Good Records, Ed Sanders, Kinky Friedman, OhNO! (RIP), Rhett Miller, Rockzilla, KNON, Muddy Waters, Zac Crain, The Wendel Brothers, Tweed (RIP), Sorta, Sparrows, Jevette, The Observer, Trainwreck, The North Texas New Music Festival, Jon Dee Graham, Slick 57, and more.

Above was the logo I initially started with way back when. It’s by the ever-so-talented James Bland, who happens to have photographed some of the best artists/bands this great state has seen. A couple of years later, my friend Trey Carmichael presented me the gift of a wicked-awesome logo, an original Trey creation, just to be nice…no charge. Sadly, that logo slipped through my hands when I had to sell the old domain name/content/et al. Still stings a little.

So after 4 years, around 6000 blog posts, over 400 live performance recordings, prolly at least 200 interviews, and the loss of the original site to the launch of this one, here I sit…still trying to come up with fresh ideas as to how to better the “scene.” But I’m old. I’m tired. I need more help.

Sort of like raising a child, it takes a whole village to really make a difference. So at the risk of Amanda’s wrath (since I didn’t exactly clear this with her), I’m opening up The Fine Line to all of you. You got something to say? EMAIL ME and I’ll post it. I’m not talking about promoting your shows – this ain’t about self-promotion. Rather think of this as your personal soap-box when it pertains to the local/regional music scene. The Fine Line is a community, so let the community have a voice, eh?

Sample areas of interest:
CD reviews
Show Reviews
Thoughts on Venues, bands, albums
Really anything related to DdFW/Texas music and all that it entails

If you’d like to be a regular contributor, EMAIL ME and I’ll set you up.

Happy birthday to me – and to all of you I’ve grown to know and love along the way. Now let’s eat cake…

VFDanny – Speaketh

Posted by Cindy on 21st October 2006

If you are a regular comment reader ’round this joint, then you’ve most likely come across our dear friend (and Valerie’s friend, hence the name VFDanny) VFDanny. Amanda and I have been begging and sometimes bribing (it’s amazing what a few shot’ll getcha) to do some reviews for us. He sent me this in an email, and totally without his permission I’m posting it cuz I…well…cuz I can…

I was actually pretty quick to “discover” the Seattle scene back before it exploded, though shamefully late in jumping on the Nirvana bandwagon. (Even though they remain one of my all-time favorite bands to this day – and I will devour anything Nirvana- or Kurt-related without any hesitation – I dismissed them early on. The first time I heard them was the same way most folks did….hearing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on the radio. It sounded slick and commercial to me in a way I just didn’t care for. It wasn’t until a co-worker played “Breed” for me many months later before I finally got what they were about.) I was shoving Soundgarden down the throats of everyone who would listen back around 1987 or so. It was through Soundgarden that I discovered Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone and others – thanks entirely to the magical device known as “liner notes.” I could reel off the names of twenty different Seattle bands – including Nirvana, but also including Green River, the Melvins, the Fluid, Tad, Skin Yard, Bikini Kill, and a shitload of other bands I’ve forgotten since, but had never even listened to at that time – before I could have done the same with Dallas-area bands.

To this day, I’m happiest when I’m a music geek….cracking open a brand new CD and scouring all the artwork, credits and liner notes before I even listen to the thing. One of the more memorable CDs I bought last year was by a band called Kylesa from Savannah, Georgia. It was memorable because, a.) it was really fucking good, and b.) they had kick-ass liner notes. They, like many bands do, thanked other bands they had played shows or toured with, among them the much-hyped High On Fire (who are….eh, okay, but certainly not the saviors of indie hard rock that everyone was making them out to be; I’d choose Kylesa over them in a heartbeat) and dozens of others, most of whom I’ve yet to hear. There were more than a few who had names that were absolutely hilarious. I can’t begin to remember them all now, but one of them, I swear to god, was “Face Down In Shit.” (There were many others that were almost as funny.) Now, I would never play in a band called Face Down In Shit. But I’m damn sure gonna go check them out if they show up somewhere. However, that’s not the point.

During her response to all the responses she got to her original post, Cindy mentioned El Gato as being one of the bands that also played with Smile Smile that night. I didn’t even know El Gato still existed. I know I really enjoyed them the couple times I saw them play years ago, though, and have wondered what happened to them. Anyway, it all got me to thinking….With all the rumors of bickering and negativity that I hear some folks mention with regard to the Dallas music scene, is there any underlying sense of community to be found? Do any of the DFW-area bands name-check / thank their fellow scenesters or tour mates or the like anymore? I can’t honestly tell you because the most recent “local” CD I bought was probably the Deathray Davies’ last. I don’t remember any liner notes on it. But it’s such a time-honored tradition….giving a shout-out to folks sharing the same trench via the “thank you’s” at the end of the credits. And all the Seattle bands were doing that back in the day. Which absolutely created exposure for all the rest of the bands and created a cohesive “scene” that caught a lot of people’s attention. I’m proof of that.

I remember a few years ago when I was more actively connected to the Dallas music scene. And it was a scene, even if it wasn’t one that could lumped together under the umbrella of “grunge” or “alt-country” or “hardcore” or whatever. There was El Gato alongside – at various points, and at least in terms of the scene as a whole – the Deathray Davies, Chomsky, Slow Roosevelt, Tripping Daisy, Doosu, Meredith Miller, Toadies, Ugly Mus-tard, Hagfish, the Old 97s, Funland, Speedealer, Buck Jones, Baboon, Brutal Juice, Billy Goat, Vibrolux, Centro-matic, Sorta, Sparrows, Slobberbone, and many others I’m obviously forgetting. And I know I’m probably a little off on some of these as far as the chronology goes, but you get the idea.

Does that sense of community or camaraderie exist at all in Dallas music? The way Soundgarden led to Mudhoney….the way Kylesa leads to Face Down In Shit….the way Slow Roosevelt once led to Doosu? It may, I don’t know. I’m just asking.

To the River Wit’cha

Posted by Cindy on 19th October 2006

This is where you can find me on Saturday…

The Double J Hacienda & Art Ranch, overlooking the Brazos (de Dios) River and Palo Pinto Mountains, in Mineral Wells, is one of the most breathtaking spots in Texas. On October 21, 2006, the Double J, formerly the historic Seybold Guest Ranch, hosts its first annual open hacienda with musicians, artists, writers, and yoginis participating in an all-day festival. Other Texas ranches cultivate livestock; The Double J Hacienda & Art Ranch cultivates minds and bodies with music, art, storytelling, and well-being.

Walking into the Hacienda feels like a stop on a cattle drive in a mid-century Western movie. In the 1940’s the Seybold Guest Ranch operated as a dude ranch. Charles Dilbeck, a popular albeit eccentric Dallas architect, designed the guest ranch. Elmer Seybold, a nationally known sharp shooter and his wife Dorothy, an international fashion model hosted presidents and entertainers. Stories of the Reagans, Bette Davis, and John Wayne among others abound. Best-selling author John Graves, notes the “dude ranch” in his classic novel “Goodbye to a River.”

The old Guest Ranch has been rejuvenated into creative and inspirational retreat center and art ranch. The Double J Hacienda & Art Ranch provides a peaceful atmosphere to experience healthy living and enjoy music, art, and storytelling. The first annual open hacienda is an opportunity to experience something new in an historical setting.

On the 21st, the day begins with Double J Yoga with Jane at 9:30 am. Jane has been practicing yoga for over 10 years and recently opened her first yoga studio, Double J Yoga. At 10:30 am Songwriter Song Swap. At 11:30 Tori Pendergrass will set up a mini-studio for children to get their hands dirty and create an art project. Tori is the acclaimed director of Pigment School of the Arts in Dallas. At 12:30 award-winning author and sometime NPR essayist, Mike Renfro, takes the stage for some insightful storytelling. At 1:30 pm Doug and Jill Bryan play a live music set. Doug and Jill have been making music together for almost 15 years. They also write music for advertising clients, their church, and publishing. Then Jimmy Baldwin, an up-and-coming singer/songwriter plays. His current release, “Somebody’s Nobody,” can be heard on XM satellite station, X-Country, as well as radio stations around the country. Clay Pendergrass then picks up his guitar for Clay Sounds, a fusion of jazz, funk, twang, and rock ‘n roll. After an official ribbon cutting ceremony at 3:30pm sponsored by the Mineral Wells Chamber of Commerce, the day will culminate in the opening of the Double J Art Gallery with the unveiling of The Medicine Show by Brian Nadurak.

BIOGRAPHIES
Jim Baldwin

Jim is a musician in the tradition of Texas singer/songwriters. Populated by jilted lovers, fallen angels, and midnight blue skies, his songs are cinematic novellas set to soundtracks. His music transcends the country music stereotype making the jimmy sound accessible to listeners of other music genres.

Until now Jim Baldwin has worked behind the scenes. From his award-winning Motel 6 commercials with Tom Bodett, and his sun-baked beach spots for Corona beer which Jimmy Fallon parodied on Saturday Night Live, to his directorial debut honored by Wim Wenders and Dennis Hopper, Jim’s creative work has become part of the American cultural landscape. When Jim is not touring his music or making commercials he’s at the hacienda with his wife Jane and their two-year old daughter Ruby Jane.

Jane Baldwin

Jane is a writer, Yoga instructor and anthropologist. Her monthly column Jungle Jane Explains can be found in the Dallas-Plano based children’s paper, Collin County Kids. Jane teaches Yoga at the Double J Hacienda that creates a true mind, body, and spirit connection through the breath. Before becoming a mom a few years ago, she spent her free time in Belize and Guatemala as an ethnographer and archaeologist studying ancient Maya architecture. Her current projects include a children’s book about open adoption and a book of inspirational poems.

Brian Nadurak

Brian is an abstract expressionist. His in-your-face approach echoes the work of De Kooning, Pollack, Kandinski and Rauschenberg. Like theirs, Nadurak’s work is multi-dimensional, almost like looking at a 3-D chessboard, there’s a different painting on each level. He works in mixed media and exploits the use of modern and primal communication. Besides oils, pastels, chalk and blood, one finds photographs, magazine and newspaper articles as well as objects plastered to his canvases. The color palette he employs ranges from the dark and moody to bright and pleasant.

Doug & Jill Bryan

When Doug and Jill first met, Jill performed a solo acoustic act around Dallas. Doug led the popular band, Big Boss Groove, with gigs around Deep Ellum, lower Greenville Ave. and beyond. It wasn’t long before Jill had joined BBG and the two were writing and recording songs for the band’s second CD release. The well received, “Moontown Street” enjoyed frequent airplay on local radio stations such as KERA 90.1 and KDGE 94.5. Their musical collaborations grew into a romance, a marriage of more than 12 years and their seven-year-old daughter, Riley Anna. Jill has recently begun performing again with a solo act called “Cover Girl” and Doug joins her when he’s not too busy running their post production boutique, Post Op.

Posted by Cindy on 19th October 2006

The Crainiator makes donating to his campaign a win-win for all. In case you ain’t been payin’ attention, his mayoral fundraisers have been held at live music venues with some of the bestest live bands around performing.

Just in time for the holidays, you can support our future mayor, as well as give the gift of music with his upcoming compilation CD which will be available for a mere 18-bucks. The proceeds will benefit Zac’s run for mayor, and you benefit with the likes of Pleasant Grove, Polyphonic Spree’s Tim DeLaughter, Ben Kweller, Pikahsso, Rhett Miller, Peter Schmidt and His Gentlemen Scholars, Sorta, Salim Nourallah, Saboteur just to name a few. Pretty nifty, eh?

I hear-tell that most all the tracks are fresh off the press too. Me luvs me some Zac Crain. I’ll tell him in person tonight at Barley House. You outta come too.

D.O.bservations

Posted by Cindy on 19th October 2006

First of all, I’d like to thank my darlings Amanda and Reid for the bitch-fest last night. Frankly kids, I’m a tad burned-out at the moment. Things on the personal side of Cindy ain’t so great, so little set-backs and the constant negativity on the music side is wearing me down to nuthin’. I’m glad my friends allowed me to vent some last night, otherwise this week’s Dallas Observer might have shoved me right into the loony bin.

I’m convinced that once you are hired as the music editor for the Dallas Observer, you must attend and graduate from the academy of snark. When I first saw Jency and Ryan’s precious faces once inside this week’s music section, I was pleased as punch. Then I read the whole thing. What could have been a perfectly divine little review of Smile Smile’s CD release last weekend, turned into one big Lower Greenville patron bash…plus some…

In the month or so since I’ve been in Dallas, I’ve heard repeated reports on how dysfunctional the music scene is here. How everyone’s mean, and there’s infighting and backstabbing and cynicism. How bands claw at each other with the spastic, fang-bared verve of a bunch of male baboons. Could be–I haven’t been around long enough to gather the appropriate evidence, though I’ve heard a primate-like grunt here and there in the shadows.

Ironically, at last night’s meeting of the minds, we made note of the ridiculous crapola going down in the world of local booking agents/promoters. I rarely ever see bands ” claw at each other with the spastic, fang-bared verve of a bunch of male baboons,” so I’m not sure who is providing Ms. Widner with this type of information.

But, knowing that, at least anecdotally, such musical karma chaos is the norm, I can’t help but wonder how Smile Smile–aka Ryan Hamilton and Jencey Hirunrusme–gets away with being so sincere, so sweet, in the midst of all the bloodlust…

“Bloodlust” WTF? Yeah, like remember that time Doug Burr popped a cap in Scott Porter’s ass? Whadda night ’twas.

…The duo’s CD release show at the Cavern was suitable for a rainy Saturday night, low-key but tight with a low hum of energy, sultry and harmony-drenched. Smile Smile is the type of band you need to experience live to appreciate. The new disc, Blue Roses, is solid enough, a sort of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah/Mazzy Star hybrid of sing-along folk, buzzy country-leaning tunes and uptempo/downtempo swings, with brilliantly unconventional songwriting and smart harmonies anchoring the whole deal…

Ms. Widner gave Smile Smile about a 2 paragraph (plus some change) glowing review which I, for one, was glad to read. The rest of the article just talks about how dangerous, drunk and annoying her visit was on Lower Greenville…too bad too cuz for those out there who aren’t yet Smile Smile fans, the short blurb about them might get lost in all the negativity.

Seriously, you guys know I’m all about supporting the “scene” and trying to be as positive as I can and always attempting to kiss the local media’s ass, but this gal is workin’ my last nerve. The next column penned by our new music editor basically takes shots at some international bands touring through DFW this week/weekend, and goes a step further to ridicule the fans who might care enough to attend. I shan’t clutter up this blog with blockquotes of bash, so just go here if you wanna read it.

Although she got a lot of criticism during her stint as the Dallas Observer music editor, Sarah Hepola came into the position with a positive outlook and a let’s shake things up for the better attitude. I hope Jonanna Widner can look past all the gossip, rumor and “dysfunction” in order to clearly see some of the good things that make up our local music scene. Or even better, perhaps rather than pointing out all the frailties and negative aspects plaguing the scene, offer-up some of her own ideas that might make it better..

Go here for the rest of this week’s music section. I think I’m just gonna flip over to see what Andrea’s been up to this week.

You Too Can Be a Rock Star – Or At Least You Can Point and Laugh

Posted by Cindy on 18th October 2006

Rock Star Karaoke appropriates at the The Barley House tonight kiddies, 10/18, with new a new song, new judges, and higher stakes.

This is one you don’t want to miss. What’s at stake? A chance to win $300* (and $150 and $75 “certificates of inebriation” for 2nd & 3rd places respectively).

Tonight is the last chance you’ll have to compete for a slot in the 10/25 October Finals. The 4 top scoring rockers from our distinguished judging panel will join The Angela (2nd, 10/11), Law (1st, 10/4), Marcus (2nd, 10/4), Marcus (1st, 10/11), Nuke (3rd, 10/4) and Toni (3rd, 10/11) when the competition gets really stiff (see the RSK Blog for all the dirty details). That’s right, tonight’s 4th place winner will be the “wild card”, so your odds have improved by some meaningful percentage. [we think it's a 10% improvements, but we wouldn't be rock'n'rollers if we were good at math]. As they say, you can’t win if you don’t play.

And our judges…well that’s a special surprise. It WAS going to be the fellas from dconstruction.org, Robert Jenkins and Lindsay Graham. And there WAS going to be some kind of blogcast associated with it. But something happened…no biggie, we thought the finals would be better to record anyway…maybe Cindy and Amanda with The Fine Line do it on 10/25 or some other time. (ED. NOTE: We Can!)

But Robert is a man with a passion to judge, and this local ambulance-chaser has sworn himself to fielding a panel of cool fellow evaluators. At press time, it looks like Robert will be judging with his fellow Summerbreak Records colleague (and Barley House co-owner) Richard Winfield. We expect them to be joined by one of the stars from their cool indie label, and it looks like they’re gonna provide a bunch of Summerbreak swag for our 4th place winner.

But we’re gonna let you in on a little secret based on recent experience: if you play your cards right, and get him drunk enough, you may well be able to get Robert to offer you some kind of little record contract…we know from personal experience. Whether or not he’ll remember the offer is a different story. Still, shouldn’t this get a few more of our musician buddies up on stage?

Regardless, maybe we can get Robert & Richard to release a record of Rock Star Karaoke’s greatest, either using the stuff that our friend Colin Boyd recorded at the now-defunct GBG, or recording new stuff. We think we’d enjoy watching Robert slug through the intellectual property issues associated with that!

Contestants are scored by the judges on 3 criteria: Singing ability, stage presence, and crowd response. Any 2 of these can obviously outweigh a weakness in the other. So if you’re not a great singer, just bring lots of people and bring your best moves and/or wardrobe. If you can’t bring so many friends, make sure you pick a song that you can OWN and maybe wear something that shows off your salient features and signature moves.

Nightly Schedule (all times are Rock ‘n’ Roll Time zone, e.g. get there and start drinking early!
10:15-11:00ish – Open Karaoke – 10-15 singers
11:30-12:15ish – CONTEST – 10 contestants bring it!
12:45-1:30ish – Open Karaoke – Victory laps, drunk SMU kiddies 10-15 singers

The weekly prizes are nearly the same. The 4th place winner will win a Summerbreak Swag Pack and a place on the 10/25 October Finals slate. 3rd place: A cool RSK T-Shirt, and a slot in the October Finals on Wednesday, 10/25
2nd place: An RSK T-shirt AND a Barley House T-Shirt, and a slot in the 10/25 October Finals
1st place: Both T-shirts, and a slot in the October Finals

We’ve added another new song to the list. The Pixies’ Here Comes Your Man. We’re really eager and curious to see who our guinea pig will be this week. Click here for lyrics and mp3′s of all the songs.

Also, expect a return appearance of Hardline producer, Sorta thumper, former RSK contest judge, and aspiring hair model Danny Paul Balis. He promised us that if we really learned the Foo Fighters’ Monkey Wrench, he’d learn it too and sing it. We can’t wait…this dude OWNS everything he sings.

No word yet on whether hottie cousins Mel and Cortney will be there as our skanky (their word, not ours) vs. sweet go-go dancers, but we have high hopes. Send ‘em a note an let ‘em know how much we need them to counter the inevitable Nabb-induced male nudity.

And we think we convinced our very own RSK dogfodder Howard to come dust off a couple of tunes with us.

Stay tuned for an update on October Finals. The best way to do that, of course, is to subscribe to the RSK Blog. And see ya Wednesday night at The Barley House!

*Three-hundred-fucking-cash-god-damned-dollars, which is our new mantra–and oughta be yours!

“Everybody is Easy”

Posted by Cindy on 18th October 2006

The Burden Brothers went to Club Dada on Monday. I was there with the audio recorder. Alex was there with the video camera. We talked about the new album, upcoming shows, the local scene and Rizzo’s side project as a Scott Baio look-alike. You’ll have to wait to see/hear it on QuickDFW.com in the coming days.

Ashleyisms

Posted by Cindy on 18th October 2006

My girl-child is waaaaaaaaay cooler and hipper than I am when it comes to good music. Hell, she’s the one who told me about Chris’ site way back. I had planned on attending the Good Records in-store on Monday with Astronautalis, Electric President & Alias & Tarsier, but the boy-child got sick, so home I stayed. However, my darling daughter Ashley went cuz she “like loves Electric President.” God love her.

Anyhoo, I told her to be sure and catch the Astronautalis set cuz that boy is awesome and really gives it all when performing. (note: has WSJR ever even seen/heard Astronautalis? …and I quote, Well, I don’t really like white boy emo…” Um, honey, he ain’t no emo).

The point of this drivel is that she actually came home, found me and thanked me for hippin’ her to Astro…thanked me and added that “he’s really amazing, I can’t wait to see him again live.” You know what this means, right? Once. Just once. I wasn’t so “lame”…keep it down kids and let me bask in this for a moment…
