Saturday Oct 28, 2006 6:00 PM
On Saturday, October 28, 2006, Canvas will open its doors to a a celebration of Halloween and “El Dia de los Muertos,” a professionally juried exhibition with submissions by professional and emerging artists from around the country. The gallery is located across from Fair Park, at 3809 Parry Ave, Suite 313.
This special show will feature artwork in all media containing thematic elements and interpretations of “El Dia de los Muertos,” or “The Day of the Dead.” The first place winner will receive a solo exhibition and opening party at Canvas.
“El Dia de los Muertos” is a holiday celebrated on November 1 (All Saints Day) and November 2 (All Souls Day). Although it is celebrated in cultures across the globe, this celebration is especially prevalent in Mexico where it is viewed as a public holiday. Although the subject matter is often thought of as morbid, this holiday is celebrated joyfully. The mood of “The Day of the Dead” is light, and focuses on celebrating and honoring the lives of the deceased.
Canvas’ esteemed panel of judges will include fine art photographer Richard Sexton, Assistant Director of the Stephen Cohen Gallery in Los Angeles, California, Rick Perez, and Director of the A Gallery for Fine Photography in New Orleans, Edward R. Hbert. Visitors are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes (although not required.) Drinks will be served. Live music will be provided by Deepmoz.
Canvas Art Gallery is located in the historic Goodyear Building in the artistic and thriving neighborhood of Exposition Park. Reflecting its surroundings, Canvas is an up-and-coming venue for professional and emerging artists to display their work.
