I love Good Records in-stores.

I always run into people I adore…

…there are lots of pretty pretty lights…

…I always get yet another famous photo of the back of Kris Youmans…

…and the folks at Good Records never disappoint me when introducing a new band…
Prior to heading to Good Records on Saturday, I did a little snoopin’ around to see what I could find out about this Oklahoma band coming in-store to perform live. After hearing just a few tracks, I felt a sense of excitement. Then of course CJ immediately got me excited with his enthusiasm for the band.
Colour Music carefully backed their trailer towards the Good Records front door and began to load in. They looked like nice enough guys. Musician-types and all that, ya know?
A little later the store seemed to be crawling with guys in white coats. I thought for certain I’d been found-out and they had finally tracked me down in order to cart me off the the funny farm. Instead, green-brain-on-the-outside-topped Ryan roamed the store offering up “medicine” (see Tootsie Rolls and bubble gum) to any and all that ails-ya, while the rest of the band, in their white coats, set up on stage.
It’s really too bad most of the fans took off shortly after Pink Nasty performed. The performance by Colour Music was perhaps one of the best and most fun I’ve seen in quite sometime. My damn camera battery died shortly after they started, which sucks cuz they are both a sight and sound to behold.
You’ll have to deal with audio only this time around – but I’ll be front-and-center for the next time they perform in DdFW…and the next…and the next…

Pink Nasty Live at Good Records
Pink Nasty never disappoints. Everytime I see the girl live, I alway come away loving her angelic voice and superb songwriting.
Sara performed live at Good Record this past Saturday, October 28th, and I had cameras and audio equipment. Above she performs “Mold the Gold” from her recently released album (video)….and yes, that’s the back of the incomparable Sam Machkovech front-and-center for the performance.
Below is her performance in full (audio). Please enjoy…

Be sure and tune in tonight (and every Saturday night) for DJ Eddie D’s Knowledge Dropped Lessons Taught II
5:00 – 7:00 PM
DJ EZ Eddie D has cultivated a career as a DJ, remixer and producer for over 24 years. Being the closest thing to a hip-hop historian that Dallas has ever known, he has worked with the early pioneers as well as many of the current up and comers in the Dallas hip-hop scene. From his early days growing up in Finneytown(a mostly caucasion suburb in Cincinnati, Oh.) to his 23 years in dallas it’s no surprise to find his influences are all over the musical map. With a collction containing everthing from R&B to Classic Rock, Funk to Retro and Blues to Hip-Hop his studio is the Mecca record collectors dream of.
His main focus today is fusing all of these genres with hip-hop beats creating a distinctive sound all his own. In 1982, Dallas DJ The Master Mixer taught Eddie how to blend records and also introduced him to the radio station KNON 89.3 “The Voice of the People”. He interned and moved his way up the ranks, working with DJ Cisco Soul & the Party Patrol and Nippy Jones of the “Fresh & Freaky Friday Show”(later KKDA). Nippy helped groom him for his own time slot. In 1987 station manager Craig Taylor gave him that chance with his first show airing Thursday nights 9-11. The show moved a few times finally landing on Saturdays 5-7pm where you can still tune in weekly for “Knowledge Dropped-Lessons Taught(Vol.2)”. It is the only source Dallas has for true underground hip-hop and being a public radio station is a perfect forum for his philosophies on politics, religion, racism and social responsibility…
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Stick around tonight, and every Saturday night, for the Dirty South Block Party from 10 PM until Midnight.
The krunkest radio show in the south hosted by Bobo Luchiano, DJ Fish, DJ Drop, Pikahssablanca, David and Kita Khat on KNON 89.3 FM Every Saturday night from 10pm to 12am Call the request line 214.637.1893

QuickDFW.com finds an interview with The Secret Machines sandwiched between the pages, conducted by Paul Salfen…
Although the members of the Secret Machines came together in Dallas, they were never really a Dallas band with that particular name. They had played in UFOFU, Captain Audio, Comet and When Babies Eat Pennies.
“That’s Dallas for you” drummer Josh Garza explains. “It’s such a small scene, and everybody plays on everybody’s records.”
Garza and the Curtis brothers – bassist Brandon and guitarist Ben – eventually decided on their name after playing a show as the Secret Machines of Captain Audio. Frustrated by the local scene, they packed up and moved to New York in 2000, where they eventually landed a deal with Warner Bros. Records.
They’re currently on tour promoting Ten Silver Drops with an innovative in-the-round stage setup – a risky endeavor both financially and logistically. Here’s more from Garza…

Skin did it right with…who else…P.P.T. It’s greatness, you gotta listen. – Pikahsso interviews Picnic (rap-style) – Skin spins his favorite tune from Tres Monos in Love – Tahiti interviews Pikahsso who was hopped-up on helium – PPT raps back at Lazer who recently dissed the guys on The Ticket – Picnic interviews Tahiti in what sounds like the North Pole, but it’s really Fort Worth and Tahiti admits he hates Darth Vader.

One of my all-time all-time all-time loves is a’comin’ to Good Records tomorrow and you can betcher sweet patootie I’ll be there armed with audio/video equipment.
Das’ right kiddies, come on over to Good Records tomorrow at 3 PM to getcher Pink Nasty on. Pink Nasty aka Sara Beck shall perform tunes from her new album, Mold the Gold.
Pink Nasty has just completed her second album, the neurotic pop rock masterpiece Mold the Gold–recorded in Shelbyville, Kentucky by Paul Oldham and Steve Squire in Kansas and Texas. The record was written by Pink and her brother Black Nasty and is really, really great. ‘Mold the Gold’ is a collection of thirteen off-beat, melodic jams that include the epic suburban-apathy-under-the-looming-threat-of-a-masturbating-serial-killer ballad “BTK Blues”, the stunningly dramatic opener “I Don’t Know” (complete with reggae breakdown and five Pink Nastys yelping “by by by bye bye bye bye!”), the silly uptempo bubblegum pop of “Take it Back”, the ethereal folk beauty of “Golden Smoke”, the post coital soul dirge of “Danny”, the zippy Spoon rip off “Dirty Soap”, the bombastically spooky title track and the over-the-top album closer “Don’t Ever Change”, her power duet with Bonnie Prince Billy that will no doubt replace “The Time of My Life” as one of musics most enduring ballads. Purchase this seminal LP at www.pinknasty.net.
Bonus track: Colour Music will also perform at 4 PM…I’m…so…happy…

Man this weekend is chock full of musical creamy goodness. Take tonight for example, the Black Forest Theater welcomes Nayrok Udab back from her year+ hiatus. Final Friday is also moving to the Black Forest Theater tonight in celebration…
Nayrok Udab is, in a word, explosive. This Dallas native has anointed the music world with a new genre of music. She calls it Hoodrok. What is Hoodrok you ask? Hoodrok, is a combination of rock and hip-hop with a funk twist. Nayrok has blessed many stages in places such as Atlanta, DC, New York, Canada and Japan. She has opened up for many platinum artists such as Musiq Soulchild, Nikka Costa, Common, Erykah Badu as well as Prince. You name it, Nayrok’s done it! Nayrok has also been in four nationally distributed music videos with a National GAP ad that has been seen on billboards all over the world.
Born and raised in South Dallas, TX; Koryan Wright is the middle child of Kolleen Queenie Wright. As evidence of being the middle child Ko-Ko, as family members commonly call her, has always defied what is normal. Her birth name (Koryan) spelled backwards is Nayrok. The name itself further corroborates the notion that she is destined to rule the World of Rock! Udab is the flipside of her Platinum, Grammy-Award winning older sibling. Although the resemblance is unmistakable; their music styles are far from related.
Nayroks initial influence in music was planted by her mothers Saturday morning play list of Minnie Ripperton, Denise Williams and Stevie Wonder to name a few. The first 45 record that she had her mother purchase was, Minute by Minute by The Doobie Brothers. Nayrok also admits being fascinated by the album cover Nightclubbing by Grace Jones, which ironically indicated an unusual spawn of eclectic originality uncharacteristic of a child her age.
From there on she began to enjoy artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Hall and Oates, The Eurhythmics, and Aerosmith. Nayrok was a member of her church choir and the Dallas renowned Maureen F. Bailey Concert Choir. Nayroks love of hip-hop and performing flourished when she and her sister formed a rap group called, Susta MCs. They performed all over the Metroplex and were the hottest sister group in Dallas.
It was from this element of showmanship that the Nayrok era evolved. Equipped with a solid national buzz, Nayroks stage show is a force of free energy personified. On stage she is uncharacteristically the total opposite of her otherwise demure person. She performs with a four-piece band that is thought by many to be one of the best bands in Dallas. She sings from a music perspective inspired by years of love-hate relationships, triumphs and shortcomings. A car accident in 1999 caused by a drunken driver in Houston left Nayrok with two severely broken legs and two years of rehabilitation. This life-altering event briefly snatched some physical capabilities but strengthened her mentally and musically. It forged a natural element of music uncharted in the industry. The accident also birthed her personal motto. Nayrok ends every show with the cherished phrase to, Live Hard, Love Hard, and Rok Harder! After hearing this genius femme-beacon of Rock Hip Hop and Funk fusion, forgetting Nayrok will be the hardest.
This delicious piece of pie just gets sweeter-n-sweeter with the addition of Rubba Rode, Dow Jonez and PPT also performing!

I can’t imagine how or why former Dallasites The Secret Machines landed their Dallas gig at Lizard Lounge, cuz I thought that joint was like a dance club with a bass beat so hard and loud, you can feel it in your innards. During my involvement in the local music biz, I’ve come across and befriended several immensely talented photographers. Hal Samples,, James Bland, Cabe Booth, Kate Mackley, have all impressed me with their rock star pics.
However, one photographer in particular continues to wow me with every shot…one Allison V. Smith.
Allison has a lengthy, and quite impressive resume that includes work for the Dallas Morning News, Star Telelgram, Denton Record Chronicle, Los Angeles Times just to name a few. She has also taken home awards such as the Press Club of Dallas Katie Award, and can lay claim to such clients as the Susan B. Komen Foundation, Esquire Magazine, Us Weekly, D Magazine, Roger & Caroline Horchow, Ken Knight, Robert Bellamy and many more prestigous A.V.S. photo lovers.
You really should ink in a time to head over to Barry Whistler Gallery to check out Allison’s fantastic exhibit, Giant, that offers us a glimpse into her adventures in Marfa, Texas. In fact, I might do just that this afternoon… Details: – Barry Whistler Gallery – Open Daily Noon until 5:00 PM – Giant Runs Through November 25th – Check out the Installation Photos

That’s hotter-n-hell lead singer Aaron Closson pictured above in Los Angeles while shooting the “Deaf Ears” video. The video was shot by Commondeer who have done videos for The Sounds, Bloc Party, Norah Jones. The Faint and many more.
While shooting in L.A., the band also found time to sign with Nikki Wheeler of United Talent Agency (Placebo, Blur, Shiny Toy Guns, Lilly Allen, etc.).
The Hourly Radio will return to DdFW on November 17th to perform a show at Wreck Room with good-fella-band Black Tie Dynasty.
