How Sweet It Is…

Posted by Cindy on 21st September 2006

Speaking of the splendid Pinebox Serenade, I just took note of a fantabulous show this Saturday, September 23rd Friday, September 22nd at Dan’s Silverleaf in Denton. Dunno what time. Dunno how much. Perhaps one of the fine gents in Pinebox Serenade or Spitfire Tumbleweeds or 100 Damned Guns will hip us to the specifics. A show this good just might tempt me outta my cave…

UPDATE: Scott says they’ll start around 10ish Weeds/Guns/Pinebox in that order. Prolly 5-measly-bucks.

Meantime enjoy these tunes as much as I do…

“Streets of Righteousness” by Pinebox Serenade

“Put Me in the Ground” by 100 Damned Guns”

“Dead Skunk” by Spitfire Tumbleweeds

NOTE: Hipcast (holds our audio/video) has been screwy all day, so if the above tunes don’t work, just wait a few and try, try again.

Off Topic One Minute Bitch

Posted by Cindy on 21st September 2006

So I’ve got this day job, over on the side of town where 16-year olds drive BMW’s and neighborhoods are demolished in order to make room for a parking garage for said 16-year olds to park.

Many, many, many days, the polished, slim, well-dressed mommies will enter the day job doors with their “adorable” tykes in tow, only to let the little supercilious darlings roam the store freely as if it were a big cage of balls after a tasty Happy Meal.

One such afternoon, after helping a mommy measure a large mirror, I rounded the corner of the main desk only to find her little mop-top-turd banging on my laptop screen with a large heavy pig statue he had picked up in the store. Mommy said, “now Parker, be careful with the lady’s computer.” Be careful??? How’s about getcher grimy little mitts off the lady’s computer and since you cracked the screen, sitcherass down while I write this lady a check to cover the broken screen….yeah..right.

So I took my broked-baby over to CompUSA this morning and scared the crap outta the tech when I literally SCREAMED when he quoted me $960.00…NINE HUNDRED AND SIXTY DOLLARS! The damn laptop didn’t even cost that much…sigh…dammit…

…Somebody quick, throw me a benefit concert and post haste, this crack has now become more crack less screen…dammit….

Don Walser

Posted by Cindy on 21st September 2006

Crap. Don Walser passed away yesterday after years of health problems. In case you don’t know…

Country music is one of the most popular and commercially successful forms of music in the world. Ironically, it is this same commercial success and intense marketing spotlight on the contemporary that has obscured the music’s roots in the small towns and rural regions of the American heartland. Cowboy song, popularized on the silver screen in the 1930s and 1940s, and Texan country swing modeled after Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys were two essential ingredients in the evolution of country music.

For veteran Texas country musicians who preferred to “stay home” rather than to follow Nashville’s faddish lead, Texas country roots music is as alive and contemporary as it was in its commercial heyday.

Don Walser was born in 1934 in the small Texas Panhandle town of Brownfield and grew up in nearby Lamesa. His mother died when he was 11, and his father worked nights as a cotton mill superintendent. To fill the solitude of the daylight hours, he listened to the music of West Texas plains on the radio and watched the early cowboy crooners at the movie theater. He began to sing as a young boy, learning the songs, style, and yodeling skills of his musical models.

He joined the National Guard at 15 (claiming he was 17), married his wife Pat at 17, and raised a family of four children. Instead of leaving West Texas to pursue his musical career on the road or in Nashville, he stayed home to devote himself to his family, playing clubs, VFW halls, and honkytonks at night and on the weekends. After 45 years with the National Guard as a mechanic, a superintendent, and an auditor, he retired.

He was one helluva musician and a really great man. RIP my friend.

NPR’s World Cafe featured my never-coming-back-across-the-pond darlings, Midlake yesterday. If’n ya missed it, you can still take a listen cuz dat der is da beauty of da Internet.

Where the hell did Bobby Ewing go?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I love Lindsay Graham. There. I said it. Sure there is some lust in the mix, but hey, I’m a dirty old woman. Although the rooms over dconstruction have been eerily quiet over the last few months, I still go there regularly in hopes that either Robert or Lindsay or both will toss me a bone.

Leave it to good ol’ J.R. to throw open the doors and lure Lindsay back into the blogosphere…

…Like it or not (and I often don’t), We Shot JR is the vibrant, throbbing, irreverent-yet-relevant source for discussion of local music. The tastes run, uh, eclectic and the discourse is often rancid, foul-mouthed, ego-fueled puffery. Reading the strings of comments is commonly painful, and I’ve more than once shut down my browser, mid-comment, in disgust. Despite the caustic tone, misguided derision and in general poor behavior of the commenters (or perhaps goaded on by them), the site itself – the authors of the posts – keeps up daily with a scene that is underrepresented, underappreciated and so fickle and mercurial that we lost pace back in February…

…heh…

What Lindsay is trying to say is, he luv J.R. Actually, so much so that he helped the WSJR boys(?) put together one helluva decent mix-CD that you can, not only download fer free, but they are making promises about free distribution at Good Records sometime soon.

You can Click here to download Projection and you can go here to check out the playlist and read some words by J.R.

BandSiteLive.com

Posted by Cindy on 19th September 2006

I started out my little journey into the bowels of the local music scene by booking for The Lonelies 6-years ago. Subsequently that led to booking for venues and other bands. Because I actually do get how this music thing works, I’ve become somewhat increasingly concerned that bands and artists these days are depending solely on MySpace, or even worse, websites that build a page for them with no hands-on control of said page. MySpace and local music sites are tools…they should be used in addition to an official band website…at least in my opinion.

So when my long-time friend and very supportive music scenester launched BandSiteLive.com, and at such an affordable price…well I have high hopes that you musicians will consider using this excellent and affordable service.

BandSiteLive.com officially launched its website creation and management service today which was established to help bands and other musical groups quickly and inexpensively establish their presence on the Web.

“As a website developer and a highly active member of the music community, I recognized that independent artists typically don’t have the budgets for a website with the necessary features to stay connected with their fans. So, we wanted to create an online tool that allowed any independent musician to get noticed, distribute their latest music, and stay connected in an increasingly competitive industry,” said Reagan Judd, Co-Founder of BandSiteLive.com.

For those musical groups who already have sites, transitioning to BandSiteLive.com can help them stay in better contact with their fans and leverage the latest online technologies to introduce their latest releases to the music community quickly and efficiently.

The service, which has an introductory 2-week free trial period, starts at $20/mo and comes with features that include:

~Pre-designed templates

~Email list management

~Email marketing engine

~Mp3 jukebox

~Photo gallery manager

~Message board

~Traffic stats and measurements

~Plus many other features to make managing a site quick and easy

“It’s a no-brainer,” said Trey Carmichael, member of the Dallas-based band Sorta. “The BandSiteLive.com features would have cost us thousands to build using an independent web developer. Instead, we were up and running in a day for just $20.”

About BandSiteLive.com

BandSiteLive.com, a web property owned by Dragonfly Solutions, LLC, was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in Dallas, TX. BandSiteLive.com is a leading provider of affordable website solutions to bands and solo artists who are striving to take advantage of the growing importance of the Web in their ability to inform and stay connected with their fans.

For additional information, please contact Reagan Judd, BandSiteLive.com Co-Founder, at (469) 223-5746 or by email at reagan@bandsitelive.com. Additional information can be found online by visiting http://www.bandsitelive.com.

Just a few local (and beyond) bands utilizing this great service/product:
JJ & the Rogues
Sorta
Creede Williams
American Royal
Collin Herring
Travis Hopper
Airline
Clay Pendergrass
Jenn Nabb
Mission to the Sea

You get about 30-seconds (1 minute if you are lucky) to get bookers, promoters, radio producers, et all to pay attention to your band and/or your music. Why not add a great, easy to navigate, chock full of interesting features, inexpensive website to your promotional endeavors? I know I sound like a commercial, but I really believe in what Reagan and his partners have created and I’m plumb sick of MySpace working about 1/4 the time.

Check it out.

On the Gimarc

Posted by Cindy on 19th September 2006

I love George Gimarc. While doing a show on TexasRadio1 I tried to get the man on for an interview. While doing my former blog I tried to get the guy to talk to me. No dice. And why should he? I’m just an old gal with a blog…as well as an annoyingly gushy giddy fan of the man since the late 70′s.

Mista “Fingers of Fury” hisownself has loads of great news about the resurfacing of Gimarc…

…If Gimarc needs a re-introduction at this late date, that is because for the last six years or so he has been sequestered away once more reinventing himself and, he hopes, reinventing radio in the process. Finally, after all that time and after having spent “tens of thousands of dollars,” he is prepared to debut his latest project–which, should it take off, could well be the biggest thing to hit the medium since the anything-goes Jack format, since satellite radio, since the proliferation of sports talk…since electricity itself. OK, not so much the latter. Still, it could be a very big deal. What is it? After the jump.

If you go here, you will find a Web site for something called “Radio SASS.” The SASS stands for “Short Attention Span System,” because no song in Gimarc’s new format will last longer than two minutes–no, not even “Stairway to Heaven.” Imagine your favorite song reduced to verse-chorus-verse-adios. No dickin’-around guitar solos. No wankin’-off drum solos. No nothing except the meat of the song, shorn of the gristle. In and out. Wham and bam.

There’s a longer explanation here, but as Gimarc tells it, he hit upon the idea in 2000 when he was driving with a friend, who kept switching stations in the middle of songs he actually liked. Gimarc asked his buddy why he was punching out: Did he hate the song? Was he tired of it? No, said the pal. He just wanted to find out what else was on…

Read Robert.

This is pretty interesting stuff my friends. Leave it to Gimarc to launch something new and fresh…just like the old days, eh?

…um….George…call me?

Save the Scene Meets This Eve

Posted by Cindy on 18th September 2006

Save the Scene meets tonight, Monday, September 18th, at Club Twist located at 2826 Elm in Deep Ellum…oh man…I used to do a lotta hangin’ at the old 2826…sigh…Misty water-colored memories… 9 PM

Save the Scene is blend of Deep Ellum Residents, Business Owners, Employees, Musicians, Artists, and Friends of Deep Ellum that have come together to rejuvenate our neighborhood. As the neighborhood has begun to quiet down in relation to crime, Save the Scene has been developed in order to assist in reviving our great neighborhood. We are work closely with the Deep Ellum Residents Council, Deep Ellum Association and the City Council. We are always looking for new people to get involved! Our first meeting at the Darkside Lounge was host to over 30 people and received positive reviews from the Dallas Observer. The second meeting was host to over 50 people and we anticipate an even larger crowds as we progress. Our meetings are rotated each Monday in the Deep Ellum district to promote exposure to area businesses and explore what the area has to offer. The Save the Scene meetings are not a public forum for the problems that face Deep Ellum, or a place to rant about them. Save the Scene is a positive organization headed towards issues that we can tackle on our own through fund raising and volunteer efforts as well as event planning. We strive to provide organized meetings with a democratic voting platform on the agenda.
