Them That Dare
Artwork by:
Steve Cruz, Brian Jones, Steven Miller, Brian Scott, Susan Whitmer

Them That Dare doesnt necessarily challenge the aesthetic order of things so much as describes artists intent on exploring their own divergent viewpoints. These five artists arent unaware of contemporary issues or the incessant chatter of critiques, but each of them finds their own particular bent more unfashionably compelling.

This disparity of expression, however, doesnt mean that there isnt any commonality among them. Probably the most telling quality that they all share is humor. From sly and sweet to rude and wicked, this is work dedicated not to somberness but to serious fun. The dare that unites their work is that these artists sidestep insular esoteric posturing in favor of appearing sensuously accessible. Them That Dare presents five artists who are practiced explorers in their own peculiar realities.

Steve Cruz is a chronic artist whose work has infected many high quality gallery spaces. His new work is a visually saturating combination of pattern and sin. He is also ringmaster and director of Mighty Fine Arts gallery in Oak Cliff.

Brian Scott and Brian Jones have collaborated on work together as Chuck and George, most notably at Gray Matters gallery in Dallas. For this show, they will be separate but equal. Joness skydiving, corpulent lewd boys will be offset by Scotts art historical monkey paintings.

Steven Millers tight architecture is scenic and poetic, but there is always something sinister implied on the margins. His jewel-like reveries are contrasted with ceramic, vaguely self-portrait-like heads meant to describe all aspects of the artist. He also shows at Conduit Gallery in Dallas.

Susan Whitmers paintings come from the minutia of life and dreams. She plays with the scale of ideas, obsessing on objects or words and phrases, crossing them out and painting another layer of meaning over them. Susan has exhibited at the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art, 500X Gallery, and Mighty Fine Arts
