Tania Tells It
Posted by Cindy on September 8th, 2006

My darling Tania had a busy, busy, busy night last night. Again, proof that there are damn great bands and goin’s on in Deep Ellum….all within walking distance….check it…
one night in the life of …
club dada :: 9 pm
got a killer parking slot and camille from fishing for comets put an hours
worth in the meter for me while i plied the lovely teresa for quarters. on the way in,
i ran into reggie rueffer who told me, much to my dismay, that he had just finished playing with david garza. thankfully, i will get to check it out next week, as he will be a part of davids residency group.walked in and hung out with the observer crew for a short spell
merritt and andrea in full effect amanda looking as lovely as usual. after getting a text message alerting me to come see the deathray davies and hourly radio playing atgypsy tea room :: 9:45 pm
i decided to take a walk down elm. i arrived at the perfect moment, a girl i had met at previous shows remembered me and gave me her spare ticket.
ran into marley and barry whistler sadly, i just missed seeing marleys new band. i catch a couple of deathray tunes before i spied kate mackley.
still in the walkabout mode, i offered to carry her bag down the street toclub clearviews rooftop deck :: 10:15 pm
i had been invited to the show by a friend, but it had totally escaped my memory. after climbing what seemed like 18 flights,
we got to the rooftop party. i had forgotten how pretty the view is from up there and noticed they had added a wooden trellis overhead to string colorful lights and cans for the stage area.the first band played a jimi hendrix-esque set, i think they were called the cool ones, but i can’t be certain. the lead singer energetically writhed and hopped around, to the delight of the young and dancing crowd. i could not stop laughing at the lead singers antics, ‘til i noticed no one else was as amused as i was. we shot the affable dj quinn, and headed back down to
club dada :: 11:07 pm
for a little sorta. i spied pete from the hochimen and he informed me he was also playing a midnight show with clay and the electric cowboys at
the darkside lounge :: 11:30 pm
so i opt walk over to check out their set. i sat outside waiting for them to start when i noticed karaoke was happening across the street. my urge to sing is overwhelmed me, so i ran over to
july alley :: 11:45 pm
due to all the killer shows all over elm street, july alley was not as hopping as it usually gets around that time.
i have to tell you, i have wanted to keep thursdays at july alley my little secret. the people-watching is ripe, the crowd really gets into singing metal or hip hop songs i have never heard before and the wait time is super short.
i turn out ELOs turn to stone to positive reaction, and choose a janis joplin song i hadn’t heard in a long time as my second.
it was an iffy selection and i bombed so badly, the dj let me do my third one instead.
rhett from the happy bullets sauntered with adam, the new bartender at the fallout lounge as i changed tracks.
rob the heartthrob also managed to swing by while i dazzled the sparse crowd with bandages by hot hot heat.
i was ready to go back to the darkside, but adam convinced me to sing one more. so i did, and headed back tothe darkside lounge :: 12:15
i happily watched the set perched conveniently on a well placed chair by the stage and stayed for a few songs before i remembered that eaton lake tonics were about to go on at
club dada :: 12:45
got there just in time to catch a large part of their set. these boys have to be my highlight of the evening for sure. their songs are poppy, tight and have the intensity befitting a bigger band than just a 3 piece.
caught up a bit with dave monsey (recently toured with fiona apple) and ward of sorta we talked about music, goblins, and gus black. dave is in talks with the talented mr. black to work on future projects, and i could not be more excited. gus put out one of my favorite cds back in ‘99 word of mouth parade which contained the heartstring puller “floodlights”. read more here and scroll down to see the video! www.gusmusic.com
at 2:30, it was well past time to depart, so i hopped in my car and headed home.
