Neil Youngsters Hit the Stage This Eve

Posted by Cindy on 23rd August 2006

Local musician Marc Solomon created a loverly little place called Zounds Sounds, which teaches and showcases our young, budding future rockstars. Sarah Hepola penned a piece for the Dallas Observer

The kids who take music lessons from Marc Solomon don’t have recitals. They have concerts. Recitals require stiff suits and taffeta dresses, church manners and minor anxiety attacks. But these kids wear whatever they want–torn T-shirt, faded jeans, a tie if they’re feelin’ it. Backstage, in between their performances, the kids chat about the show, the vibe, give each other pats on the back. It’s not exactly a paying gig. But for a group of pre-pubes who arrived in the back seat of their parents’ minivans, it ain’t bad.

Thirty-seven-year-old guitar teacher Solomon calls these regular concerts for parents and other camera-toting parties “The Rock Show.” They’re relaxed and casual: wine for the adults, Rice Krispies treats for the kids. The evening’s set list alternates between finger-picked classics and all-out rockers guaranteed to please, anything from the Beatles to Green Day, from Elvis Presley to U2. Back when I was a kid taking piano lessons, our dreaded yearly performances were as nerve-wracking and solemn as a first communion. Not here: This is the kind of place where a 9-year-old once sang the most amazingly tongue-in-cheek version of the Fountains of Wayne MILF anthem, “Stacy’s Mom,” to a great deal of (adult) hooting and hollering. At 10 p.m. or so, when the show has wrapped, the kids are usually spent, lying across fold-out chairs. But it’s not unusual to see a mom on her feet for the finale, throwing devil horns in the air…

Read it all.

I’m gonna load up my young boy-child and haul his adorableness over to AllGood Cafe tonight for the Zounds Sounds rock show, as the Neil Youngsters will perform Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush album….all the while whispering in my young guitar-playing offspring’s ear “see honey, there is life after Post Hardcore Screamo…”

Meet us there and we can wine and dine and dance together. 7:00 PM.

Why Milwaukee is So Damn Famous

Posted by Cindy on 23rd August 2006

Way back in early 2004, Sally Clark (Strict Management) sent me a copy of Austin-based What Made Milwaukee Famous’ debut, self-released album, Trying to Never Catch Up. At the time I was doing live radio webcasts on both my old blog server (TexasGigs.com) as well as on TexasRadio1.com…entitled…of course…The Fine Line Show. Trying to Never Catch Up went into immediate heavy rotation both on the Internet radio shows, as well as in my personal CD player.

Bandmembers Michael Kincaid and Drew Patrizi not only wrote all the lyrics for this 11-song CD, they also produced it along with co-producer Lars Goransson. A few songs were actually recorded and engineered by our local hero Matthew Barnhart at the Echo Lab in Denton.

I did have the great honor of webcasting WMMF at the (I believe the first) Spune Wall of Sound Festival at Hailey’s in Denton back in 2004. Unfortunately, I was doing live broad/webcasts at the time, so I don’t have a recording of the show. However, I still remember how amazing the band was and how blown-away the crowd was by the band’s sound.

What Made Milwaukee Famous create pop that’s rockin’ enough to shake the rafters at your favorite venue, but would also be a perfect backdrop to a drive down the coast. It’s energetic, forceful, and impassioned.

What Made Milwaukee Famous knows how to build buzz in their local Austin, TX music scene. They’ve done their time at the South by Southwest music festival, been featured on Andy Langer’s Next Big Thing on 101X, and played famed Austin City Limits TV Show (PBS), with Franz Ferdinand no less, as one of few unsigned bands in the show’s 32 year history to ever take the stage.

Already having been celebrated by spots on Billboard and Rolling Stone bands-to-watch lists, as well as appearances on WXPN’s World Café in Philadelphia and Steve Lamacq’s Music Show on the BBC, opening slots with the Arcade Fire and Black Keys, and Snow Patrol, plus their ACL Festival appearance, their debut CD, trying to never catch up, lands the band at the top of their game and ready to take on the world.

Fast-forward to the summer of 2006 (that’s like now), and you’ll find the band signed to Barsuk Records (Aqueduct, Death Cab for Cutie, Nada Surf, They Might Be Giants, John Vanderslice, Mates of State, Starlight Mints…etc…) and this week, re-released Trying to Never Catch Up with a handful of songs from the original self-released album, along with some brilliant new tuneage. Click here to purchase a copy.

This week is CD Releaseapalooza for What Made Milwaukee Famous – check it:
Friday, August 25: Waterloo Records in Austin – 5:00 PM – In-Store Performance – Free Beer!
Friday, August 26: The Beauty Bar in Austin – Listening To Party – Free Vodka

You’ll also find the boys on stage at this year’s ACL Fest in Austin on September 16th.

Here’s a track for this fabulous new album:

“Sweet Lady”.mp3

You can also find some tracks on the band’s MySpace page.

Red Monroe Live at Good Records

Posted by Cindy on 21st August 2006

Red Monroe is Eric Steele, Neal Wadley, Matt Moffitt, Jeff Gilroy, Andrew Snow, who make up one amazing freakin’ band. I feel like I’ve known this band forever, but it’s only been a couple of years. Nice guys. Great music. Plus, I simply adore their manager Chance Wimberly.

So it was quite a treat being able to, not only enjoy, but also to record their performance at Good Records this past Saturday.

Red Monroe’s sound is nearly impossible to categorize. Incorporating elements of folk, rock, punk, jazz, and techno, the band emphasizes the function of its art rather than its form. With the progressive mentality of Radiohead, Pink Floyd, and The Velvet Underground, Red Monroe fuses its individual band members’ diverse influences into polarizing, yet captivating music. An experiment in eclecticism, the band attempts to express the sentiment and creativity of each individual songwriter. This is a band with something to say, lyrically and musically, and with the courage and commitment to say it. To see Red Monroe live is to grasp the depth of the experiment. Considering all songs are written live in “the room”, it should come as no surprise that a Red Monroe show is big, bursting with creative energy.

Courtesy of ACIDplanet

Too bad my picture taking skills are less than bad…but hey, I was juggling an audio recorder, a camera and a packed Good Records.

Red Monroe’s self-titled album drops today. Getcherself a copy at Good Records during your lunch hour.

You can catch Red Monroe along with Voot Cha Index and Pleasant Grove at the Wreck Room this Saturday, August 26th – and this is a line-up that’s worth every damn cent and every damn murdered brain cell.

Stuff Creede Williams is Doing Part I

Posted by Cindy on 21st August 2006

Our boy Creede Williams will perform on August 24th in Central Park (among other dates) for this wicked-awesome little tour:

Uncharted: The Jeep® Compass Music Tour to Feature Emerging Music Artists Playing Free Concerts Across the U.S.

* G. Love & Special Sauce Kick Off Multi-City Tour with Free Concert in New York’s Central Park on Thursday, August 24
* Central Park concert includes eight emerging artists who will then tour the country performing 320 free concerts with the all-new 2007 Jeep Compass

Auburn Hills, Mich.
– The Jeep® brand announced today that eight emerging artists will tour the country performing 320 free concerts in an Uncharted: The Jeep Compass Music Tour launching the all-new 2007 Jeep Compass.

The tour kicks off Thurs., Aug. 24 with a free concert in New York City’s Central Park featuring headliner G. Love & Special Sauce and the eight emerging artists.

“The Jeep Compass music tour kick-off concert and subsequent grassroots concerts are a great opportunity to expose a wide audience to some new, really talented artists,” said G. Love. “We are excited to be part of the New York event and look forward to making some great music.”

Following the Central Park kick-off event, Uncharted: The Jeep Compass Music Tour hits the road, with the emerging artists touring eight regions of the country and performing at stops – some planned and some spontaneous – in their designated region. The performance stops will be at traditional concert venues and public locations that are popular with music-oriented audiences. During each performance, the artists will incorporate the all-new Jeep Compass with its flip-down rear lift gate speakers.

“The artists in Uncharted: The Jeep Compass Music Tour were selected for their ‘true-to-themselves’ sound. Similar to the Jeep brand, they are authentic and original,” said Jay Kuhnie, Director – Jeep Communications. “Through this concert series, we want to reach a new audience who are not traditional Jeep buyers, but a much younger group that makes music a part of its lifestyle. G. Love is an excellent choice to kick off the concert series with his unique sound and popularity with the people we want to reach.”

Fans can track the tour and listen to the artists on the Jeep Compass Uncharted MySpace page (www.myspace.com/jeep). The MySpace page will include a tour schedule of performance dates and locations, downloadable videos and pictures from performances, and an interactive chat with other fans.

The 2007 Jeep Compass expands the Jeep brand into a new territory with an all-new modern-styled compact Jeep that delivers fun and utility, while Uncharted: The Jeep Compass Music Tour is an opportunity for emerging artists to expose their music to a wider audience.

“The Jeep brand has a history of supporting emerging artists at owner events such as Camp Jeep®, so the music tour is a natural extension for us,” said Kuhnie. “It is mutually beneficial. It gives the emerging artists a chance to increase their audience base and gives us the opportunity to showcase the unique features of our newest Jeep vehicle in less traditional settings.”

Uncharted: The Jeep Compass Music Tour

The Thurs., Aug. 24 kick-off concert, featuring headliner G. Love & Special Sauce and eight emerging artists, begins at 6:30 p.m. at Rumsey Playfield in New York’s Central Park. G. Love, whose style is described as blues infused hip-hop, will perform a 75-minute set during the Central Park concert that will include new tracks from his just-released CD “Lemonade” and other favorites. The emerging artists, listed below, will each perform a short set prior to G. Love. Additionally, other artists will perform using the Jeep Compass with its unique flip-down rear lift gate speakers as their stage.

Following are the eight emerging artists and their tour cities for the Uncharted: The Jeep Compass Music Tour, which begins on Aug. 26 at locations across the country. For a more detailed concert schedule, visit www.myspace.com/jeep. All performances are free of charge.

Photographs and biographies of the artists are available on request.

About the Jeep Brand
The Jeep brand’s 65-year history of legendary capability has made it synonymous with freedom, adventure, mastery and authenticity. In 2006, the Jeep brand continues to deliver on its promise to provide rugged, versatile, innovative four-wheel drive vehicles with the recently introduced Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Wrangler 4-door Unlimited, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot.

This expansion of the Jeep brand grows its showroom from three to seven sport utility vehicles following last year’s introduction of the Jeep Commander. The other two Jeep vehicles are the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty.

2007 Jeep Compass
The all-new 2007 Jeep Compass combines the packaging and functionality of a sport-utility vehicle (SUV) with the performance, handling, fuel economy and price of a compact car or small pickup. With a starting U.S. MSRP of $15,985 (including destination charges), Compass is the Jeep brand’s first front-wheel-drive-based product with a fully independent suspension for comfortable on-road ride and handling and fun-to-drive characteristics. Jeep Compass will be available in both front- and four-wheel drive, and will deliver best-in-class 4×4 fuel economy for the compact SUV segment.

Go here for dates, times and some nice ear-candy.

Voot Cha Index Live at Good Records

Posted by Cindy on 21st August 2006

I just adore these kids. This is the second time I've recorded Voot Cha Index, once at the old Good Records location, then this past Saturday at the relatively newish location on Lower Greenville.

The new larger stage definitely suits this energetic young band much better.

This is unedited, and I arrived just at the end of one song…video forthcoming…

Buh-Bye Buck’s

Posted by Cindy on 21st August 2006

What a crappy sh*t-filled weekend. I only accomplished one show (which I’m uploading now), was once again reminded that ex-husbands can be total assholes, as well as the reminder that motherly responsibilities can sometimes change even the best laid (and paid-for) plans.

I just returned from Glen Rose, for today, almost 6 years to the day, we closed the books on Buck’s on the Brazos. Very bittersweet, very bittersweet indeed. After spending about 3 of those years making the 90+ mile drive, sleeping in the old stone house with the field mice and giant black hairy spiders, putting together and breaking down luxury tents, scrubbing poop off toilet seats that our lovely campers left for me…well, suffice to say I ain’t gonna miss none of that. However, I will miss the music festivals, along with the divine little tree-covered area that sat just above the Brazos River…and if it were not for Buck’s on the Brazos, I’d have never really known or come to love the live/local music scene.

Just a few bands and artists who performed on Buck soil: Billy Joe Shaver, Rusty Wier, Tommy Alverson, Opie Hendrix, The Lonelies, Thrift Store Cowboys, Jay Johnson, Davin James, John Nitzinger, Steven Fromholz, Terry Rasor, John Evans, The Dust Devils, Joyful Sinners, Larry Joe Taylor, Macon Greyson, Johnny Mack, Scott Copeland, T-Roy Miller, James Hinkle, Fritz Schultz, Alex Whitmore, Bonnie Whitmore, Maren Morris, Johnny Mack, Ed Burleson, Kurt South, Jordan Mycoskie, Ronny Spears, Brian Burns, Randy Hopper, F.Co, Eli Young Band, Eric Hisaw, Trainwreck, Wade Hatton, Zen Bubba, Ryan Turner, Ronny Duwe, Mike Blakely and more more more.

It was a good run…now on to bigger and better…or something like that…
