The Fine Line

Fine Line: July, 2006

I’ll Just Sit Here and Eat His Dust…

Posted by Cindy on 28th July 2006

Bloody friggin’ hell…Stephen R. has been MIA for the past few weeks…gone-missing shortly after he agreed to be our Electronica/Bit-Pop/DJ expert here on The Fine Line and after I suggested we do a full-on audio/video interview with Paul Slocum about his faboo band Treewave, as well as his and/or gallery. Now that damn WSJR beat us to the punch…at least the the anonymous one knows how to conduct a decent interview though, so ’nuff of my whining…

The more I think about, the more I realize that despite only having seen them live twice, and only having heard a limited amount of their material, Tree Wave could easily be my favorite band from Dallas proper. Or to put it another way, there isn’t any other band in Dallas that I’d be more excited about seeing live. Their recorded material sounds like absolutely nothing else being made around here, and their live shows are exciting and interesting in a way that most local bands really don’t even touch. I wanted to ask Paul Slocum more about his band, and the process he goes through when writing songs. So I did. Some of the questions and answers run over from one to the next, but thats what happens when you do email interviews:

Read about it.

…sigh…if anyone happens to run into Ruiz, tell I’d like to have a word…

Just a Spoon Full of Sugar Helps the Medicine…

Posted by Cindy on 28th July 2006

While little bun-in-the-oven CoManda awaits his/her grand entrance into the world, Amanda Robinson plans to sit out for the interim. Therefore, there’s an opening for one badass drummer…

As most of you know, the lovely Amanda is now with child, and smokey bars are not the best places for mothers-to-be….
So we’re looking to fill some very big shoes.

We’re hoping for just the right drummer that’s not already in 10 bands, or possible a cast of drummers if avalibility is limited, but mostly for now we’re just wanting to see what’s out there.

Check out our myspace (http://myspace.com/medicinewindow) for a few examples of songs.

As for the stuff that hasn’t been recorded yet, I hate to use other bands as a description, but to save time what the hell. The material is a little dancy, a little heavy – so think some sort of mesh of Shellac + QOTSA, of course w/a little 80′s new wave thrown in. I have no idea what that means, but it made sense before I typed it out.

Just drop us a line here, or e-mail me if you wish. (Cody@TheFoldMagazine.com).

Hm. Maybe I’ll pull out the ol’ drumset and take a chance…then again…maybe not…I’d hate to see the look on Cody’s face when I attempt to catch a beat…

D.O.bservations

Posted by Cindy on 28th July 2006

This week’s Dallas Observer finds a nice little sumpin’ sumpin’ on The Drams.

Sam Machkovech writes…

Best and the rest of the Drams meet here for our interview for a number of reasons: no A/C at the practice space; Dan’s is nearby; they’ve got beer. But the random, blunt poet couldn’t have hurt, nor could the band’s history with the building. On March 12, 2005, Best, drummer Tony Harper and guitarist Jess Barr buried their previous band, Slobberbone, beneath the club’s floors after covering them with two and a half hours of sweat, beer and boisterous country-rock anthems…

Read it 3 times aloud.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Sam Machkovech has already gone on record as to his thoughts on DMN columnist Steve Blow.

See Unfair Park.

Sam went straight to the source in this article concerning the whole El Angel/Lil’ Jon/Gangsta shootings last week…

…The way Whiz T puts it, there might not be a harder tightrope to walk–get the crowd moving (and drunk) with a limited palette of songs, too many of which are potential powder kegs. Sure, a drunk patron is unstoppable if he’s got stupid on his mind, and most of the time–huge surprise!–nothing bad happens because of the music. But Whiz T recognizes some responsibility: “You can’t just give the crowd what they want to hear. That’s where your ability and talent as a DJ has to come through. Some DJs get so far off into the fight music that they let it take over. Sometimes, the music can dictate the situation…I might have this click in here, this gang in here. If I throw this [song] out, it might cause a fight…”

I just opened my inbox to find about 50 emails from folks concerned about a report stemming from this post about our dear friend that somehow turned into rumors that Chris Penn had passed away.

Not so…at this writing Chris is alive and kickin’ and stockin’ new music.

Smile for the Camera

Posted by Cindy on 27th July 2006

Bobby Ewing Dreams is tuggin’ at my heart strings with yet another good (knocked one outta the park) post. Check out this interview with a couple of young hot-shot local music videographers Will Dowdy and Taylor van Amburgh.

…With several Web sites (most notably YouTube and Google Video), bands are able to promote themselves in a variety of ways, from standard music videos to interviews to live shows. And while we know there are others in the area filming bands, two people have recently been pushing their way through crowds at the clubs, getting good shots and editing together the action that makes you feel like you were there or at least make you wish you were…

Check it all out here.

Memories Indeed…

Posted by Cindy on 26th July 2006

Those of you who have hung at my blog, either before at my original blog, or this here one with Amanda…well, you should know of my intense adoration for Eisley. I’ve interviewed the band a couple of times…and I was embarrassingly giddy both times. I-LOVE-THIS-BAND.

I just checked my old mailbox and found an update from Eisley with news about a new video for their gorgeous tune, “Memories.”

I’m on my way to a funeral, and praying for another friend of The Fine Line who needs all the prayers he can get….so this song seemed rather apropo…

Bobby Ewing Sips Tea with Chad Stockslager

Posted by Cindy on 26th July 2006

That Dreamy Bobby Ewing dude or dudette (sigh…anonymity can be trying…) did a loverly little interview with the divine Chad Stockslager of The Drams and Budapest One.

What is your music background? More specifically, how did you get started playing piano? Was it a relative or a band that led you to want to play music? If so, who?

I grew up singing harmony with my father. He was an Everly Brothers fanatic and that sound really stuck with me. My childhood was scored with old barber shop quartet songs, hillbilly standards and gospel. My grandmother played the piano and taught me my first songs. She loved to hear me play and that was what kept me at it…Read it all.

Cool! I grew up with a mom who was an Everly Brothers fanatic! I played those old records ’til they couldn’t play no mo’…Go read it all...and stick around for today’s show recommendations…I’ve yet to disagree with a one thus far.

Drams Drop

Posted by Cindy on 25th July 2006

The Drams’ long, long, long (at least by me) awaited album, Jubilee Dive has finally come to pass. You can order it right this sec.

Better yet, meet me over at Tower Records tonight at 7 PM for a live in-store performance…it’s gonna be swingin’.

Jam packed with brawny, spirited, hands-in-the-air rockers, stirring anthems and harrowing ventures exploring a culture sapped by hollow heroes and soul-killing, high-tech crapola, The Drams careen out of Texas with Jubilee Dive—a welcome jolt of rockyroll that is fresh and vital even as it flaunts an effortless command of time-tested rock maneuvers.

Fronted by singer/songwriter/guitarist Brent Best, The Drams’ lineup merges lead guitarist Jess Barr and drummer Tony Harper (from Best’s long-running, alt-everything mavericks, Slobberbone) with singer/keyboardist Chad Stockslager and singer/bassist Keith Killoren (both from Dallas’ Budapest One), and while fans of Best’s previous work won’t be thrown completely for a loop, The Drams’ soaring vocal harmonies, expanded instrumental range and ebullient, hook-laden rock’n’pop adventurousness have taken it all to a new, invigorating level.

Best readily acknowledges that Stockslager and Killoren’s vocal capabilities—along with the former’s sterling work on keys—have greatly extended his artist’s palette and enabled him to demonstrate finesse and subtlety in ways he’d previously only dreamt about.
The Drams

“The real upside is having people who can sing our sound with me,” he states, “and just finally being able to touch upon all the things I’ve always wanted to touch upon, but never really had all the resources to make it happen.”

Produced by Matt Pence (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel), Jubilee Dive is an ambitious, 14-song tour-de-force that jumps out of the gate with “The Truth Lies Low,” an outwardly up-beat, Trojan horse of a raver that aims a scathing diatribe at a society which has allowed its individuality and creativity to be co-opted by bells-and-whistles technology and lemming-like consumerism.

“I was trying, on the whole, to make this a lighter, more hopeful album,” Best confesses, laughing. “But to me, we live in a time when people have just gotten so used to bullshit on every level that you can spew utter bullshit—and be called on it!—and then just go, ‘well, here’s the next bullshit,’ and somehow, that’s okay.” But bullshit doesn’t play here: The Drams are drilling for the jugular with no punches pulled.

Fueled by blistering guitars, a swirling organ figure and a killer tandem vocal track, the celebratory “Hummalong” counsels being true to one’s vision(s)—yet another recurring theme of Jubilee Dive.

“Holy Moses” is a gorgeous, languid prayer for redemption that conjures a dreamy Jayhawks/Band/Abbey Road collision; “Unhinged” is a Saturday night party cheerleader, and “Fireflies” is a cool border/tango hybrid reminder to appreciate life’s simple, yet life-affirming, pleasures.

Throughout, Best repeatedly addresses ennui, the pressure to surrender to senses-dulling routine and the need for regular stock-taking to keep track of one’s True Self amid a squirrel-cage existence.

The Jules Shear-meets-The Beatles “September’s High” is just such a wake-up call, as is the sunny, Sixties-era California psychedelic pop suite of “You Won’t Forget”.

Jubilee Dive’s nearly-70-minute length flies in the face of a trend for shorter albums, yet Best’s enormous accumulated backlog of top-shelf material awaiting a band capable of fully-realizing its multiple textures/possibilities simply over-ran prudence.

Add to that the uncanny, naturally-flowing tracking of this masterful song cycle, and it’s virtually impossible to find even one cut that not only doesn’t belong here, but that doesn’t belong exactly where it is.

“That was it, ya know?” Best reflects. “Everything still made sense, so we went with it. I knew we were pushing the time thing, but I really wanted to keep the arc of the story line.”

The astonishingly uplifting underdog anthem “Shortsighted” is a stone marvel—and might well have been the perfect closer for a lesser disc, but The Drams were still holding 20-plus minutes of powerhouse rock in their hands.

“Crudely Drawn” is a giddy, closing-time rave-up, “Make A Book” is a meaty, blue-collar populist rocker with a vintage, Thin Lizzy buzz, and “Des Moines” is a haunting, lonely, band-on-the-road heartbreaker.

Jubilee Dive rolls out with the quietly disturbing “Wonderous Life,” a blurry, biting, visceral stream-of-consciousness examination of alcoholic fog reeking of Bukowski/Burroughs horrors set in an ironically stately backdrop.

“My favorite songs are the ones that write themselves,” says Best. “I remember writing it and kind of waiting for the hook—you know, the thing that kept it from being too literal—and I don’t know that it ever came for me. But that’s kind of where, for me, this song has its power…”

So there you have it…The Drams’ Jubilee Dive. Crack it open, toss it on yer music box and be prepared to surrender to a band whose time has come—and not a moment too soon.

– Jim Musser, April 2006

Yeah…what that guy says. I haven’t heard the album yet, but I’ve heard most of the songs live at various shows and I can confidantly say that the CD already has a place in my CD player. You can still here twinges of Slobberbone here and there, but I also love the poppy leanings, chock full of horns, keys and more.

The Drams also perform at Dan’s Silverleaf on Thursday, July 27th at 10 PM.

Destination Dada

Posted by Cindy on 25th July 2006

I know we show a lotta Club Dada luvin’ ’round here, but it’s so incredibly justified. Since the new owners took over a few months back, Club Dada has become our favorite destination for some of the best music around. Bob and the boys have welcomed a team of lady local music promoters who have brought in the best of local, the best of national, and even some heading over from across the pond in the coming months. Not only has Dada dedicated itself to keeping it fresh and new with a range of genres sharing the stage each night, they are also bringing back legends in music with bands that truly shaped the Deep Ellum nightlife in its early days.

First we got the chance to experience the original New Bohemians a few weeks ago, and this week/weekend brings back more amazing artists…

See you there darlings…

Nikos Brisco has been living in the borough of Astoria, Queens just outside of New York City for the past four years. He has been performing and recording professionally as a singer/songwriter since 1989 when he formed the post modern country band Fever In The Funkhouse (voted “Best New Act 90″ and “Best Act Overall 91″ by The Dallas Observer). For four years Fever was one of the defining pioneers of the Deep Ellum Music scene. Originally born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Brisco at an early age picked up the thread of working class style of song and story that is exclusive to true Texas folk music. His style is to the point and poetic, using an acoustic guitar as landscape for stories of love found, lost and torn, songs of simple things and real moments turned mythological in the scheme of a life lived hard with nothing in hand and everything to lose…Read more.

In 1989, Fever In The Funkhouse was another unknown Dallas band emerging in the Deep Ellum music scene. Within months of their first show a Club Clearview, the band’s Popularity soared as they played their innovative style of Post Modern Country/Rock for packed houses. Over a period of two years Fever recived critical acclaim and numerous awards from the Dallas press and public. Unfortunately the band split up while on the verge of a major record deal. Prior to disbanding in March of 1991 the band recorded live to DAT demos for what was to be their debut record. In an attempt to capture a small part of the extensive catalogue of this influential band, Parallax Records presents this collection in memory of one of the greatest performances that was never released.

Ten Hands
8 PM

Somewhere between the kitchen sink jazz-rock-art dynamics of Frank Zappa and the psychedelic punk of the Meat Puppets, Ten Hands found their musical niche. Born from the Dallas suburb of Denton, TX, in the mid-’80s, Ten Hands briefly enjoyed heaps of acclaim and an impressive following in their home state. Their music tended to be high in energy, syncopated and funky. Matched with Paul Slavens’ charismatic vocal stylings and political assertions that denigrated the ruling elite, the complacent middle class, and environmental evils, Ten Hands was one of the more politically oriented Texas bands of the era. They rarely forgot to be fun, however, and their musical playfulness and frequent lyrical absurdism belied any pretensions they may have had.

Sometime in late 1986, Mike Dillon, Gary Muller, and Matt Chamberlain were playing in Dallas-based band Zane Grey, who actually appeared on Star Search. They did not win, but Muller did get to touch Ed McMahon (specifically, his hand). Meanwhile, Steve Brand and Slavens were playing in a Denton band called the Gonemen. Dillon, Muller, and Chamberlain lived in the same Denton house as other members of the Gonemen, and when dissatisfaction with both groups began to appear, the idea for a new band was spawned.

The first Ten Hands rehearsal (documented on videotape) took place late 1986 in Denton. Shortly thereafter, Zane Grey’s manager, Tony Johnson, accepted an offer to manage the fledgling band. For the first year, Ten Hands played mostly small venues in Denton and performed a weekly gig at the Prophet Bar, a seminal Deep Ellum club in Dallas. During this time, a studio recording was made and handmade cassettes were sold and distributed in and around the Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Denton area.

Chamberlain and Dillon were already well-known in Denton as top players in the University of North Texas Jazz program, and interest in the band soon grew. It was also during this time that New Bohemians were becoming a major draw in Dallas. It happened that several members of that band were friends with a few Ten Hands members, and ultimately, New Bohemians finagled some opening slots for Ten Hands at Deep Ellum’s celebrated Club Dada. The Club Dada shows helped expose the band to a much wider audience, and the venue would later host many of Ten Hands’ most memorable performances. In late 1988, the band went into the studio to record Kung Fu…That’s What I Like. As New Bohemians vacated Dallas for bigger and better things, Ten Hands stepped in to fill the void and began what would be a three or four year run as one of the region’s most popular draws. The band won numerous Dallas Observer Awards in 1988-1989, and shortly after the release of their first live CD, The Big One Is Coming, the band caught the attention of well-known producer/artist T. Bone Burnett. Burnett gave the band his assurances that he would procure them a record deal and produce the album. It seemed as though the band was on its way to the “big time.” The months dragged on with no deal in sight, however, and an unsuccessful 1990 tour (with future members of the Gourds) sapped the band’s enthusiasm.

At a SXSW performance, the band was offered a record deal by an independent producer in L.A. Desperate to release an album after two years of inactivity, the band agreed and began work on Be My Guru in late 1991. While the album contained some of the band’s best songs, the recording itself was a disappointment and the relationship with the label grew stormy. By the time the band left the label, much of their earlier momentum was lost.

As the band’s popularity began to wane, a friend of the band, Byron Wilson, offered to produce a CD. Jazz for Jerks was recorded in early 1993 with the assistance of the band’s friend and longtime collaborative producer, Dave Castell. While the new sound was powerful, the enthusiasm within and without the band was lacking.

The band was about to pack it in when a label in Memphis took an interest in the group. A new guitarist, Ed McMahon (in a strange twist of fate), and drummer Greg Beck were hired. A demo record was recorded with the brand new lineup, but the album was never mixed or released. After a lot of contract negotiation and another year of playing, things wound down yet again for Ten Hands, and the band called it quits in 1995.

I’m just planning to set up a tent in back of Club Dada tonight and will return home sometime on Monday morning…see you all there…

Spector 45 Bids a Fond Farewell

Posted by Cindy on 24th July 2006

I received this news last week, but was told to keep it under wraps for the time being. However, Frankie made the official announcement today…

Unfortunately guys, the rumors are true, about a week ago Johnny Crowbar decided that being in a band wasn’t for him and Spector 45 ceased to be a band. I know alot of you say that we ought to just find another bassist, but things are much more complicated than that. Animal Anthony Also made it apparent that he wasn’t ready to try training yet ANOTHER bassist, so he respectfully steped aside. It is not in our nature to have to cancle shows, but neither one of the other guys was really up for sticking it out through the rest of our shows together. I am extreamly sorry for the inconvienience this has caused some people. I am covering as many of the Spector 45 shows as Frankie 45 (Solo acoustic) as possible.

A new band is on the way right now so feel free to keep posted and we’ll keep you updated, the new band should be ready to rock in about a month.
Thanks again to all the folks who loved and supported us throughout all the years of Spector 45. Hopefully this next endevor will be just as successful and fun.
- frankie 45

Frankie is a great talent and a tremendous performer, so this will most likely just be a tiny bump in the road for him. You need to check him out solo though – he’s really great.

We’ll keep you updated as things progress…meantime, Frankie performs this Thursday, July 27th at Bend Studio for Tania Rivas’ Open Mic Night.

Emil Does Dallas

Posted by Cindy on 24th July 2006

I’ve had the hots for Emil Rapstine since the first time I laid eyes on him. Then I saw his band, The Angelus perform at Hailey’s a few years ago and knew I’d remain enamored for life.

This news just slid across my desk…

Brace yourself, and goodbye! The Angelus starts a new chapter. Solo shows for the interim.

Hello everyone,

If you haven’t heard by now The Angelus has recently relocated to Dallas, Texas in hopes to make our lives a little easier, and our music making ventures much more productive. We are now all located in the same house, with a practice space, and “studio” on the grounds. It’s not Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, but it works for us and should prove to predispose us to working on music when we aren’t at our day jobs. Also on the upside: No more long daily commutes from Denton to Dallas to get to our jobs, and more time to work on our next record. We look forward to exploring Dallas and making new friends, and most of all being together and able to concentrate on what we love to do most, our music.

The big downside of course is that we have to leave out beloved Denton. Some of us have lived in Denton for over ten years, so it is very hard to leave the place where we started, where we made so many friends, where we were inspired and encouraged by so many great bands. Thank you. We hope Denton understands that we’ll have you in our hearts always, and we will be back.

Looking forward:

While we are settling into our new abode, I have scheduled a few solo shows. (More to satiate my shaking hands and want to sing than to tide anyone over for an Angelus performance I bet!) Nevertheless, if you want to hear some new Angelus songs in their early stages (Show Me No Ghosts, Crimson Shadow, You are Turned to Stone) be sure and catch one of the shows listed below.

All the best,
Emil Rapstine

From Cave to Cavern – Hime Emerges

Posted by Cindy on 24th July 2006

My darling, precious Andrew Hime shall make an appearance this Friday, July 28th at The Cavern. That little exciting event alone is enough to light a fire under my arse, pack up the recording gear and hang wit’ Hime.

The band he’s most interested in seeing, hearing and audio-interviewin’ is The Channel from Austin. I can honestly admit that I’d never heard of ‘em until Andrew brought them to my attention. He is, as usual, dead-on. I can’t wait to see the band live now that I’ve taken a few to listen to their tuneage…and I’m even gonna bring 11-bucks so’s I can walk outta there with a CD

From high upon a hill, a distant sibylline machine sketches out in water the blueprint for the gears which drive the force that is The Channel. You may have heard the sounds before in a lucid dream, or resonating through the paralysis of an oppressed nightmare scream. Heard more and more, both domestically and abroad, The Channel pushes onward, not out of self-serving ambition, but from the inherent drive to do so. Five songwriters, siblings, and friends have forged through the unknown territories of jaded hipsters, socialite sisters, voluntary enlisters, madams and misters; in order to bring some happiness to the broken-hearted, courage to the downtrodden, and honor to the unsung working class. The passion and determination that powers this machine derives from a well which may never go dry.

Join us on Friday night, won’t you?
