Can Do Cadence

Posted by Cindy on July 20th, 2006

I have 2 secrets that I’m going to share with you right now.

#1 – When I was around 12 years old, my mom gave me a shiny red unicycle for Christmas. I used to ride it all around my neighborhood. I never really thought about how strange it musta looked until one fated night when I rather dreamily started telling the story. It struck me that perhaps I should not re-hash this part of my life when I realized the look of confusion and horror on the faces around me.

#2 – I was the biggest band geek on earth. I was a percussionist and yes…I was in the marching band all 3 years of high school. Oh shut the hell up.

So I’m telling you all this pointless drivel because tonight…tonight…there is a most wondrous event in which I attended for many many many years and I must ask that you give it a chance…you’ll get goose-bumps…

There are all these kids who try-out for award-winning Drum & Bugle Corps. Once they make the cut, they travel all over the country doing shows and competing, sleeping on gymnasium floors, living on buses, practicing in extreme heat.

A perfect example of what these kids go through is this peek into a day in the life.

Below is a peek at the award-winning Blue Devils Drum Corps – gosh, I think I’ve seen a gazillion Blue Devils’ performances over the years. The video is kinda dark…but who cares….drum corps rule!

The Blue Devils perform tonight at the big big North Texas Festival of Drum and Bugle Corps at Lake Highlands High School at 10:09 PM, along with 11 other D&B Corps from around the country.

My mom was in the drum corp in Portland, Maine in the 60′s in her teens. She did all this traveling around, sweating in her uniform, and her dad (my grandfather) was even their headmaster. I still have his beret/hat/whatever you call it, with the tassel and all. The best part were the stories my mom would tell about her and the rest of the corp playing pranks at the hotels they visited. DRUM CORPS RULE!!!

Dang! I wish I would have heard about this sooner! I had a meeting to attend last night, but I SO woulda bailed out on it.

I know you’re probably posting this stuff whenever you can around other job related duties and such – but if there were any way to post this stuff earlier, even earlier in the day if not the day before, it’d be great. Lots of days I hit the site first thing in the morning to read about something I would have/might have gone to see the night before, but the post was late afternoon and I missed it. :-(

Not complaining – I love the site, and keep up the good work. REALLY! I and really do appreciate the advance notice on the Ten Hands thing. I went to college in Denton in the late 80′s when Ten Hands was in their heyday. I loved them, had some *cassettes* of theirs, and lost them all somewhere along the way. Finding the link to the MP3s on your site was GREAT! I’ve been listening to almost nothing else since then!

Drum corps in the ’60s? Wow, I wonder how many women were in the drum corps in those days. That’s way too cool.

I’ll do better on getting shows/events posted earlier. It’s sort of one of the most tedious parts of running the blog, so I tend to procrastinate at times. I’ll do better…
