Ten Hands…TEN-FREAKIN’-HANDS!
Robert Wilonsky Writes:
“So, let’s see…first Edie Brickell and the New Bos play Club Dada. Then, on July 25, Nick Brisco and Chris Claridy of Fever in the Funkhouse get a gig at the resurrected Deep Ellum mainstay. And now, on Sunday, it’s–no, really–Ten Hands, which, last I looked, broke up in 1995. Who’s next on the Amnesia Lane circuit? Soul Food Café? Dr. Tongue? Pop Poppins? Then again, getting the old gang together is precisely what the new owners at Dada need to do at this late date. Slapping that Holy Trinity of late ’80s bands onstage and out in the courtyard can only serve to remind folks who’ve stayed away from Deep Ellum for years why they went downtown in the first place: to dig, in part, on the funky free-jazz-gone-mellow-pop rants and rumblings that once served as the neighborhood’s foundation. It’s old home week as Paul Slavens, now an underappreciated disc-spinner at KERA-FM (90.1), slaps the Ten Hands back together to noodle and doodle at Dada like it’s 1988; gonna bust out the hairpiece and fake I.D. for this one, guarantee, then head over to the Twilight Room to check out the ghost of Three on a Hill.”

I usually do my homework when it comes to bands/shows I promote here on The Fine Line.
It's been a tough week for Ms. Amanda…and I sort of fell off the job…or lost a lottamore brain cells or sumthin'.
Anyhoo, stupid MySpace has been glitched-up for about 103 hours, therefore bands that ain't gotta website have been somewhat…um…screwed. Long story short…cuz I gottalotta rehash from last night…Last Picture Show ain't no damn "jam-band" as told on Google searches…in fact, I sort of already knew 'em and didn't know I knew 'em….here's a samplin' from last night…more to come…

If there is some dumbass out there who don’t know the exceptionally talented and divinely handsome Cabe Booth….then stay in yo’ dumbass world…but fer the restaya hipsters, there’s a party goin’ down this eve…but first allow me to digress so’s that we can rejoice in all that is Cabe…
I am a Dallas native. In my teenage years I have been a National Junior Olympic Fencer for 4 years and a DJ for KNON in the 80’s (at the time I was the youngest DJ in the country) with a show called Audio Abuse. During those years I spent my free time skateboarding at the clown ramp with other local dallas skaters (Phillips, Hollenbeck, Roach, Wilkes, Craig Johnson etc.) and hanging out at the Twilight Room (and all its incarnations) and Theater Gallery.
After graduating from Lake Highlands High School I spent 2 years at UT in Austin attempting my horrendous mistake of business school. After the University politely asked me to leave in 1989 I spent a year in Dallas before deciding on a career in art. I arrived in Denton in 1990 and enrolled in the visual art school there. While in Denton I joined the infamous Delta Lodge. I spent most of my time organizing concerts at the house or in the backyard with bands like Vibrolux, Hagfish, Tripping Daisy, Brutal Juice and Baboon with quite a bit of time upstairs drinking Natural Light and smoking Basic cigarettes in my room while doing large paintings or murals in the house.
In 1991 I was given the task of booking Fry Street Fair, a job I continued to do until 2004. I have always treasured that job and feel it was one of the most important things I have ever had the pleasure of being involved with. But as all things do, it has changed over the years and different forces came into play which eventually convinced me to voluntarily step down from the job in 2004 to allow the younger kids at the Delta Lodge to enjoy the thrill of booking the event like I had enjoyed for so many years.
I graduated in 1995 with a BFA in Fine Arts and moved back to Dallas to work in band management and booking. I was the booking agent for Love Swing, Vibrolux and Tablet for 2 years or so until the bands either moved on or signed with major label.
After that I returned to concentrating on my art. After a couple years of mild depression and little work, the Curtain Club called me to start doing band portraits for the new venue. Starting in 1998 I began painting detailed portraits of many Dallas headliners. Since starting, I have painted well over 150 portraits for the club which now coat the walls inside.
Using a style of broken wood panels I also began creating large multi panel images of aircraft and flight, mainly centering on WW2 aviation. In 2003 I was offered the job of doing large 4′x4′ portraits at what is now Nokia Theater in Grand Prairie. This added client finally allowed me to become self-sufficient as an artist (something I never thought possible).
Since starting at Nokia I have painted over 50 autographed panels including artists such as Ringo Starr, White Stripes, Elvis Costello, Chris Rock, Willie Nelson and many more (If you see a band playing there, then there is a 95% chance the have a portrait.) All of these paintings are unfortunately hung in the backstage area and not visible to the public….
I’ve loved this Cabe-man for many a year…and it’s a whole new year kicking off for him tonight at The Cavern for the biggest, bestest, most kick-assest birthday bash this town has seen…

Revolution Gallery Presents: A Study of Self Portraits
How one sees themselves is a measure not only of self-worth, but of a deeper, fascinating suboncscious constant. The self portrait is a display of you as only you can describe. In general, there is a reciprocal approach to producing ourselves in art form. We measure the perceptions of the world around us, accepting and interacting with the stimulus that is in us…

Tattoo You
Skin artists show off at Kettle Art
By Jennifer MedinaThe artistic worth of tattoos has always been up for debate. While there are some people who don’t even consider it a form of art, others think of it as the ultimate form of self-expression, both for the artist and the human canvas. There used to be a time when the only people you’d see with tattoos were retired military men, former cons and those sketchy-looking guys who lived on the fringe. These days, the taboo of tattoos is all but gone. With Miami Ink on the same network that brings us Trading Spaces and What Not To Wear and Britney Spears-like celebrities and athletes showing their own colorful skin with pride, tattoo culture is becoming a more and more mainstream part of society and pop culture. By taking the art off of the body and putting it onto canvases, Kettle Art, the not-quite-a-year-old art gallery in Deep Ellum, is going one step further. Beyond Skin Deep, an exhibition featuring the art of local tattoo artists such as Casey Corklic, Mark Merchant and Jon Chancey, will give people an opportunity to remove the flesh element of tattoos and focus on the image, showing us what these guys can really do with ink. The opening reception takes place at 7 p.m. Sunday at Kettle Art, 2714 Elm St.
