Laura Palmer Live at The Double-Wide

Posted by Cindy on 26th June 2006

She'll prolly hate me for this – but it must be said…Laura Palmer is just as cute as a really cute button. Add to that her hilariously witty sense of songwriting and you've got the perfect package for a gorgeous night at The Double-Wide.

“Achieving musical transcendence is a tricky feat, almost definitively. If it happens at all, it happens naturally ‹ and perhaps nobody knows that better than Seattle, Washington¹s Band of Horses.
Guitarist/vocalist Ben Bridwell and guitarist Mat Brooke formed Band of Horses in 2004, after the dissolution of their nearly ten-year run in northwest melancholic darlings Carissa¹s Wierd. Carissa¹s Wierd trafficked in sadly beautiful orchestral pop, whose songs told unflinching stories of heartbreak and loss, leavened with defeatist humor. And, Band of Horses rises from the ashes of that well-loved and short-lived band. Buoyed by Bridwell¹s warm, reverb-heavy vocals (which strangely channel a dichotomous blend of Wayne Coyne, Brian Wilson, and Doug Martsch,) Band of Horses¹ woodsy, dreamy songs ooze with amorphous tension, longing and hope.”

Double-Wide Re-Hash #3 – The Strange Boys

Posted by Cindy on 26th June 2006

The first time I saw The Strange Boys live was back in early December at The Cavern. I loved 'em like candy.

The second time I saw The Strange Boys live was yesterday at The Double-Wide. I loved 'em like chocolate candy.

If these kids don't make it big time, then I freakin' give up. You would be foolish to miss any of their upcoming shows – don't be foolish, it causes wrinkles.

Monday, June 26thBeerland in Austin
Saturday, July 1stBeerland in Austin
Saturday, July 22ndThe Double-Wide

I was so entranced with the band yesterday that I captured audio (full performance)…

…and video.

Every year the FW Weekly puts together a big-ass Music Awards pre-party to give folks a chance to hear the nominees live, and a chance for last minute voting (the old-fashioned way…like with a paper ballot…and a #2 pencil). This year they got all ambitious and spread the paaahrtaaay all over Sundance Square.

Everything kicks off at 4 PM and they ain’t chargin’ a plug nickel for any of it. Rather they’ve made it a little more interesting for all – profits from the sale of one helluva compilation CD will benefit this year’s charity sponsor, SafeHaven of Tarrant County. The CD is only 5-bucks and is chock full of Panther City creamy goodness:

“These Are the Dead Days” by Calhoun, “My Movie Morning” by The Color of May, “These Tears Could Rust a Train” by The Theater Fire, “Heartbreak” by Stephen Pointer, “Tender” by Black Tie Dynasty, “Hold Me Down” by the cut*off, “Seven Seas” by Darth Vato, “My New Romance” by The Burning Hotels, “All These Years” by Lost Country, “A Good Place to Start” by Chatterton, “Love’s Bitter Rage” by Jhon Kahsen, and “Go Down Moses” by Jason Eady.

I’ve been buggin’ Mariani for like a week about the exact schedule, but he ain’t sharing. So below are links to the very odd locations (mostly sports bars) for a fab day of music:

8.0
Rick O’Shea’s
Flying Saucer
The Pour House

Bands performing: (dunno where, dunno when)
Alan, Black Tie Dynasty, The Burning Hotels, Calhoun, Chatterton, the cut*off, Darth Vato, Sara Donaldson, Jason Eady, Electric Mountain Rotten Apple Gang, The February Chorus, The Fellow Americans, JustCause, Latin Express, Legends of the South, Maren Morris, Nuwamba, Pablo and the Hemphill 7, Stephen Pointer, John Price, PrinceRodriguez, Poo Live Crew, Sleeplab, and The Theater Fire

I know things kick off at 4 PM and should wrap-up around 10 PM.

Quick Read

Posted by Cindy on 23rd June 2006

ED. NOTE – I been wit’out Internet since 2 PM this afternoon – the day job is all about antiques, and that includes its computers. There are tremendous shows to go tonight, and I hope you darlings made good decisions and have a blast. I’m hittin’ the hay – I’m pooped and need to prepare for Sunday…this was my last post this afternoon before we lost Internet…thank me for hitting “Save” for a change – very un-Cindy-like..I love you Hunter Hauk…

I love clicking over to any site that features Carter Albrecht. Thank you

Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians will play the outdoor stage of Club Dada for two special shows this weekend, previewing songs from the band’s first album in 16 years, Stranger Things.

Keyboardist Carter Albrecht (also of local band Sorta) has been playing with the New Bohemians since 1999. While the group may not recapture the success of 1989′s multiplatinum Shooting Rubberbands At The Stars (featuring megahit “What I Am”), Albrecht says its players are less concerned about hit-making these days and more concerned about making music on their own terms. Here’s more from Albrecht…

Go forth and read.

Hunter Hauk’s Liner Notes speak of my itinerary the next couple of weeks in case you are lookin’ fer me. Click here fool.

QuickDFW Pop Life…or rather Skin gets jiggy-wit’ it (I’m still in the 90′s) this week with his weekly column – Check it out – he even makes mention of one of my particularly favorite local groups.

Aaron, Boyd & Darren will perform tonight at the Cavern. Honestly? I’m freakin’ exhausted. However, this show is really looking good – and I think I must go – with my recorder – and a camera.

D.O.bservations

Posted by Cindy on 23rd June 2006

Wow. What an issue, this week’s Dallas Observer has turned out to be.

Yeah, I got a mention, which was quite worth it being mentioned in the same breath with some fellow bloggers whom I highly respect. Sam worked hard on this feature story, and Cindy-talk aside, he did a damn fine job.

Next up, the big big shows at Club Dada this weekend, kicking off tonight…Sander Wolf writes:

It was almost 20 years ago when a young Edie Brickell and New Bohemians got its first bewildering taste of success. “What I Am,” the lead single from Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, resonated almost immediately with an audience bored with repetitive synthesizers and formulaic radio. That track, fueled by Brickell’s hippie-chick chic and Kenny Withrow’s liquid guitar solo, represented a new sound chiseled from the free-form performances of the Grateful Dead and honed by the precise power-pop of ’80s radio. Within a year the band had toured the world and appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone. “Our first record wasn’t even supposed to do anything,” recalls Withrow. “They only shipped 20,000 copies of it, and if we sold those 20,000, everyone was going to be thrilled. They sold out in a few weeks, and the record ended up going platinum…”

Read it all.

The Band performs at 10 PM tonight (Friday, June 23) and tomorrow night (Saturday, June 24) at Club Dada. Purchase tickets. $15.00 – 21+

I normally don’t have the energy to venture out to smoky bars on a Monday night, but next week might have to be an exception. Those scrappy Seattle boys are a’headin’ our way and I need me a fix. Noah Bailey writes:

…Hearing the band’s Sub Pop debut, Everything All the Time, it’s amazing to consider that Bridwell has only written songs for a few years. Woebegone anthems like “The Funeral” and “The Great Salt Lake” rival the best of fellow Northwesterners Built to Spill and Modest Mouse, while soft-spoken indie hymns like “St. Augustine” bring to mind the heartbreaking folk of labelmate Iron and Wine. (Not surprising, given the fact that Bridwell and Iron and Wine’s Sam Beam hail from the same South Carolina town. In fact, it was Bridwell who first passed Beam’s demos around Seattle, leading to his record contract with Sub Pop.) But hearing Bridwell describe his own songwriting process, it doesn’t sound nearly as mystical…

Read please.

Catch Band of Horses live this Monday, June 26th at Hailey’s in Denton. Sharing the stage are a couple of other worthy Monday-night-venture-out bands: Mt. Egypt and The Can’t See.
Doors at 9 PM
Advanced Tickets $8.00 – Door $10.00
All Ages – Under 21 $12.00

Darryl Smyers digs the freshly dropped The Hits Vol. 1 (Crow Records) – of course – cuz who can resist those Boys Named Sue…

Country music has always found room for both the shitkicker and the guy who falls in shit. Even Buck Owens and Roy Clark suffered through the cornpone of Hee Haw and actually made a haul poking fun at rural folk. Walking that line between humor and oafishness hasn’t proved easy, but the four local roustabouts known as Boys Named Sue join the ranks of Mojo Nixon as authentically amusing purveyors of rustic music…

Yeah baby!

Ms. Carlin is one smart cookie when it comes to booking splendid shows. Sam Machkovech is one smart cookie for recognizing some of them there good shows. You gotta go here to read it all.

There’s tons more creamy goodness here. Now I gotta get to the good stuff…

First check out Is This On. Sam touches on some other excellent local bloggers (local in residence, not so local in content), whom I also respect and count among my friends…

…Besides, adding more sites to your browsing history only takes a few keystrokes, so take a wider look at the scene through the glowing, monitor eyes of these pages:..

Must read.

Finally…my favorite page of all this week – Odds & Ends is quite possibly the most entertaining thing I’ve read in awhile…

Best cow in town: “That is fucking outrageous,” Salim Nourallah told us over the phone on Monday. “I hate those fuckers.”

The 2006 Dallas Observer Music Award winner seldom gets so angry, so what’s irritated this soft-spoken father? Why, the Curtain Club/Liquid Lounge/Club Clearview complex.

A few weeks ago, we talked about the improving state of affairs in Deep Ellum as of late (Is This On?, June 1). The opinion came with a big asterisk, calling the CLC complex out for a steady decline in its booking since the three clubs merged in early 2003. Really, we didn’t emphasize it enough. The problem isn’t just that we don’t like the bands playing at those three clubs. Rather, with less competition between the venues, booking has softened into a no-name wasteland of generic bands that we’d expect at Firewater Bar & Grill, and the former glory of those clubs–when hard rockers like Slow Roosevelt would actually play anywhere near quirky bands like Chomsky–has vanished. Crowd sharing doesn’t happen anymore, which was what made Deep Ellum interesting in the old days…

Please-o-please read it.

Doug left a voice mail too – I made it my ringtone.

A Chemistry Set with the Sons of Kinky, PPT and The Theater Fire

Posted by Cindy on 22nd June 2006

I think shows like the one at Sons tomorrow night are along the lines of what Sam was suggesting a couple weeks back.

Tomorrow night, Friday, June 23rd at the Sons of Hermann Hall, there will be a shindig that’ll keep you entertained on every level throughout the entire night.

How’s about a little gubernatorial fundraiser for Kinky Friedman, featuring an odd little match-up on stage with The Theater Fire’s banjo-accordian-horn laden brand of moody Americana folk, and those mad rappers with a hip-hop edge, PPT and the dreamy, poppy, quirky gorgeous sounds of The Chemistry Set all on the same bill! There are rumors floatin’ about that a “special guest” may be in da’ hizzy as well. I can’t tell ya fer sure if the Kinkster hisownself plans to make an appearance, but I can offer-up his appearance at the recent Fry Street Fair. I was there. I had a recorder. I turned it on.

Click the AudioBlog thingy below to listen…

I spent the night on the stoop of Good Records a couple of months back to be first in line for The Theater Fire’s CD Release in-store for the brilliantly marvelous Everybody has a Dark Side – and I had my recorder…and I turned it on again.

Click the AudioBlog thingy below to listen…

Thankfully, Lance Yocum always let’s me set up my mics, mixers and laptop at his shows to record some of the best dang live music around. Thankfully, Glen Squibb (sound-dude extraordinaire and helluva talented musician) allows me to plug into his sound board. Thankfully I was at Hailey’s in Denton a few months back to record this tremendous live performance by The Chemistry Set.

Click the AudioBlog thingy below to listen…

The highlight of this year’s Dallas Observer Music Awards show was most def the Sam Machkovech Hip-Hop all-stars performance, in which the 3 gentlemen who make up PPT were a part of – PikahssoPicnicTahiti

Check out one of their latest videos, “Frustrated”

Get this video and more at MySpace.com

If you need anymore than all this greatness to getcher ass planted in front of the stage at Sons Friday night – do it to hang with The Stash, who is claiming a crossing of the county line. Nuff said…

Sadly, I was unable to stay for the TM show, but I’ll catch ‘em next time. The band performs again this Saturday, June 24th at Club Clearview. Plus, Sarah promised to meet up with me soon to get an audio/video performance. She rocks…
